DEDICATION A democratic way of life has been the goal of mankind for centuries. It has not been solely the white man’s struggle, nor will it continue to be. Seldom do we stop to think that the American Indian fought for his freedoms just as ardently as any one of us. He died for what he believed in ... his home, his land, his nation. Even today we see the courage and determination that characterized the spirit of the Indian reflected in the faces of the oppressed; struggling, as the Indian struggled, to gain this birthright of freedom which many of us take for granted. Perhaps it will not happen tomorrow, perhaps not within our lifetime—but some day mankind will elevate itself to the position of dignity and respect it deserves. Someday our descendents will look back upon the injustices of our time and they will feel pity for our ignorance, scorn for our petty race prejudices, and detestation for the countless instances of man’s exploitation of his fellowman. It is to that elusive someday that this book is dedicated. 2
