We the people Published by THE SENECA SAGA STAFF Geneva High School Geneva. New York Volume 80 In 1976 the yearbook staff decided to tie the past to the present by using the first phrase of the preamble as the theme of the book. The following is our preamble to this annual: We the people of Geneva High School, in order to form a united student body, establish tradition, insure mutual satisfaction, provide for future reminiscences, promote our school's spirit, and secure the memories of GHS to ourselves and our posterity, do Foreword conceive and publish this annual for Geneva High School. In 1782 the Constitution of the United device Cov))clccKu 'Tom Co Colo. States of America was established. The following is its preamble: We the people of the United States, in order to form a more 3oi ba - x La csec insure domestic tranquility, perfect union, establish justice. provide for the common defense. promote the general welfare, and secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do or- dain and establish this constitu- tion for the United States of America. Remember the West Street Library and the North Street kindergarten rooms where each of us began to learn? What about High Street’s all-purpose room and Prospect’s classrooms-places for fun and for growth during our middle years? Or the Junior High School, the meeting place for both sides of town where new friendships developed? And finally. Geneva High School-the last step in our education with our friends, where learning and fun brought us into the world. 4 5 1926 . . . rrrm Mb jpD Mi i ! ysS it ■Ik « U a 11 lM.t:-v ' This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of our high school building. In 1922 at a City Council meeting, the people of Geneva proposed a new high school building, “a model of architectural beauty and convenience.” Out of the 11.000 citizens who voted on the issue, only 60 NO votes were cast. The new high school, built to accommodate 794 pupils, opened in September of 1925. Interestingly enough, the Energy Crisis was a known fact then. The news article reporting on the opening of this new school quoted the superintendent as saying. “There will be no time lost in the school system during winter through lack of coal.” A comparison of 1926 and 1976 statistics on the building and on student population shows vast differences. In 1926. there were 517 students enrolled in GHS. while the 1976 enrollment numbers over 800. There were sixty-seven seniors in the Class of 1926. of whom forty-two planned to attend college; the Class of 1976 has 235 members. Fifty years ago the building boasted twenty-five classrooms. This figure is slightly less than half the number today, thanks to two modern additions to the original structure- the Phys. Ed. and Arts wings. 1976 . . . Some things about life in OHS in 1925-26 seem odd from our standpoint fifty years later. For instance, although classes were not segregated by sex in '26. there WERE separate stairways, doors, and lunchrooms for boys and girls. Geneva High had only one organized sport in 1926. a boys basketball team. Today the school offers many different sports for both girls and boys. Another fifty years may see Geneva High relocated. In the fall of 1975. a team of State Education Department officials visited the Geneva district and recommended a comprehensive building program which included a new senior high building to house grades nine through twelve. Wherever Geneva High School is in 2026, it will •proudly stand' in the memories of its many alumni. We the people our promise The class of 76 started its last year at Geneva High School with a good academic record. Of the 237 seniors in the class, seventy made the honor roll in the first marking period, with twelve attaining high honors. Many of the graduates have earned outstanding honors. Last spring, eight of the class were inducted into the National Honor Society. Ralph Aten. Jim Bentsen. Ted Buzenski, Mary Barnard. Frannie D Amico, A1 DeBoover. Dan Garrow. Peggy Johnson. Anne Johnston, Barb Larsen, Jon Murphy, Loretta Rush. Mary Smith. A1 Thomas. Chris VanBuren. and Bob Carle were named to WHO’S WHO IN AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. Earning a top honor for the class, Mary Smith was awarded a National Merit Scholarship as a result of her achievement on the PSAT’s. Scoring well on the same test were Irene Akens, A1 Thomas. Ralph Aten, and Chris VanBuren, who received Letters of Commendation. Students concerns: past and future Geneva High students show an awareness of the importance of past history and the future’s hopes in their extracurricular past-times and curricular. Many students are involved in working with the citizens of the future, elementary school children. These seniors are a part of a recent program instituted as part of the curriculum, STAP. or Student Assistant Teacher Program. From their experiences working with the younger children, they gain an understanding of the learning habits and behavior of early elementary age children. Linking the present to the past, members of the elective Government class visited Washington D.C. in November and saw many historic sites. Leading the students was Mrs. Karol. Some of the interesting spots that they visited were the Jefferson Memorial, pictured LEFT, the Washington Monument, the White House, and the Supreme Court. During the fall some students furthered future interests by attending Hobart Seminars. That group is pictured BELOW. The secret of education lies in respecting the pupil. Ralph Waldo Emerson 16 17 Dr. Paul E. Kirsch assumed the Geneva City School District's Superintendency in July of 1975. In his remarks at the district faculty meeting in September. Dr. Kirsch emphasized that his aim as superintendent is twofold: to work to develop a process that will improve the educational quality already present in Geneva schools, and to build bridges between all in the schools and in the community so that the program becomes more significant for the students. Curriculum development Dr. Kirsch sees as a process that must involve all people in the community— the learner, the teacher, the parent, the taxpayer. In this bicentennial year, as in all years, the elected members of the Board of Education, the school administrators and the faculty— all focus their efforts to the end of preparing Geneva students to enter adulthood as effective. informed citizens of our country. The ceremony began with a speech describing the qualities each candidate must possess. A student must rank among the top fifteen percent of his class and exhibit outstanding qualities in Scholarship. Leadership, Character, and Service. December NHS candidates await induction into the society. Members of the administrative and teaching staffs consider these facts, and after many hours of deliberation, decide upon who is to be inducted. After the president introduced each student, describing his individual qualifications, all inductees repreated the oath of the National Honor Society. 