A few include participating in the homecoming parade, staffing the school store, and getting into the holiday spirit via concerts, parties, and assemblies. This year the Student Council initiated many new programs, and kept the spirit of their older programs with their hard work and enthusiasm. The Student Council added football to their intramural program, joining the already established volleyball. Many students participated in a Council sponsored ping-pong tournament, the first of its kind. October's Homecoming was spiced by another innovation: the election of a Homecoming King and Homecoming Princes. At Christmastime, the Council worked for Operation Merry Christmas by having a canned goods collection contest between Mr. Ninestine and their advisor. Mr. Wheeler. The project turned out well; especially for the needy people who benefited from Operation Merry Christmas, and for the victorious Mr. Ninestine, who delighted in plastering Mr. Wheeler’s face with a pie. Circolo Dante was formed by Mr. Guerra and his Italian class, and the Esperanto Club was formed by Mr. Peters’ class, who are studying the international language. These clubs join the established Spanish Club, and the French Club, (which had the highest number of members). All four of these clubs provide students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of their respective languages with extra-scholastic activities. Membership in both clubs increased this year. Girls Varsity Club members are responsible for cleaning up the stadium after football games, while the men man the fences. During the year, both clubs are involved in numerous fund-raising drives to pay for the June Block G Banquet. To be a member of either club, athletes must be a letter-winner in a varsity sport and pass nomination by other club members. This year Mrs. Whiting and Mr. Brooks served as advisors for the groups. Activities 17 Strive for greater physical well-being One of the most popular after school activities is lifting weights. Keeping this in mind. Mr. Canale offers the weightlifting Club- the first of its kind at GHS- which offers students an opportunity to “pump iron” here at GHS with the Gladiator Weight Machine downstairs. Two meetings were held during the summer: a senior staff gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Loveland’s home in July, and a general business one in August at the school. Local businesses contributed more generously than in the past, which meant that there was no increase in the price over 1976. A supplement to this book will be issued in September 1977. Yearbook and newspaper report past and present One of the pleasant surprises of the school year was the rebirth of the school newspaper. The newspaper featured not only news and sports articles, but editorials, games, and prizes as well. To be a member of the staff, one must take Journalism as a Senior elective. The Panther’s Pride is published every month, and costs only a dime. The advisor is Mr. Fouracre. Activities 21 HEj Members of the Stage Band: ROW 1: John Nicholas. Steve Knuuti. Added to the traditional Christmas and spring concerts was a well attended evenings Pops Concert performed in October. Also over Thanksgiving vacation. Santa was welcomed to Pyramid Mall to the strains of the GHS band. Then, in February, the GHS Music Department hosted the Ontaiio County Chorus and Band. Appearing in those aggregations were vocalists Michelle George. Anna Boehman, Jim Ditmars. and Bruce Keplinger. and instrumentalists Greg King and Jamie Daykin. Activities 23 Marching band completes sixth season Geneva High’s Marching Band had an excellent sixth season with fifty-six musicians, sixteen color guard, and four majorettes in the group. Mr Fabrizio. the new director of the band, instituted 7 a.m. rehearsals this year. Along with halftime performances at home games, the group also participated in the October Firemen’s Parade. Their annual awards banquet was held on November 24. Activities 24 Members of the 1976-1977 Marching Band: Linda Allen. Debbie Bidwell. Jean Buckley. Sue Burgess. Justin Busch. Mary Ellen Casey. One of the most glamorous and anticipated nights in the school year is Homecoming, which was initiated three years ago by the Student Council. The three classes, the staff, and the language clubs construct elegant floats-this year on the theme of sports and spirit- and display them during the downtown parade and at the football game. This year’s Student Council added a new dimension to Homecoming by approving election of male royalty to accompany the young women elected princesses and queen by the classes. After the football game, the annual Homecoming Reception was held on Friday evening. October 15. at North Street School. Featured at the reception was a beautiful cake baked and decorated by Mrs. Samuel Mastrogiovanni. Activities 26 TfATlVf uu ABOVE: Mrs Palmieri. Mrs. Johnson. Whether competing in interscholastic play, or intramurals, many students have participated in athletic events during their high school years. In the following pages, we salute all of our teams, and the many fine individual performances that were displayed throughout the ’76-77 campaign, as the Panthers were on the move.” J • r lM iW r aN - UJ VC. Among the highlights of the seasons were the girls’ defeating of Canandaigua, which marked the first time CA has been beaten at home, and placing six members on the Finger Lakes All-Star Team. These All Stars included Katie Springer, the best singles player in the league; singles player Bridget Borsa; the doubles team of Diane Haag and Chris Greene, which went undefeated; and the doubles team of Debbie Frey and Allison Saglimbeni. Freshman Michelle Antinelli played brilliant singles as these girls contributed to another fine year for Girls Tennis. Soccer: improved season One of the more popular girls’ sports is soccer. Many GHS girls try out and make the team, and their efforts are rewarded with a varsity letter at the end of the season. Each year the girls have been making marked improvements in their game. For the 1976-77 campaign, they won their first league game ever. They also met crosstown rival DeSales High for the first time and soundly defeated them. The girls were led by senior June Bounds, who closed out her GHS soccer career by leading the team once again in goals and points scored. Turning in fine games as well were Nancy Grant. Injuries hit many key players, and were so bad that the Panthers could only field 20 players during some of their games. Despite their aches and pains, many Panthers had