Text from Pages 1 - 132 of the 1958 volume:

) FOREWORD As the Class of '58 we are proud to present our volume of the Seneca Saga. Through its pages, with the help of art work, photographs, and literary articles, we hope to convey to you an overall view of our accomplishments. Four years have gone by and we find ourselves on the verge of entering an entirely new life. Some of our most cherished memories concern the music for which Geneva High is noted. For this reason we have chosen music as the theme for our yearbook. The significance of the musical notes interspersed throughout the book is to arouse in our memories various school concerts, band and chorus rehearsals, records and orchestras to which we have danced, jubilant singing in buses, and the wail of a few seniors trying to harmonize. Three quotations, taken from pertinent songs, are found on the cover and division pages. These quotations most nearly express our feelings concerning each particular section. We are indebted to Mrs. Small and Mr. Epley for their invaluable assistance in the production of the Seneca Saga. Their advice, patience, and cooperation have been deeply appreciated. Miss White, who corrected all the literary work, also deserves our special thanks. In the Seneca Saga we have included individual pictures of the seniors and accounts of their achievements. The pages set aside are enhanced by photographs of memorable occasions, and the class history. The history consists of a brief resume of our activities and some philosophical advice for the underclassmen. Also portrayed individually is the faculty, who has carefully guided us through our studies and activities. In addition, our extracurricular activities, with special emphasis on Student Council, the Music Department, and athletics, are pictured and described. We wish to acknowledge Varden Studios for its outstanding photography, and the Almarco Printing Company for printing our material with such care, especially Mr. Cowan, who helped considerably with the layout arrangement. Georgia State College granted us permission to use a quotation from its Alma Mater and we are very grateful. And now, you will read the Saga of our Senior Class, the Class of '58, the Class with a song in its heart. 4 DEDICATION On behalf of the Class of 1958 we are happy fo dedicate volume 34 of the Seneca Saga to our teacher, friend, and advisor. He has given unselfishly of his time and energy, has merited the respect and admiration of the student body, and has for the past three years been advisor to the Class of 1958. We dedicate with pride our senior annual to Mr. Thomas Godkin. 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION 7 -16 CLASSES 17-48 ACTIVITIES 49-74 ATHLETICS 75-96 99 - 122 6 ADVERTISEMENTS Jhru the years the standards of you— BOARD OF EDUCATION Back Row: Mr. F. Toole, Mr. A. Lindemann. Front Row: Dr. T. Odell, Mr. M. Michaels, Mr. H. Searles, Mr. M. Livingston. Although we as students do not come in close contact with the Board of Education, we do recognize the work and service of the members of the Board. We especially appreciate the Board's problems this year since it became necessary to house several sixth grades in Geneva High School because of the overcrowding in the grade schools. This year Geneva welcomed a new Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Melvin C. Livingston. Even though he has been here only a short time, those of us who know him respect him and admire him. We hope that Mr. Livingston finds success and happiness in his new job. Recently Mrs. Kenneth Fairfax, an active Board member, found it necessary to resign. We wish to thank her for her hard work and her service to Geneva's youth. At the same time we wish to welcome her successor Mrs. Benjamin Clark. To the Board of Education we give our thanks and our support and to the newcomers we extend our warmest welcome. 10 Mr. Livingston, Superintendent of Schools Mankind will always face problems. Most of these will center around or be generated by the interplay of human relationships. If we human beings could undertake to solve these problems with the spirit of good fellowship and good humor, I am convinced that we could make faster progress toward the settlement of these problems than we are now. If there is one characteristic of che members of the class of 1958 that I will remember it is their ability to face their problems with reasonable good humor and with a sense of fairness toward all. I can think of no better hope for the future or better commendation to you than to preserve this outlook. My best wishes go with you. S. B. WUERTENBERGER Our Principal. I have liked your class through the years. Your accomplishments have been great. There are many good things that can be said about you, and now that you are leaving may I say sincerely, Good Bye and Good Luck. ARTHUR J. McCANN Our Vice Principal. Although it has not been my privilege to know your class during its entire high school career, my brief associations have been a genuine pleasure. The challenges before your generation are tremendous and the solutions to world problems to a great extent may well rest in your hands. My sincere best wishes for your success. MELVIN C. CAFETERIA EMPLOYEES AND CUSTODIANS Back Row: M. Holmes, M. Wills, H. Sigler, E Bennett, N. Berryman. Front Row: I. Carroll, E. Hall, M. Ritter. While attending Geneva High School we have been indebted to the Cafeteria. Every day we are able to eat a nourishing and well-balanced noon meal, cooked carefully and served attractively. We look forward to lunch as a period of good food and relaxation, provided by the tireless work of the women in the Cafeteria. Another necessary and appreciated service to Geneva High School is the work of the custodians. Few of us realize the tremendous task that faces these men. The school and its grounds are always comfortable and clean. One frequently hears the cheerful whistle of either Mr. Hall or Mr. Johnson as he goes about the business of maintaining the condition of the building. We are proud of our school's appearance and those who make it possible. 