Sports 11 D” helps A tough defense that led the league in shutouts and pass interceptions was the trademark of the 1977 Geneva High Varsity Football team. Penalties and mistakes continually hindered the Panther offense. Generally, Captains Jeff Quartaro, Steve Passalacqua, and )ack Augustine provided the leadership that insured a fine season. Ron Ferraro, with 396 yards, was the leading rusher, and Mike Palmieri was the leading passer with five TD's and 576 Yards. Jeff Quartaro was the leading receiver, with nine catches for 272 yards. Quartaro also blocked six punts from his defensive end position, tops in the league. Dan Parmelee led the team on defense with seventy tackles, followed closely by Tom Ward, Mark Yannotti. and Matt |ackson. Mike Cooley, ]oe DiDuro. and Ron Snyder all improved tremendously as the season progressed. “Beefy For the fall of 1978 the Panthers return seven starters on defense and seven starters on offense. For a young varsity team (Senior Chris Greene being the only returning starter), the Girls Varsity squad finished the year well, posting a league record of 9 and 5. good enough to take second place in the league. According to Coach Khoury, an excellent defense added to the team s record, the only disappointment of which was three losses in the sectionals. In the first season for JV Girls Volleyball, the schedule was informal since many schools do not yet have junior varsity teams. Two early losses, one to Victor and the other to Penn Yan. were turned around to wins later in the year, an overall winning one. As indicated in the size of the team, tremendous interest was shown in a Boys Volleyball program. Hard work and early morning practices posed no problem as the team prepared itself to compete with the league leaders. Further, as of presstime, two sophomores were leading the scoring, a fact which should give Davids a nucleus around which to build future teams. Teresa DiCampli was the team's playmaker on offense, and along with Chris Greene, one of the most consistent defensive players. Bridget Borsa, Tina Yannotti, Lynn Luzzi. and Pam O'Neill all were playing good games coming off the bench. When this book went to press, sophomore Mary Murphy was leading the team in three categories: ■ HO u rr rebounds- with 14 per game: scoring- averaging 21 points per game: and steals-averaging over tw'o per contest. Liz Ca|)ozzi. another sophomore, was second in scoring and the fourth leading reboundcr. Other leading scorers were Terri Bagshaw. Rhonda Richmond. Saga staff works year round Work on this edition of the Seneca Saga began in May of 1977 when the first full staff meeting was held to map out the general direction of the 1978 book. In July, senior staff members met for a work session at Mr. and Mrs. Loveland s home. Decisions on how monies would be spent were made, four-color being sacrificed to keep the book’s sections intact. The supplement will be larger than previous editions. As usual, money presented a real problem. Then, in September, senior design editor Rose McAfoose transferred from the district, leaving Bob Olsowsky and junior Sue Philips to manage that aspect of the book. However, the photography- professionally from Sjoblom- and candid coverage- from seniors Charles Leo. Corrine Stoewsand and juniors Leo Fenner. Intramurals also began this fall with football, followed by chess, basketball and plans for volleyball. A football intramural game is pictured upper center pages 54 and 55. The spirit of Christmas was promoted by the “Twelve Days of Christmas and the can good drive. (This year representatives from each class vied with each other in collecting cans from their classmates.) Junior Mary Beth George, whose class collected the most cans, had the honor of putting pies in the faces of Chris Carroll and Anne Sheilds at the Christmas Assembly. Much Christmas spirit was engendered by Santa and his elves, shown below, the day of the assembly. A new and important responsibility assumed by the Student Council was the election of a Student Representative to the Board of Education. This position is held by senior Cheryl Collins. With various donations to different groups such as the Marching Band, the foreign exchange program, and to the student attending the mock U.N. at the Hague. Student Council has shown it is the government of the students. Along with the annual Talent Night and regularly scheduled dances. February 13-17. was just what the doctor had ordered to help the winter blahs. All classes participated in decorating the halls, the sophomores taking the fist floor: the juniors, the second: and the seniors, the third. The sophomores, showing great enthusiasm and covering every square inch of their hall, clinched the competition with over seventy points. But the hall competition was not the only activity during Spirit Week. Tuesday we found our classes being invaded by candy-bearing Cupids of all sizes and descriptions. Wednesday students from Marcus Whitman visited our school and on Thursday we sent students over there. Thursday was also red and black day.  As an ex|)ert follow-up to Spirit Week. Student Council pro| osed Winter Weekend, which started off Friday night with the sophomore dance featuring Freeway. Saturday night was the night of the Alpha dinner dance, the theme of which was Love Is. Sunday was filled with tobogganing on the Seneca Lake Country Club hill, followed by a party in the Geneva High gym. Activities 57 Goal: to improve communication One of the major contributions the Geneva School Board has made this year is in the area of improving communication with the city and the student body. The Educational Advisory Committee, made up of twenty two people, reflects a cross section of the community's thinking and has proven to be a big help to the board this year. Not only has the board opened an avenue of communication to the public, but also for the first time, one to the students. Cheryl Collins, who will have attended ten