Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1961 volume:

A peace is of the nature of a conquest; For then both parties nobly are subdued. And neither party loser. II Henry IV The pathway of peace is the longest and most beset with obstacles the human race has to tread; the goal may be distant, but to this goal we must dedicate our lives. SENECA SAGA DEDICATION To be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars, to be satisfied with your possessions but not contented with yourself until you have made the best of them, to despise nothing in the world except falsehood and meanness and to fear nothing except cowardice, to be governed by your admirations rather than by your disgusts, to covet nothing that is your neighbor’s except his kindness of heart and gentleness of manners, to think seldom of your enemies, often of your friends, and every day of Christ, and to spend as much time as you can, with body and with spirit, in God’s out-of-doors, these are little guide-posts on the footpath to peace. Henry Van Dyke 5 IN MEMORIAM JOHN ARNOLD SWIFT 6 FORE WORD As the yearbook staff of the Class of 1961 chooses a theme for this edition, it is acutely aware of the manifold crises rampant in the world today. It seems only too clear that the students of this class are approaching maturity at a critical period of history. Within their lifetime and thru the combined efforts of many nations, a peace—if only in name—has been established. As they prepare to take their rightful places in the world, it will be their duty not only to preserve this peace but also to promote it to a fuller, more complete peace for which the whole world hungers. Thus, it is only fitting that this Senior Annual, the last joint endeavor of the Class of 1961, be dedicated to the attainment of so solemn an objective. The struggle toward a universal peace—once the grave concern of parents alone—has now passed to them, the new generation of Americans. 7 The courage and determination of the young men at Iwo Jima are the models which our class has always striven to emulate. Class History Just how excited is it possible for a group of students to be? This question can only be answered by a new class of sophomores entering high school, and our class was no exception. New teachers, a new building, and new responsibilities made September 1959 a hectic but wonderful month. After our officers got into the groove we undertook the traditional projects of selling pencils and basketball programs. The big social event of the year was our Sophomore Hop, “Holiday of Hearts.” As Juniors we filled our treasury with proceeds from the football refreshment stand, our spring magazine drive, and the Junior Play, “Onions in the Stew.” As a result of the success of these projects we presented our memorable Junior Prom, “Enchanted Fathoms.” Almost before realizing it, our class entered its third and final year at G.H.S. Once again our magazine drive helped finance a memorable evening. February 4, 1961, marked our Senior Ball, “Shangri-la.” Our final public offering as a class was “The Desk Set,” our hilarious Senior Play. For every class of excited sophomores, there is always a class of reminiscent Seniors, and once again our class is no exception. 10 Awards Ken Braun, Harvard Book Award; Dick Atkinson, Allan Green, Helen Goff, Syracuse Citizenship Conference; Linda Colella, Elmira Key Award. With a tropical garden as a centerpiece, the dance floor was a paradise of seashells and starfish. The tantalizing rhythms of Frank Fennell’s orchestra soon became the murmur of the sea. And as each couple danced, they knew this dream come true would never be forgotten! 12 13 Dream On “Onions in the Stew' “Collins, Esq.” “Charlie, My Boy” So who’s going to park??? 14 Minstrels, 1961 Jerry Bond, Sally Carr, Erik Collins. 15 Her Majesty! Gloria Choffin was crowned queen amidst a decor of Japanese surroundings. Her attendants were Anne Glass and Vickie Bullock. To the exotic strains of Bob Hunt’s orchestra every couple could have danced all night. As they have been led by her, so may we be led by the inspiration and guidance of our high school staff and faculty. In this era when the world powers are seeking to control or ward off the influences of each other, there is a strong tendency to counter such challenges through increased armaments. It is most heartening to note that your class is dedicating its aims to “peace.” The attainment of peaceful coexistence, world understanding and mutual respect rests greatly upon the shoulders of your generation. My personal best wishes that your goal may be attained. Melvin C. Livingston Superintendent of Schools Board of Education Throughout your school career you have been looking forward to your senior year in Geneva High School. The challenges of your studies, extra-curricular events, etc., have been met, and you leave a glorious heritage for those who follow. Now you are on the threshold of new adventures and new challenges. Those of us who have had a part in your public school education have confidence that you will meet these challenges with courage, diligence, initiative and self-determination; and leave a rich heritage for those who follow. My personal best wishes for your success. Albert C. Lindemann Assistant Superintendent Front Row: Mr. Frederick M. Toole, Mrs. M. Edgerton Deuel. Second Row: Mr. Lloyd E. Curtis, Mr. Michael G. Michaels, Mr. Leonard Kornet, Mr. Melvin C. Livingston, Mr. Albert C. However, as the Class of 1961 moves from high school into adult participation, it enters a world fraught with more tensions and problems than ever before. My hope and wish for you is that twenty-five years from now it will be said that the members of the Class of 1961 have contributed more of their talents and abilities to the solution of mankind’s problems than any class heretofore. This I leave with you as a compliment, an ambition and a challenge. S. B. Wuertenberger Congratulations and best wishes to the “space age” Class of 1961. Our mechanized, urbanized way of life makes it difficult to keep fit to participate in this wonderful but strenuous era. The contribution you make to a healthy young America will depend on your “fitness.” I am confident that you will train hard and win. Football Any Geneva fan who attended that first game at Auburn knew from the start that the Panthers would be the team to beat this year. They knew it as soon as they witnessed the 27-14 Panther victory. Skeptics who gave the victory to lady luck had only to look at the next week’s results as the Panthers took Waterloo in stride with a 21-19 