16 To us, as freshmen, everything seemed new and strange. We eagerly anticipated our Senior Year . . Time has flown. Our activities deserve a special place in the Seneca Saga. In order to receive a broad education activities are as necessary as class room study. The diversified activities of Geneva High School have taught us to work, serve, and cooperate with our class mates. Service to Geneva High School and the community is the purpose of several activities. With the help of Mrs. Flood, the Library Club puts away books, collects fines, and attends to some of the library's more consuming duties. The boys of Projection Club and Stage Crew are always eager to operate a movie or manage the difficult arrangement of the stage. This year, at basketball games, the Hot Rod Club assisted the spectators by directing them in parking their cars. The Junior Red Cross sponsors charity drives among the students, and makes decorative favors to cheer those confined in hospitals. Participation in other activities helps us with our future vocations. The Future Homemakers and Future Farmers of America gather information, by sponsoring pertinent contests and drives that will prove helpful in the home or on the farm. Students who are interested in becoming teachers find that membership in Future Teachers of America is extremely beneficial. Here they are able to learn about the vocation and its advantages and disadvantages. French Club and Biology Club offer their members fun and learning, pleasantly combined at informal meetings. The newly formed Camera Club is providing us with interesting shots of games, dances, and other events as well as starting some of us in the profession of photography. Activities keep us enthusiastically occupied and make us better citizens. All of us will remember the fun and pleasure that we have derived from working together to help others and ourselves. 48 m STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE I. Anderson, Recording Sec. J. McIntosh, Corresponding Sec. G. Lattimer, Pres. J. Schoen-Rene, Vice-Pres. L. Rynders, Treas. S. Petersen Asst. Treas. Student Council, a consuming interest, is the governing body of Geneva High School. We participate in Council as voting citizens, as Council representatives and as its officers. This year we have an excellent Student Council as well as one of the most progressive student government systems in this area. President George Lattimer, a competent and efficient leader, has secured the cooperation and respect of Council, the students, and the faculty. Under his leadership, and with the assistance of the executive committee, the organization of Council has been practically flawless. The achievements of this year's Council are evident. Stunt Night, successfully netted $300 for the Korean War Orphan. Council arranged for the transportation to out of town” athletic events and distributed athletic schedules. One of the highlights of the year was the transformation of the little gym into a combination lounge, lunch room, and senior honor studyhall. The atmosphere was provided by paint, curtains, and a juke box. Student Council's job was made less complicated and the members were further prepared for future citizenship through the sympathetic understanding and beneficial advice of the principal, Mr. Wuertenberger, and the faculty advisors. The monitor system with Sam Pane as head and Dick Darling, Chief Justice of Student Court, have helped to lessen the faculty's burden of being entirely responsible for irresponsible students. Student Court is composed of four associate judges, a chief justice, and a faculty adviser. Student Court is another step to promote student government in Geneva High School. MONITORS Back Row: W. Twice a year the faculty bestows this honor on those students who best display the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. By the end of the year the Society consists of 15% of the senior class and 5% of the junior class. We hope that membership into the National Honor Society continues to be the goal to which the students of Geneva High School will strive. Back Row: J. Anderson M. Fordon A. Senne D. Hesser G. George Lattimer and Betsy Ross . received these awards. Jean McIntosh, Molly Otis, and Alex Addona were chosen by their classmates and the faculty to attend the annual Citizenship Conference at Syracuse University. In her junior year, Julie Scho-en-Rene represented Geneva High School as a guest of the New York State Senate in Albany. Here their accomplishments are displayed and the people of Geneva have an opportunity to view and understand our school's art curriculum. After careful judging, prizes are awarded to the students with the most outstanding contributions. The Hovey Award is the exhibit's most highly esteemed prize. The award covers three fields: Industrial Arts, Mechanical Drawing, and Fine Art. The recipients of these awards