1976 . . . Some things about life in OHS in 1925-26 seem odd from our standpoint fifty years later. For instance, although classes were not segregated by sex in '26. there WERE separate stairways, doors, and lunchrooms for boys and girls. Geneva High had only one organized sport in 1926. a boys basketball team. Today the school offers many different sports for both girls and boys. Another fifty years may see Geneva High relocated. In the fall of 1975. a team of State Education Department officials visited the Geneva district and recommended a comprehensive building program which included a new senior high building to house grades nine through twelve. Wherever Geneva High School is in 2026, it will •proudly stand' in the memories of its many alumni.

1926 . . . rrrm Mb jpD Mi i ! ysS it ■Ik « U a 11 lM.t:-v ' This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of our high school building. In 1922 at a City Council meeting, the people of Geneva proposed a new high school building, “a model of architectural beauty and convenience.” Out of the 11.000 citizens who voted on the issue, only 60 NO votes were cast. The new high school, built to accommodate 794 pupils, opened in September of 1925. Interestingly enough, the Energy Crisis was a known fact then. The news article reporting on the opening of this new school quoted the superintendent as saying. “There will be no time lost in the school system during winter through lack of coal.” A comparison of 1926 and 1976 statistics on the building and on student population shows vast differences. In 1926. there were 517 students enrolled in GHS. while the 1976 enrollment numbers over 800. There were sixty-seven seniors in the Class of 1926. of whom forty-two planned to attend college; the Class of 1976 has 235 members. Fifty years ago the building boasted twenty-five classrooms. This figure is slightly less than half the number today, thanks to two modern additions to the original structure- the Phys. Ed. and Arts wings.