victory. Lyons and Clyde went down in quick succession, and Geneva was tied for first place with Mynderse. Geneva fans hoped that the Big Red might stop the Mynderse Blue Devils, but this game proved to be Geneva’s first and only loss of the season. Bouncing back, Geneva beat Mt. Carmel, leaving only DeSales and Penn Yan to play. Coaches Gagnon and Leach beamed as Geneva trounced DeSales 59-12, piling up the largest winning margin of points since the rivalry began. A 32-16 victory over Penn Yan gave the Panthers a 7-1 season’s record, the best since 1951, and the trophy given by the Penn Yan American Legion to the winner of the Geneva-Penn Yan game. The 1960 Panther team certainly responded to the cheerleaders’ chant of, “We want a touchdown.” Geneva Opponent 27 Auburn 14 21 Waterloo 19 26 Lyons 19 20 Clyde 13 7 Seneca Falls 31 25 Mount Carmel 12 59 DeSales 12 32 Penn Yan 6 70 Jay Covert and Dan Plunkett, cocaptains; Mr. Gagnon, coach. Needless to say, Coach Keenan has many fine underclassmen who were of great value this year and will form a fine nucleus for next year’s team. Geneva was well represented at the sectionals and a few outstanding finmen walked off with state shields. When the Genevans lost, they were beaten by narrow margins which became narrower as the season advanced. Good luck in erasing that margin next year! 73 Basketball VARSITY TEAM—Standing: Mr. Spader, W. Wright, L. Akens, J. Acquilano, C. Kenney, R. Deuel, R. Mungo, J. Lee. R. Parrish, V. Chacchia, D. The most satisfying victories were the Varsity’s double defeat of DeSales. These two games were the most exciting of the season and gave the finishing touch to a successful year in basketball. 74 J.V. TEAM—Kneeling: D. Heathcrly, D. Snyder, T. Hannacker, D. Jackson, D. This year was no exception even though the Panthers were not able to hold on to their conference championship. The Geneva grapplers opened the season with a bang, winning their first three matches before being stopped by a tough Dansville team. After Dansville the Panthers went on to beat C.A. in a close match. They rolled up an impressive number of wins to give them another winning season, but unfortunately lost a few crucial meets which spelled the loss of their championship. Geneva had three semi-finalists vying for state shields. Mr. Leach was unable to coach the team the last few weeks so Mr. Morrissette proved an able substitute. Co-captains Pete Blum and Dick Atkinson were among the group of Seniors whose graduation will leave Mr. Leach with a few holes to fill, but most Genevans look forward to another strong wrestling team. Their performance in ’60 indicates that the ’61 baseball team will be the strongest in many years. The team started out by winning a series of close games to take the league lead, which they never relinquished. At the end of the season Geneva and Penn Yan were tied for first place but the Panthers won the playoff game— and the League Championship. Outside the league, Geneva played well enough to place third in the conference. With all but three of the first team returning, Coach Spader has hopes for another winning record and another league championship. Although the team did not distinguish itself with a winning record, they did demonstrate a spirit and a will to win that was unmatched anywhere else in the league. From a group of beginners in the sport, they developed in- to a team which rightfully earned the respect and admiration of their opponents. Coach Manners expressed satisfaction with his team for their fine showing on the field, remarking that, “Most of the goals scored against us could be attributed to our inexperience.” 81 Geneva Opponent 43 Ithaca 51 62 Canandaigua 38 73 PennYan 26 60 Auburn 39 Elmira Relays ... 5th place Kiwanis Relays .. . 3rd place Finger Lakes Champions Sectionals ... 4th place The 1960 squad was Mr. Morrissette’s second championship track team. For the past two years there has been a pessimistic note in the write-ups for bowling in the “Seneca Saga.” However, this year Geneva has been outstanding. The first, third, and fourth men in the league are members of the Geneva team, and our bowlers were second in the league by only a few percentage points. To insure luck, a pessimistic prediction is in order, but the truth is that Geneva can hope for a winning team next year. 85 Girls basketball Front Row: E. Simpson, J. Adam. C. Heit, C. Corwin, E. Seneca Saga The Seneca Saga staff, together with Mr. Gaffney and Mr. Paradiso, are the devoted producers of this 1961 annual. With Anne Glass as Editor-in-Chief, the staff held countless meetings at any number of various places. Discussion first centered on the all important matter of deciding on a theme. The book then had to be molded and remolded to fit our theme of peace. Only after these initial stages could the real work begin—taking photographs, drawing layout, and writing copy. The staff hopes that this book gives its readers as much enjoyment as they had in preparing it. 90 Linda Coleila—Lit. Ed., Allan Green—Sports Ed., Bonnie Whitweli—Lit. Ed. A good deal of the legislative power has been vested in this organization throughout the years. Council this year, with George Michaels as president, has also undertaken projects of a non-legislative nature. For instance, it sponsored a Christmas party for about 40 underprivileged children. Other such projects were the exchange assembly with Waterloo and the exchange trip with Irondequoit. With no other faculty intervention, save some occasional suggestions in a weekly executive agenda meeting with Mr. Wuertenberger, the Student Council operates on its own. Teachers are invited to observe the weekly meetings, and they leave with only praise on their lips. G. Lindcmann—Treas., S. Andersen—Rec. Sec., H. Goff—G. O. Treas., B. Whitwell—Corr. Sec., G. Under the leadership o f Marilyn Green, general manager-treasurer, and Mr. Griffee, the advisor, the members of the club not only take the pictures, but develop and print them as well. The results are posted on the bulletin board for sale to the student body. This year the club has extended its service to include photo coverage for other clubs, the Senior yearbook and the Senior Class graduation party. Front Row: M. Greene, R. Johnson, R. They must take care of all lighting, maintenance, and other aspects of behind-the-scenes production. Not only do they do this for school, but also for various Geneva Organizations such as the Civic Music Association. This crew really deserves a vote of thanks for its hard work and diligence. They are Girls’ and Boys’ Choruses respectively.