47 Language clubs expand cultural knowledge FRENCH CLUB: ROW 1- Lynn Schafers. Media staff's function as recorders Work on the 1976 yearbook started in June of 1975 at the first full staff meeting. At that time the staff decided to use the nation's bicentennial year celebration as a departure point for tying together the sections of the book. During the summer vacation, three staff members got a head start on learning publishing skills and techniques. Scott Wickes. Anne Johnston, and Barb Larsen all attended a three-day workshop at Rochester's St. John Fisher College to study photographic and layout principles. Meeting deadlines while staying within a financial budget and within the limits of photographer's contract is the main problem for any publication staff. The yearbook is no exception. Increased publishing costs and skyrocketing paper prices necessitated a raise in the subscription rate for the book. Incorporating six pages of four color, which were due in-plant in mid November meant that the staff had to raise nearly $300.00 more from sponsorships than the 1975 staff did. This year, because of expanded activities in the spring, the September supplement to this book, which covers events from March through June and commencement, will have twenty-four pages. EDITORS. Formed last spring under the direction of Mrs. Karol, Mrs. Broderick, and Mr. Fouracre, the goals of the Bicentennial Committee are to make Geneva High School a part of our country’s bicentennial celebration. The first project that the committee undertook was the cleanup of Washington Street Cemetery. After sponsoring a Teacher Trikeathon, from which they raised $356.00, the committee fixed the cemetery’s entrance arch. Under the leadership of Ms. Koury and Mr. Fouracre. a group of students prepared a presentation featuring tours of local homes. After researching various sources and interviewing the owners of the homes, the group prepared a videotape with narrative on the history of the houses. 51 Other projects, including a horticultural beautifying of school grounds, were planned for the spring of 1976. This year events started on a Monday morning in February with students searching for a Block G that had been hidden somewhere on the school's premises. Before homeroom period was over, senior Debby Woody had found the G”. thus earning herself a free ticket to the weekend festivities. Eclipse played for the weekend dance, and on Sunday. February 8. Seneca Lake Country Club grounds were opened to GHS for tobogan-ning and other winter fun. 56 Shown on thi page are scenes from Winter Weekend, featuring Pat Welch (UPPER LEFT) as he tries out for the surfing team. Several of the games that were lost were heartbreakers. Generally, the team played well in the third quarter, frequently being down by several buckets at the half. But too many factors combined to prevent them from following through and chalking up more wins. In sectional playoffs. Geneva lost to Canandaigua by one point. The team played exceptional ball, being behind by fifteen points at the half. In his first year of varsity play. Gene Sapp led the Panthers and the entire league with an eighteen point average. Our ideal, whatever it may be, lies further on. Ezra Hall Gillett 117 The long road to graduation has finally come to an end for each of you in the Class of ’76. Along the way you have experienced many opportunities to learn, to participate. and to develop on to mature young citizens. It is our sincere hope that your years in school have been meaningful, and that you took advantage of what your school had to offer. As you now go on to new jobs and further schooling, be positive in facing the challenges before you. My congratulations to the members of the Class of ’76-may the Spirit of '76 be always with you. Vincent J. Scalise Geneva High seniors added to the prestige of the Class of ’76 by winning an impressive number of NYS Regents Scholarships. The monetary awards were based on performance on a statewide test administered in October of 1975. WINNERS NURSING Irene Akens Ralph Aten Barbara Larsen James Bentsen Katherine E. Wellington 118 To the Class of 1976: To have the unique privilege of being a member of the bicentennial class of 1976 is more a coincidence of the time of your birth than any accomplishment on your part. The enviable record your class has set in both academics and activities is your real accomplishment. Some people see the issuance of the Declaration of Independence as an end- of colonial rule by England. In fact it was a beginning- of a seven year struggle which would end with the surrender of the British at Yorktown and the signing of the Treaty of Paris in which our independence was recognized by England and the world. Some people see the issuance of a high school diploma as an end of thirteen or more years of formal education. Some will also view it as their own Declaration of Independence. Your diploma is a beginning- of struggles no less challenging than those the colonists faced: to make a nation, to build a better world, to make democracy work, to be free. May it be the personal challenge to each of you to make some contribution to your community and country. This school is better in many ways because your very special class has been here. Carry this ‘Spirit of 76 in whatever you do. wherever you go. On behalf of all the Senior advisors and the entire faculty: “Thank you for what you’ve done and what we know you can do and will do to make the world better. With sincere affection. Donald C. In Memoriam Larry Bramlett Wouldst thou hear what man can say In a little? Reader, stay Underneath this stone doth lie As much beauty as could die; Which in life did harbor give To more virtue than doth live. If at all he had a fault. Leave it buried in this vault. One name was Larry. The other let it sleep with death; Fitter, where it died to tell. Than that it lived at all. Ben Jonson I ask you- what can we say about someone who gave everyone with whom he came in contact a feeling of joy. happiness, and love? When Larry was taken from us. we knew that we had lost a true friend. Larry dreamed of becoming a well-known boxer, but his untimely death meant that dream will never be fulfilled.
