Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1959 volume:

viyog y 1959 Seneca Volume XXXV Published by the Senior Class of Geneva High School Geneva, New York tf.otie.w uH With ready wings let’s onward sail, Into our Saga or Viking's tale. The Senior Class of ‘59, As Viking’s, does not sail the brine, But as we’ve proved with deeds untold We’re similar to these Norsemen bold. Grateful are we to Mrs. Small And Mr. Epley who’ve done their all. From cover to cover this book will tell That Almarco Printers did their job well, And Varden Studios, as you will see, Provided expert photography. We’d like to praise Mr. Rogers too For the artistic work we had him do. This Volume 35 to you we give So that in your hearts these memories live; The joys and sorrows, hopes and fears, The things we’ve done in our four years. %edicatio+i One may walk into the library at Geneva High School and find an atmosphere possessing an innate sense of order and clarity. The librarian shows a personal interest to students and faculty alike — advice without persuasion, help without conviction, and sympathy without emotionalism. These characteristics depict our class adviser and librarian, Mrs. Flood, to whom we dedicate with honor our senior annual, The 1959 Seneca Saga. In '55 we began to chart our course In a similar manner to the great old Norse But to keep us straight and to teach us lore We need the Earls of the Steering Oar. 7 Ou l Pbincifxali At the opening assembly of your Senior year, I reminded you that the leadership of the Senior Class would be the most important determinant in effecting whatever tone and attitude the student body would reach this year. You were privileged to be put to the test at the time of our evaluation. I was proud of you when the committee made special note of the morale and self-governing aspects of the student body. May each of you continue to seize every opportunity to make yourselves contributing citizens of the community, state, and nation. S. B. Wuertenberger, Principal. To the class of ’59: Having successfully completed your secondary education you are now going forth to greater achievements. With the preparation and inspiration you now have and with determination to succeed you should do well. Good luck to you. Arthur J. McCann, Vice-Principal. 9 BoasuH ojj CduccUio4t Standing: Mr. Melvin C. Livingston. Seated: Mr. Albert C. Lindemann, Mr. Michael G. Michaels, Mr. Frederick M. Toole, Mr. Howard Searles, Dr. Theodore Odell, President. Though many of us have never come into personal contact with the members of the Board of Education, we are all aware of the important part they play behind the scenes of our school and community. This year the Board has been engaged in initiating a study of an enlarged city school district. This would bring many non-resident students into the district. Another problem is that of finding space for approximately 200 elementary school students who are now housed in the high school, since there is no room in the three elementary schools. We extend our best wishes and congratulations to the Board for the job they are doing. 10 Qua Su i The size of our world in relation to the universe has materially decreased ever since you became high school seniors. The importance of more complete world cooperation and understanding is far more vital than was believed necessary just a year ago. As you go out from high school to pursue higher education or into other endeavors you will be confronted with seemingly insurmountable challenges because of the unprecedented progress in scientific developments. Your generation’s greatest contribution to society can be the bringing about of respect and understanding of all national ideologies and the channelling of our scientific progress toward the betterment of mankind rather than its destruction. Those of us who have had a part in your public school education have confidence that you can and will meet these challenges. We are also aware that the challenges can be met only with courage, diligence, initiative and self-determination on the part of each individual. My personal best wishes for your success. Melvin C. Livingston, Superintendent of Schools. To the Seniors: Throughout your school career you have looked forward in anticipation and trepidation to your final year in Geneva High School, and now so quickly has it passed! The beautiful Senior Ball, which will be long remembered, the teams that fought so valiantly, the plays, the Panther’s Pride, the Viking Yearbook — all compacted into a single year. And now you are on the threshold of a new adventure, an ever-expanding adventure of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We of die administration and faculty congratulate you and wish you well in this new adventure. Albert C. Lindemann, Asst. Superintendent of Schools. 11 Miss Andrew, M.A. Latin Mr. Bahn Physical Education Mr. Boncsteel, B.S. Science Mrs. Braun, M.S. Science Mr. Brown, M.S. There has always been prompt and fine service. The cafeteria is always clean, comfortable, and orderly. They have really done their best. The comfortable rooms, clean walls, floors, and windows of our school have been accomplished by the thorough efforts of our custodians. The students are maintained within the school while the custodians maintain the school. We take this opportunity to thank them for their help and work. Senior Together we have performed each courageous deed And have proven to all, our abilities to lead; Chiefs of warriors is thus our name And forever onward we will seek for fame. 15 ADELAIDE B. This has been an excellent opportunity and we hope Abraham has enjoyed his year at Geneva High. 9 t Mestt Uutn DAVID NYCE (1941-1958) We remember our former classmate, for he contributed so much to the betterment of our class and school. Dave was an active member of the Student Council and participated on the swimming and track teams. His life was exemplary of the standards of an Eagle Scout. We chose “Spring Sensation” as our name and what a sensation it was. The committee did a wonderful job under the capable leadership of co-chairman Cindy Bullock and Tom DeFazio. North Street gym was turned into a wonderland by decorations of all colors of the rainbow in pastel