board meetings by the end of this school year, was picked by the Student Council to represent her fellow students at regular meetings. With these two avenues of input, the board can continue to improve the quality of our education as it has done. Board 60 Top: Superintendent Kirsch. Board President Cage. Mr. D'Amico. Principal Expand course offerings Always intent on improving the educational atmosphere at the Geneva High, the school administrators have, in the school year 1977-1978, broadened the curriculum at both ends of the spectrum. To challenge the better students, they have introduced two new advanced placement programs, one in Biology and one in English. They have also included three new courses in the areas of Math, Social Studies, and Science for those who aren't achieving up to their full potential. Mr. Scalise, principal, graduated with the GHS class of 48 as Student Council president. After graduating from Duke, he taught science in Geneva, and was a junior high school principal before he assumed his current position as the Geneva High principal in 72 . Miss Maney, having graduated from the Geneva High as vice-president of her senior class, went on to earn her doctorate degree from Syracuse University. She then returned to Geneva and chaired the GHS Social Studies Department before being named vice-principal. She is also very active in the community. Helen P. Maney. Asst. Seniors 104 Class of ’78 wins academic honors Election to the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors available to members of each graduating class of Geneva High School. Three elections are held, the first in the spring of the junior year, the second and third in the fall and spring of he senior year. Once academic eligibility has been certified, a committee consisting of administration, guidance, and faculty personnel meets to consider the qualifications of the candidates in the areas of leadership, character, and sendee. Scenes from the fall induction for the Class of 78 are reproduced on this page to the left. In addition, eight members of the class excelled in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Exam last year. Susan Manning achieved finalist standing by placing in the top one percent of all students on the national level. Receiving letters of Commendation were Keith Aten. Amy Hoose, Steve Major. John McGloon, Bob Olsowskv, Mark C. Wilson, and Russell Kincaid. Those winners are pictured above. 105 BOCES provides work experience When a GHS student begins his junior year, he can elect, if his attendance and motivation qualify him. to spend a half of each school day in Flint at the occupational school. There, half of his time is spent in the classroom, the other half in actual job situations in the vocational program in which he is enrolled. The program continues through the student's senior year. Two class periods are assigned for the program. A full year of service provides one unit of credit for the student. Many other seniors work part-time at local businesses but are not enrolled in the program. Upper left- Craig Windsor. Middle- Marty Peck at Harvey Associates. Above- Carol Fitzsimmons. Geneva High School sizzles with action Many events took place between February and June at G.H.S. A great loss to our school was the retirement of Miss Helen P. Maney, our vice-principal. She hopes to remain in touch with both students and faculty, and as she will miss her school association, she will continue to be interested in both G.H.S. and the educational system in general. Taking the place of Miss Maney, is Mr. Maher, a Geneva native and 1952 graduate of DeSales High School who Sue Mattick and Cheryl Collins serve Miss Maney at a student council reception in her honor. has quite a history of coaching and teaching. After attending Brockport State College, where he majored in Health and Physical Education, he held a job as an elementary school gym teacher in North Tonawanda. He then returned to DeSales to coach football, basketball, and baseball, and also to teach for nine years. After a short term job at Sachen High School on Long Island, he took a position as a phys ed teacher and head football and basketball coach at Gates-Chili High School. There he spent five years coaching and five in administration. This year Foreign Language Week was celebrated from March 13 through March 18. Students of Esperanto, French, Italian, Latin, and Spanish took part in a number of activities. Announcements were taped for WGVA and played throughout the week, and a group discussion was aired at the end of the week. Every morning, students made announcements in foreign languages here at school. However, the major event of the week was a poster contest judged by the art department. Students made posters encouraging others to learn a foreign language, and the winner was Pam Mitchell, a French student. The week's events climaxed Thursday with a dinner of foreign dishes brought by the students. As usual, everyone worked hard to make Foreign Language Week a successful one. Later in the year, on April 12, the students of French III and IV attended “Huis Clos , presented at Nazareth College Art Center in Rochester. Also during the spring several GHS musicians won special honors. Mike DiDuro was selected by the other Band members to play with the Navy Band which performed at the Geneva Theater on April 30. During the week of April 11-16 another accomplished musician, Bruce Keplinger, traveled to Chicago to participate in the National Honors Band, composed of 100 musicians from all over the U.S. Other band students participated in a solo festival at Waterloo on March 18, and received the following marks: Bruce Keplinger, Grade VI-A + ; Ron Krauss, Grade VI-A+ joe Campbell. Grade Vi-A; John Springer. Grade V- A; Heidi Krauss. Grade VI-B + ; Steve Trumbull, Grade VI-B; Duet- Laurie Herrick and Nancy Connolly, Grade VI- B+. The level of difficulty ranges from Grade I, the easiest, to Grade VI, the