Genoa struck quickly in the first quarter of the Genoa-St. Paul game, at St. Paul, with Bruce Hasch setting up the first score by intercepting a pass on his own 40 yard line. Donn Major and Bill Lowe also tumed in good performances, Lowe by a touch- down. The second quarter looked good for St. Paul, while the third and fourth quarter looked good for Genoa, with Shanahan getting a thirty yard dash in the third quarter and Bruce Hasch getting a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The final score, which was 25 to 13, saw Genoa on top, which made the squads future look good. The squad saw action at their own city park against Polk. Every member of the team made good accounts of themselves. The most outstanding was Jerry Hoeft, whose ball carrying and tackling was exceptional. Those who made touchdowns in this game were Gale Christensen, Bill Shanahan, Bill Lowe, and Don Major. The final score was ..20.. Football Lettermen A 1 r Q t S t 1 s t ttt, 5 2 F.. The Fullerton Warriors defeated the Genoa Orioles 19 to O, at Genoa, in our third game of the season. Had it not been for a leaky pass defense Genoa would have given Fullerton a good game. Genoa's defense was led by Gene Whitlow, Richard Dannelly, Jerry Hoeft, Bill Shanahan, and Bryan Smith. Ronnie Ericson tumed in his season's best game at offensive center, while Bruce Hasch performed well at end. The Ofioles came out on top in its fourth game of the season by a score of 33 to O over Newman Grove. Bill Shanahan got into the picture by scoring a. touchdown. Lowe and R. Dannelly, playing fullback, also each scored a touchdown, along with the work of Leon Noble and Ralph Anderson. The caging of the Newman Grove Bluebirds must have made the team feel ready, for they came right back at Silver Creek and pounded a 47 to 7victory. Don Major ran seventy yards for a touchdown and Bill Shanahan dashed eighty yards for a touchdown. Maurer, Hasch, and Lowe each scored touchdowns. Genoa moved closer to the Goldenrod Championship by shellacking Osceola 18 to 0. Don Major scored early in the first quarter after receiving a lateral pass from Shan- ahan, while Bill himself scored two touchdowns. 'Gene'Whitlow and Ronnie Ericson tumed in good defensive performances. The Orioles won their seventh game at the city park. Genoa skinned the St. Ed. Beavers by a score of 27 to 7. All the boys made a good show of themselves, es- pecially, Bryan Smith-left end, and Bruce Hasch-quarterback. It happened! Stromsburg was the happy recipient of the breaks and beat a listless Genoa team 13- 12. These are the times that try men's souls! Genoa came right back at Clarks and won a share of the Goldenrod Conference Crown by a score of 19 to 7. The spectators saw the Orioles defeat Clarks in one of the best played games in three seasons. The Bombers, completely out-played in all departments, -saw Bruce Hasch, quarterback, and Don Major, fullback, tum in efficient offensive work while Bill Shanahan and Gene Whitlow turned in outstanding defensive work. Jerry Hoeft, who played only the first of the year, was selected as honorary game captain, while Bill Lowe and Don Major were selected as co-captains. The Orioles won seven games and lost two under Coach Marvin Brown, and Assistant Coach Harold Sohrweid. Dave Elm and Leroy Morris did a fine job of keeping the uniforms clean. This season will stand as one of the best in Oriole history. 'The students and the faculty will long remember with a warm feeling the Goldenrod Co-Champions of 1954! The varsity had an 11-5 won and lost record, with the reserve team turning in a good 8-4 won and lost record. The season began with a three point loss to Albion on the home court. The reser- ves showed promise in winning their game 40-38. St. Edward became the first victim by six points. The next game, a big one, was dropped to Fullerton in a suspenseful last quarter 65-70. The Orioles rolled over Silver Creek with a 91- 44 blasting. This concluded the 54 part of the season with a2- 2balance for the varsity. After Christ- mas the M-B-N tnumament saw Genoa finish in second place. After a bye in the first round the Orioles dumped a previously victorious Albion quintet 55-53. In the championship game they fell by five points to a hustlirg Fullerton aggregation. They then traveled to Osceola and returned with a solid Goldenrod Conference win by a 79-59 margin. Lady Luck played against the Orioles in a 60 -61 overtime decision to St. Paul. This freak ball game cost the Orioles a clear- cut Goldenrod Championshipg a bitter reminder of the Stromsburg football fiasco. Revenge came sweet in a 46-43 victory over Stromsburg. The rest of the season proved to be a list of unworthy foes as the Orioles swept by Clarks, St. Edward, Polk, Cedar Rapids, and Newman Grove. -23- Success came to the reserves six times after the holidays. The season was over, but the air never had a chance to clear before tournament time. Genoa edged Central City 51-44 in the first game, only to fall before a seemingly unbeatable Loup City five, 75- 50. The lettermen this year were Hasch, Whitlow, Shanahan, Smith, Doe, Major, Dan- nelly, and Ericson. Coach Brown and his assistant coach Harold Sohrweid, along with students and fans, can be proud of the 1954-1955 Orioles' basketball teams, the Goldenrod Co- Champions of 1955. Not only do we have a physical education program for the boys but also an intra- mural physical education program for the girls. Thirty-four girls participated in a well- balanced activity schedule this year. Some of the stimulating activities includ- ed soft ball, basketball, volley ball, various types of relay races, and exercies. The program was sponsored by the coach, Marvin Brown, with the able assistance of Mrs. Zelma Coonley. The results of this program are two- fold. The girls learn to get along well with each other and learn the meaning of good sportsmanship. These attributes can be used most beneficially in later life. -25- Boys' Physical Education ang, 'gk X . Thirty- four girls belonged to the organization. They start- ed off the year with a dance for the F.F.A. boys, which everyone enjoyed. A Christ- mas dinner for their mothers was a festive occasion which gave everyone a feeling of the Christmas spirit. 'They helped with the March of Dimes campaign in school during January. In April the girls all got up early and prepared an Easter breakfast served at 6:30 A.M. The girls showed their talent in sewing by giving a style show for the public in the spring. At the close of the school year a tea was given for the eighth grade girls to give them an idea of what F.H.A. is. All the girls felt that they had gained something by joining FHA. The FHA motto is Toward New Horizons . It expresses the purpose of our or- ganization, which is to live better today in order that our lives and those of our fam- ilies may be better tomorrow.
