When the world needed his wisdom so badly. Where do you start-with words to describe A man who gave so much-so gladly. Yes Doc, you have given your all, And your all meant the very best. For you’ve left your mark on ten thousand kids, Who are richer, as they will attest. Your courage has inspired us all, But few men knew its limit, And with the ever darkening days Nothing could ever dim it. Yes somewhere you’ll find a mountain With an Indian Lake near by, Where the hunting is great and the fishing-Well-you’ll never have to lie. So throw out the ball and get on the field, For in spirit you will always be here, And when we tell future teams bout Doc, We hope they won’t notice the tear. Joe Morrissette, Coach for some the Road divides, and we each take our separate ways; some continue as a Company for a time. This book purports to be an Account of the part of this Journey we have made together. May we ever be Desirers of Dragons. The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And wither then? I cannot say. J. R. R. Tolkien 5 administrators Mr. Spurgeon B. Wuertenberger Principal As we draw closer to the end of the school year it becomes more and more evident that the members of the Class of 1968 are going to emerge into a world that is in one of its most exciting and challenging periods of all history. Whether these challenges become obstacles of discouragement or opportunities for service and progress will be determined primarily by the internal fortitude and character of the individuals of your generation. I can hope for you that your experiences in high school will have led to your ability to make these decisions wisely. My best wishes go with you. UeeieU-De rA 8 In June of 1968, you of Geneva High School Senior Class will reach the time called graduation. Webster defines this event as Commencement. For thirteen years, most of you have been exposed to similar educational experiences. Now, you are to go your separate ways; some to continue education in academic or vocational areas; others will enter immediate employment or armed forces. Each of you will be commencing a new stage in your life. You, as an adult, must assume the responsibility for the socio-economic trends of your times. You will evaluate the past and present mores and have the opportunity to retain, modify or delete all or parts to fit the needs of your generation. May each of you achieve happiness and satisfaction for a job well done as you travel life’s path. Mr. G. Raymond Harrold Vice-principal Dr. William S. Bolstered by fine performances by both offense and defense squads, Geneva’s football team was in the race for the W-FL championship right up to the very last game, a disappointing 20-0 loss to PennYan. The highlight of the season was the 25-0 upset victory over Mt. Carmel, who had not been beaten in two years. Mr. Manner’s second place team boasted of four All-Conference gridders: juniors Steve Lahr and Tony Calabrese, and senior linemen John Natti and Ed Goldstone. Also instrumental in the Big Red’s successful season were senior backs, Chuck Aiesi and Craig Lahr, who led the league in touchdowns this year. For the second year in a row the J.V.’s compiled a fine 4-2 record. This year the only losses were close (7-6) while the victories were one-sided. With the aid of 54 pt. scorer Paul Manslank, the Panthers had an unbelievable offense and a defense which allowed an average of only 5.7 points every game. 21 mi 22 23 football ctjmltaders Row 1: Diana Davis, Jennifer Dee, Barb Gilbert. In 1967 Mr. Morrissette coached a victorious cross country team for the ninth straight year. Led by sophomore Joe Griffin, the Panther harriers won three dual meets and finished fourth in league competition despite an early season injury to their captain, Laury Beinert. As only two of the varsity runners were seniors, next year Geneva High’s harriers should have an excellent chance to live up to their championship reputation which Coach Morrissette has created. 24 This year two winter sports excelled in tough sectional action. Steve Achilles won a Section 5 shield in wrestling after defeating Whitaker of Monroe in the semi’s and Pace of Corning West in the finals. The cagers also reached the finals in Section 5 competition as they finished second, beating Irondequoit, Corning East, and Monroe to earn a shot at the shield. However there were still bright spots as Coach Heard was very impressed with freshman John Deledonne and the Section 5 doubles team of Don Starr and Bob Lagana. Encouraged by the eager youths on this year’s team, Mr. Heard expects to have a more experienced team next year and perhaps a return to a championship season. 25 sfmmming Finmen Opponents 42 Aquinas 53 59 Oakfield 36 43 Newark 52 42 Aquinas 53 60 Auburn 35 24 Canandaigua 71 48 Oakfield 47 44 Newark 51 42 Canandaigua 53 47 Auburn 48 Won 3 Lost 7 Row 1: Pete Kimball, mgr., Glade Hall, Tom Natti, Jon Dee, Dick Cocola, Tom Tol-an. The Geneva High swimmers, as expected, showed marked improvement from previous years as a result of our new, much enlarged pool. Although winning only three meets (which is better than the past several seasons), the Panther Finmen often were not beaten until the last event. Co-captain Gary Voss was responsible for the breaking of three school records: the 100 yard butterfly and the 200 and 400 yard freestyles. In the Class B. sectionals, Gary placed fifth and sixth in the 100 yard butterfly and the 200 yard freestyle respectively. Also representing the Geneva team in the sectionals were Scott Smith, a third in diving, Tom Currie, sixth in the 100 yard butterfly, and the medley relay team, composed of Bob Myles, Murray Heaton, Tom Currie, and Joe Tandle, came in sixth. 