hardest. At the Seneca Falls Pageant of Bands held on May 19-20, Geneva High unveiled their brand new uniforms and walked away with four trophies. The stage band finished in second place while fourth place awards were presented to the concert band, marching band, and color guard. The same groups performed for the first time ever at the Gorham Pageant on |une 2 and 3. This spring brought the second British invasion to Geneva High School. There were six students from Nottingham, England: Angela Cheetham, June Dixon, Tracey Drapkin, janet Innes, Raymond Vardy, David Walton, and their advisor, Mr. Peter Dowsett. Our English guests were also invited to a city council meeting, the French Club dinner, a pot-luck supper and a family day at Niagara Falls. Any free time was spent bowling, rollerskating, attending lacrosse games and student council dances. Miss Strawway, Mrs. Karol, and Mr. Dowsett gave a great deal of time and dedication to the organizing and planning of the exchange program. Other people who gave their time were the host families. They were the Curries, the Lahrs, the Benkovitches, the Beaudrys, the Ferrinis, and the Troches-sets. This was truly a fair exchange, for in June a group of American students flew into London for an American invasion! On the sports scene, GHS athletes finished winter sports in fine form. Mark Wilson, a senior guard in basketball, averaged 20.6 points per game and was named to the All Greater Rochester team. Tracey and |anel observe the three flags at Fort Niagara while their Geneva High hosts wait for the next explosion! The Girls Varsity Basketball team also ended a fine season advancing to the quarter finals of sectionals. The 1978 win-loss record was 10-6 as Geneva tied for third place with Newark. The captains for the season were Chris Greene, Bridget Borsa, and Rhonda Richmond. The Most Valuable Player Award was presented to Mary Murphy, while Chris Greene and Liz Capozzi received awards for the Most Improved players. Murphy was selected to be on the All League-First Team. Terry Bagshaw, Greene, and Capozzi all received special mention within the league. The Boys Swim team had an outstanding 10-2 season, finishing third in the Section 5 Class B swim meet. Geneva's Varsity Lacrosse Team, captained by |im Pedulla and Steve Passalacoua and coached by Mr. McDonald and Mr. Natti, had a very-successful year. After losing the first three games, the Panthers came on to a strong Finger Lakes finish beating Canandaigua 5-4 in the last game of the regular season. This gave them a 7-1 league record and a tie for the Finger Lakes championship. Five Geneva players were named first team all league: Tom Ward, lim Pedulla, Ron Ferraro. Steve Passaiacciua, and Guy VanArsdale. Also tapped for all league honors were Chuck Leo and Joe DiDuro. second team: Steve DePillo, Mike DiDuro and Bob Beaudrv, honorable mention. Guy VanArsdale was named High School All American for his outstanding work in the goal. The year was very exciting. Close losses to traditional powerhouses Irondequoit and Webster Thomas and the fine 11-7 overall record made the season very rewarding. The season ended when Geneva gave the defending Section V champions. Corning East, a great game in Sectional semi-finals but lost 9-4. The team was characterized by hustle and desire. This team has left an attitude and reputation that squads must strive for in the future. They then went on to beat every' team except North Rose Wolcott. In spite of losing to North Rose both times, the team had many good times together. For example, there was the time Elaine Corwin got stuck in the bleachers and the team was going to take turns feeding her with a straw; there were the fights in the 400 free relay about who would go first, until Lynn Schaefers' false start decided it; there were the false starts (obviously) to help people rest; there were Mr. Scalise’s nightly visits: the time Liz Gindling did 50 200 IM's, a total of 10,000 yards, for $30; the new cross back suits that lasted one day and cut off all circulation to your legs; and the five girls who went to sectionals in a station wagon bus. This year's varsity team finished with a 4-13 record. However, despite this record, the team possessed some outstanding senior players such as |im Kerr, Eric Lahr, John Lathey, Nick Amatulli, and Gino Yannotti. These seniors displayed the winning qualities of hustle, desire and teamwork. Next year's Panthers will be counting on returnees Ron Snyder, Chip D'Amico. Tom Burrall, Roger Smith, Joe Campbell, and John Nevill to lead them. In the “minor leagues the J.V. baseball team started the season with only three returning sophomores. Freshmen supplied the bulk of the manpower, but two eighth graders provided pitching and catching services for the team. While having a successful season in terms of wins and losses, the Little Panthers also demonstrated great spirit and fine sportsmanship throughout the year, while chalking up 11 wins and 6 losses. Swinging spring teams The 1978 Boys Varsity Tennis Team finished in third place with a 25-25 record, winning four matches and losing six. GHS played only Canandaigua for the title since there were only two Class A teams in the Finger Lakes division. Certain individuals were outstanding during the season. In third singles Dan Coriale, the MVP winner, had an undefeated season. Alan Carle and Ken Bell, playing first doubles, won their match against Victor. Rick Lopez and Bell had an outstanding 6-3 season in second doubles. C3n the links, the golf team swung to its third straight league championship with a record of 32-0-2. Credit for this outstanding record should be given to seniors Mike Stoyla and Chris Carroll. Rebuilders for next year's team include John Campbell, Theresa DiCampli, and Frank Ottley. Geneva sent three men to represent the Finger Lakes team at sectionals, with Stoyla becoming a member of the nine man team from Section V which qualified for the state championship.