must adhere to the following qualifications: good citizenship, ability to work with others, leadership, proficiency, and interest in future art problems and careers. In 1957, Charles Voider received the Hovey Award for Industrial Arts; Ronald Celentano, the award for Mechanical Drawing; and Jane Wuertenberger, the Fine Arts award. The Rotary Art Exhibit also offers awards for perfection, design, and originality. Prizes are made in cash grants, as well as in art equipment. We are grateful to the Rotary Organization for sponsoring the annual Art Exhibit. It inspires an interest in art, both creative and practical and provides a fair method of competition. C. Valder, T. Second First The Photo Service Club, which was established as a result of the presentation of the Crown Graflex Camera by the class of '57, has proven itself to be one of Geneva High School's most outstanding clubs. The members of this club are those people who are interested in photography and wish to know more about the taking, developing and enlarging of pictures. We all have noticed the pictures displayed by the Photo Service Club in the trophy case. The club's members take pictures of various school functions, such as dances, assemblies, and athletics and then develop and enlarge them for the enjoyment of others. The Photo Service Club assisted the Seneca Saga staff by developing and contributing the twelve candid pictures used on the senior pages. The staff wishes to express its sincere thanks. 65 B. SENIOR PLAY On March 29 a successful comedy was staged at Geneva High School by the Class of '58 under the direction of Mr. Grammar, director, and Thomas Higgins, student director. Three Blind Mice, a three act comedy opens to find Pam, Elizabeth, and Moira Mason registered in an exclusive Miami Beach Hotel. The three sisters had sold their inherited chicken farm to finance husband catching campaigns for each of them. They were to take turns being the rich Miss Mason, her secretary, and maid. The action begins when their hometown lawyer Henry Trowbridge finds them and refuses to give them any more money to finance such a folly. Things really begin to roll when Pam's plans to marry Albert Dupont are upset because she discovers that he is a social director at the hotel rather than a rich guest. A final attempt on Steve Harrington, a rich playboy, also fails. Thanks to Henry the mystery is finally uncovered and the play ends on a happy note—a wedding march. Lending their ability to the production are Shirley Spahn as Elizabeth, Carol McLellan as Moira, Mary Stempel as Pam, Paul Dhalle as Henry Trowbridge, Brenda Wright as the gossip columnist, Edna Parker, Larry Adkinson as Steve Harrington, Cam Ingram as the aging playboy, Betsy Rose as Mrs. Bramber, George Lattimer as Albert Dupont, and Thomas Higgins as Mr. Cord, the Hotel Manager. 66 M. Our Junior Year rolled around before we knew it, and soon we were making plans for our first big class project, our Junior Prom. Under the capable leadership of our co-chairmen, Carol Abbott and Alex Addona, our plans for the big night moved smoothly along. We called our Prom the Carribean Cruise and to the class of '58 it certainly marked a milestone in our trip through high school. The date was set for May 4. As the day approached, the dance became the sole topic of conversation among the Juniors. After the weeks of planning, the big night finally arrived. The gym of North Street School was transformed into a romantic shipboard for our Carribean Cruise. The climax of the evening was the crowning of Gertrude Patrick as Queen and Juliet Schoen-Rene and Carol Abbott as her attendants. L. Rynders, P. McWilliams, C. Ingram, H. Rosenbloom C. Judy Wethey and Chuck Robson, co-chairmen, guided the various committees to make the evening a brilliant success. Dancing to the music of Ken Renick's Band, we were reminded of activities of our class by clever murals. Keeping with the theme, the gym was decorated with pink and lavender crepe paper, with a large clock to signify the passing of an all too-short high school career. Lynne Rynders, crowned Queen of the Ball by the president, Tom Phillips, and her attendants, Jean McIntosh and Mary Fordon, made a stunning court. Although our Senior Ball is over, we can agree that it was one of our most cherished Moments to Remember. L. Rynders, Queen; M. Fordon, Jean McIntosh, attendants. Crowning of Queen by T. MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Geneva High School music program is one of the school's most outstanding and meriting features. The varous musical groups provide education and fun for the participants as well as entertainment for the schools and community of Geneva. The department is under the direction of Mr. Godfrey Brown, a graduate from Ithaca College where he obtained his Masters Degree. Mr. Brown is known by almost all the students at Geneva High School as Brownie. He is always ready to assist anyone who is interested in music and is unreplaceable in assisting at Talent Nite” and other school programs not directly connected with his musical groups. We are all indebted to Brownie for his inestimable work for Geneva High School's music program. Nearly every spring the music groups attend an annual New York State Music Festival held at.Ithaca. At this festival contests are sponsored where high school musicians have the opportunity to learn how well they are doing and to compare themselves with the participating schools of other cities in New York State. The choral