26 The Senior Finmen. 27 fraratg basketball Geneva Opponents 74 Mynderse 79 66 Lyons 49 71 Penn Yan 53 83 Victor 49 83 Canandaigua 56 77 Newark 54 81 Waterloo 62 80 Batavia 51 78 DeSales 39 Won 8 Lost 1 First Half Row 1: Dave Ferris, Don Williams, Henry Howard, Rich Blue, Steve Strait. A terrific offense and defense sparked the Big Red to big victories as they completed the season with an average edge of 21 points every game. Herb Sellers paced the cagers offensively with a 17 point average, while Don Williams and Steve Lahr monopolized the rebounds. As the 5 starters all averaged more than 12 points every game, the Panthers boasted of great team effort and versatility. In the sectionals Geneva continued its fine playing and running as they defeated Irondequoit in the pre-quarterfinals. Corning East in the quarterfinals, and Monroe in the semifinals, before bowing finally to a tremendous Brockport team in the finals. Leaving this season after helping Coach Spader to a 37-3 record over the past two years will be the five outstanding seniors: Rich Blue, Henry Howard, Herb Sellers, Donnie Williams, and Dave Ferris. 28 junior imrsitg basketball J. Co-captain Steve Achilles, 133 pounder, was Geneva’s most valuable wrestler, winning a W-FL title and a Section V shield. Of the regular 12 varsity grapplers, only 2 were seniors, 2 juniors, and the remainder sophomores and freshmen. This implies that next year the Panthers will greatly improve their 5-3 league record and that, with a little more experience, they will make a serious bid for the conference title. 32 junior imrettg farestling J. The 1967 lacrosse team proved to be the best lacrosse squad ever at Geneva High. With great positive attitude and team effort, Mr. Manners’ stickmen shattered 16 individual and team records on way to the Western Conference title of the Upstate Lacrosse League. The top scorer was record-breaking Jon Ryan with 58 points. The outlook for 1968 seems bright, as ten of the top fourteen scorers will return and no first-string defensemen are leaving. A hard place to fill, however, will be goalie Bill Abraham’s, whose career save total of 504 is an all-time G.H.S. high. 34 junior txaratg lacrosse J. V. 's Opponents 4 E. Statistically, the Panthers really earned the W-FL crown: Geneva hurlers allowed 33 runs while the Panther batters accumulated 120 runs, showing their dominance on the baseball diamond. Leading this team to its 13-3 record was its Captain and most valuable player, Craig Fisher, who, for the last three years has often demonstrated his pitching ability on the mound. I especially appreciate the hospitality. In Belgium, I have already graduated. However, my former school is not at all comparable to a high school in the United States. When I return, I will study at the University of Louvain, majoring in biology. I want to thank everyone at school for being so friendly and my International Fellowship family for their hospitality. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life because I have learned much. I have improved my English and learned to be more independent. These things will be important to me and to my future. 66 foreign exchange students When I return home this summer, I will take back with me the experience of a new life, that is, my life here. I will miss the Michaels family, with whom I am staying, as well as other friends. Instead of football and basketball, I will be watching bullfighting. Xavier Loaiza-Mexico This year, made available to me by the International Christian Youth Exchange, has been wonderful. I think that each nation has a different mentality, and being here has made me see the optimistic, open America. It has made me slower to judge people and broadened my view. Ideally, my first two university semesters will be in the United States. 67 Gunther Lehmann-Germany underclass soptjottuim Sitting: Donna DeYulio, treas.; Anne Causey, sec. WUERTENBERGER in nmnnriam 99 100 101 %m tors I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen, of meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have been; Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were, with morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair. I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be when winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see. For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood in every spring there is a different green. I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago, and people who will see a world that 1 shall never know. But all the while I sit and think of times there were before, I listen for returning feet and voices at the door. —J.R.R.