fine seasons. Marty Olmstead led the team in scoring, and handled the kicking chores. The defense was anchored by Seniors Mario Panetta. Kelly Drennen. and Woody Nepa, while Olmstead. Tommy Ferraro and Bob Bero starred on offense. This season. Mr. Canale's debuting one as Varsity coach, also initiated a rebuilding program in GHS football. Underclassmen like Tom Ward. Football cheerleading is especially hard because of the weather-usually very cold. wet. and muddy. But. the 1976 GHS football cheerleaders exhibited great enthusiasm despite these conditions, and their beauty “shone” on the field, even when the sun did not. Sports 41 Train for future challenges The importance of running as an excellent way to maintain condition for other sports is reflected in the interest in cross country and indoor track. In fact, one of the pleasant surprises of the fall sports picture was the improvement of the Cross Country team as they fiddled around the .500 mark all year. The team ran very well, being right in the middle of every meet. This is due to many outstanding performances, especially by sophomore John Rodgers. Rodgers established himself as the league's best runner by taking first place in every meet he ran except one. Fine running was also displayed by Eric Trumbull, Jamie Burt, and Todd Taylor, as Coach Brooks and the rest of the team looks forward to the fall of 1977. Cross Country: ROW 1- Chico Alonso. Some of the year’s highlights were near upsets of Canandaigua and Newark, and handing DeSales High their only loss of the season. The team was led by Mark Wilson, Gene Sapp. Timmy Nothrup, Andy Collier, and Joe Sweeney. Sophomore James Thomas also started numerous games after being moved up from JV’s at mid-season. Marvin Sapp. Chris Carroll, John McFadden, and Mark Pitifer chipped in as well. With Gene Sapp and Sweeney being the only seniors on the team, valuable experience was gained for next year’s campaign. JV hoopsters thump twice In its second year under Coach Wenzel, the JV Basketball Team capped its season with two victories over DeSales High. The reason for their success was the outstanding teamwork that was displayed. The starting five were Rufus Johnson. Mike Coutlee. Roger Smith, Tom Myers, and Abram Johnson. ROW 1 Mgr Jeff Spruill. Mary Lou Matthews and Freshman sensation Mary Murphy The GHS Girls Varsity Volleyball team had a very successful season. In league competition they tied for first place with a 13-3 record. This accomplishment was due to their defensive play as well as to their display of team unity and tenacity. They also participated in the Section V Tournament, going all the way to the semi-finals. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Vogt, who had died just four days before in an automobile accident. Despite competing against Penn Yan. the hottest team in the league, the Panthers won all four games as Marc Woznick bowled a 598 series, and Senior Captain Fran Luzzi hit a 586. JV’s record disappointing The coaching staffs dedication and long hours of work were not enough to offset the JV wrestlers lack of experience which resulted in a disappointing 1976-77 season. In many matches Geneva freshmen and sophomores were pitted against juniors Also, the wrestlers had little backing from fans; at home matches, the opponents’ supporters too frequently outnumbered Geneva fans. On the opening day. Superintendent Paul Kirsch emphasized that the district’s current crisis had resulted from a coming together of circumstantial events- mainly general downward trend in enrollment (except for Geneva High School), the continued erosion of public education in the taxpayer’s esteem, and a decline in the number of tax dollars and their value Pledging his personal effort to eliminate red tape, Superintendent Kirsch appealed to all to help Geneva’s educational system by approaching the educational task together and by focusing attention on the needs of the students. CLOCKWISE FROM UPPER LEFT: Superintendent Paul Kirsch; Harrison Jahn. President of the Board of Education; Raymond D Gage. Principal Principals lead school Facing its largest enrollment in its fifty year history. Geneva High started the year in fine fashion, mainly because of two GHS graduates. Vincent J. Scalise and Helen P. Maney. Mr. Scalise graduated in the GHS class of 48 as Student Council president. A graduate of Duke University, he taught science in Geneva and was junior high principal before assuming his current position- GHS principal-in 1972. Having graduated from GHS as vice-president of her senior class. Miss Maney earned her doctorate degree from Syracuse University, and chaired the GHS Social Studies Helen P Maney. Vice Principal Department before being named vice-principal. An active community member, she numbers among her activities serving as Geneva’s mayor and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Hobart. One of the innovations Mr. Scalise and Miss Maney introduced this year was a new report card which features comment columns. Marking periods have also been extended to four nine weeks periods. This gives the student four extra weeks to start the school year on the right foot. It also introduces them to a grading period many will face in their higher education. Working together with faculty, parents, and students. Mr. Scalise and Miss Maney opened the year with the goal of maintaining the high standards Geneva High has always known. Twelve students from Geneva High will be returning the visit to Rushcliffe School in Nottingham. England this summer. Advising was a joint effort of Geneva’s Mr. and Mrs. Karol, and Rushcliffe’s Mr. and Mrs. James. A fine team composed of fine girls, the Pink Panthers, complete with their stuffed pink panther, have made a lasting impression on the whole Finger Lakes area. In the Wayne-Finger Lakes relays. Geneva was victorious in all eleven events, chalking up its third undefeated season. At the close of the season, in league championships, the girls finished first in all ten events, and won overall in sectionals, including a double win by Pat Kenny. But the season was one of fun. not only work, for these girls. Besides the records broken and reset, and the aching muscles after practice, there was time left for laughter. Like Bev's untimely dive into the pool to congratulate Rhonda on her swim in the 500 freestyle, resulting in Bev’s own disqualification; Nancy’s moo-cows”, and the rousing choruses of the famous Rooster Song.” All in all. the girls deserve a great deal of credit for their success and a wish for good luck in coming years.