and instrumental groups are rated on an A, B, C, method according to the grade of music which they have to offer. Vocal and instrumental soloists are judged in the same manner. Our students derive much pleasure from these contests and frequently honor Geneva High School with exceptional ratings. Last spring Mr. Brown and Mr. William Grammar, dramatic coach at Geneva High School, combined their talent and effort to produce Rodgers' and Hammer-stein's Carousel, a musical comedy which is a hit wherever it is produced — on 70 BOYS' CHORUS R. Geneva, displayed in this production. The many spectators and students who viewed and took part in this production will remember it forever and will never forget the wonderful experiences it gave them. Varsity Chorus, Boys' Chorus, and Girls' Chorus are the three major choral groups at Geneva High School. They perform at assemblies and have entertained various community organizations. In the past, Mr. Brown has willingly relinquished his time to organize such groups as Chordettes and Harmonettes which have provided extra-curricular activity for those students with special musical interest and ability. They have traveled to various area hospitals and nursing homes to provide a few hours entertainment and relaxation for the patients. This year, a new vocal group, which certainly deserves recognition, is the Troubadours. They are a group selected from Varsity Chorus who sing spirituals and religious numbers. Their performances have been highly successful especially at Talent Nite. The band and jazz orchestra form another important section of the music department. The band has a wide collection of marches and school songs which it performs at assemblies, local parades, and basketball and football games. It goes without dispute that our school assemblies and athletic events would not be complete without the closing Alma Mater played by the band. The orchestra plays for concerts and dances. Occasionally a few members of the orchestra get together and present a jam session. The band and orchestra together help to inspire a strong feeling of school spirit in the students of Geneva High. Each year all these groups work together and produce a colorful Christmas assembly, featuring the ever-popular The Night Before Christmas. A highly professional concert is also presented each spring by the music department. This concert 72 VARSITY MAJORETTES J. Arris, D. Guerrie,_j£— Akens, M. Aliens, E. Choifin, K. This May, the music department and Student Council combined to bring Reese Markewich and the Mark V to Geneva High School for a concert, New Designs in Jazz. Not only were they able to raise money for band uniforms but they introduced a new medium of music appreciation. The Majorettes are one of the most prominent groups connected with the music department. This year, under the leadership of Judy Anderson, they led the Geneva High School band at parades and provided half-time entertainment at basketball J. V. MAJORETTES B. Morocco, P. Williams, C. Each year, they are judged and placed on either the Varsity or J.V. squads according to their ability. Geneva High School is proud of the outstanding talent of the majorettes and displays this pride as they perform before visiting schools at basketball games. Music is certainly an important part of Geneva High School. To the many students who have participated in it, the music program has provided a valuable education, and for all the students it has inspired school spirit and pride. For these reasons, the Class of '58 has selected music as their theme for this volume of the Seneca Saga. Back Row: H. Solomon, J. Schoen-Rene, C. Rosenbloom, R. Fennell, N. Moses, P. Dhalle, W. The Geneva High girls' intramurals program is designed in such a way that each girl is able to acquire both the fun of competition and a certain number of points each time she participates in an intramural sport. Led by Mrs. Whiting and Miss Lang, the girls have a choice of either swimming or speedball in the fall; basketball, bowling, or volley ball in the winter; and tennis, golf, softball, or track in the spring. Teams are organized to attend the play days at various surrounding schools, or at Geneva High. To stimulate an interest in the intramural program, a point system has been set up. A certain number of points is obtained for each of the following: regular participation in the intramural program, captain or manager of a team, perfect attendance in gym class, play day participation, and secretary or treasurer of the bowling program. At the Senior assembly at the end of the year, awards based on the point system and personal achievements are given. The Varsity G is awarded to a girl who has earned 500 points in intramurals or who has participated as a cheerleader. For each additional 250 points over 500, a girl is awarded a gold bar, but only one a year. Numerals are awarded to the girl who has earned 250 points. If she earns 300 points she is eligible for membership in Leaders' Club, a highly esteemed club based on leadership, athletic participation, and scholarship. The highlight of the assembly is the presentation of a trophy to the Senior girl who has proven herself the outstanding girl athlete. This award is not based on athletic ability alone, but on cooperation, sportsmanship, and general leadership, The girls' intramural program at Geneva High School is something in which each girl should participate, for it is one that she may well be proud of. 91 G IR LE A t Back Row: C.