shades. Adding to the “sensational” air of the prom was the crowning of the queen — Cindy Bullock attended by Donna Yackel and Sherrill Green. Queen C. Bullock and attendants D. Yackel and S. Green. Sherrill Green received the Elmira Key Award and Brian Payson the Harvard Book Award for the class of “59.” We are very proud to have such fine students as members of our class. Congratulations! Besides our Viking or senior wings, it is a great honor to become a member of the National Honor Society. This destination is only reached by fifteen per cent membership of the class who excel in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. They are chosen by the faculty and are inducted in the spring of their junior year or the fall and spring of their senior year. With Miss Maney as the adviser this group has promoted the desire to learn and participate in Geneva High School. The school gives them the honor, their presence honors the school. ClaU jlonOAi S. Student Council, our school governing body, plays a decisive part in the life of Geneva High School. The homeroom and class representatives, executive committee, and advisers participate actively in council with the purpose of accurately representing the student body, alleviating student problems and making the school more enjoyable for the students. Forming the foundation of our student government are the executive committee and advisers. The executive committee headed by council president, Dave Morocco, has proven itself competent and efficient. Aiding the council with cooperation and interest, they have given Geneva High a more practical and a smoother running council. Mr. Wuertenberger and our faculty advisers have contributed beneficial advice which has lessened complications in council and increased student leadership in school management. The evidences of achievement in this year’s council are abundant. Talent Night, a project to help support our war orphan, was a great success whilethe Masquerade Ball, the proceeds going to CARE, also provided much enjoyment to the participants. The lounge, decorated by the House Committee, is enhanced by a jukebox and after school, students can purchase coke and candy from council’s machines. Further council achievements are the purchasing of new host and hostess equipment, choosing school assemblies, approving school charters, buying music equipment, caring for our orphan, Irene Stepien, and setting up athletic schedules and buses. A productive year has shown the council’s interest in Geneva High. Senior. Re iAeientcUiueA. Back Row: D. Yackel C. Bullock J. Warder B. Mathis J. Henningson First Row: M. Thiery R. Dewey J. The most outstanding contributions are awarded prizes, both cash grants and art equipment, and are judged on the basis of perfection, design and originality. The most highly esteemed award, the Hovey Award covers three fields, Industrial Arts, Mechanical Drawing, and Fine Arts. Besides their art ability the recipients of these awards must possess the following qualities: good citizenship, ability to work with others, leadership, and interest in art. We thank the Rotary for sponsoring this annual exhibit because not only does it inspire interest in art, but it also provides a fair method of competition, and offers us a means of viewing the accomplishments of Geneva High’s art students with an understanding of the art curriculum. The 1959 Seneca Saga staff was organized last year when Tom Arris was elected Editor-in-Chief. As soon as the other members were selected, the staff began to decide upon a theme. Under the expert guidance of Mrs. Whiting and Miss Lang, each girl has an opportunity to participate in the sport of her choice while earning points at the same time. The sports are well represented with golf, soccer, and field hockey in the fall; basketball, volleyball, and swimming in the winter; and golf, softball, tennis, and track in the spring. Play-days held at various schools or at Geneva High induce keen team spirit and sportsmanship. In order to maintain interest in the intramural program, a point system has been devised. Points are awarded for perfect attendance in gym class, play-day participation, and participation in the intramural sports. Extra points are given for being captain or manager of a team or for being secretary or treasurer of the bowling program. At the Girls’ Awards assembly in the spring, girls are recognized for their participation in sports on the basis of the points they have received. Numerals are awarded to the girl who has earned 250 points, a letter to the girl who has earned 500 points, and a gold bar for each 250 points above 500. If a girl earns 300 points, she is eligible for membership in Girls' Leaders Club. The highest girl’s award is presented at the Senior assembly. A trophy is awarded to the senior girl who has proved herself outstanding in the field of sports. This also depends on character, leadership, and service. The girls’ intramural program at Geneva High School is well deserved of praise, for it is a program to make every girl proud. 95 Qi h' Bcuuiuuf, Bach Row: C. Jones, J. Spina, P. Schiller, K. It serves as one remembrance of the four wonderful years we spent as students of Geneva High School. During those years we met many wonderful and interesting teachers and personnel. We would like to thank them for all their help, guidance, and time. They never hesitated to chaperone dances and games. They acted as advisers to our many clubs; especially those during our activity period. They helped the class of 1959 to put on plays, assemblies and to earn money and make each year a successful year. We are very grateful and we hope to prove in future years that this aid was not in vain. We would like to give special thanks to Miss White for helping the literary staff of the Seneca Saga, and the subscribers and advertisers for their patronage. The success of a yearbook depends on such people. As our senior year ends we hope that with this book we can remember our high school years; our years of happiness, of joy, of maturing, of learning, and of discovering. We must now look far into the distant horizon of our future but still 100 never forget our past four years in school. I afiden Studios, nc.
