d ed ication For his outstanding part in guidance; for his faithful participation in class and committee meetings; for his diligence and interest, which overcame the obstacle of his teaching in another building; and for his unselfish devotion of time and energy expended in behalf of the Class of ’57, we dedicate our yearbook—The 1957 Seneca Saga—to Mr. Irving Griffee our class advisor, who for three years has directed us as we have “journeyed through our halls of ivy.” 5

foreword As a permanent record of our precious memories and numerous achievements accumulated in the last four years, we the Class of 1957, present Volume 33 of the Seneca Saga. Within this book we will attempt to explain, while illustrating a realistic picture of school life at Geneva High School—with special emphasis on the members of the Senior Class, and their short stay in high school. By now you have noticed the significant part ivy is playing in our annual. All the students of G.H.S. are aware of the famous ivy blanketing the outside walls of the building. It has seemed to share in our experiences of the last four years. In the verses of “Our Halls of Ivy” our feelings, upon leaving these halls, are expressed so well. Appropriately located at the beginning, you will meet the faculty and the administration, to whom we owe our success. They are the ones who have enthusiastically guided us these past years, often with great patience, so we might be better prepared to assume the many responsibilities confronting us in a few short years. Included here are the members of our Board of Education, our principals, and our teachers. Encountered next will be the section set aside for the classes, especially the seniors. Special attention is given to each individual’s accomplishment offering a clue to each one’s personality. This year, for the first time, group pictures of the Seniors are seen in this section, each photo typifying a phase of life at Geneva High. Of course, our various activities constitute an essential part of our four years and to these has been devoted a special division. Here you will discover our governing body, honors achieved, highlights in the history of our class, organizations of the school, and our fine music department. To complete a well-rounded education, discipline of the body, as well as of the mind, is necessary. Therefore our sports section deserves a prominent place in our annual. Special recognition is given to deserving individuals, with accent on our skilled teams, of which we are proud, not only for their fine records, but also for their good sportsmanship. The coaches, who mold our sports program, have earned high recognition. Don’t miss the snapshots at the end of this section, which depict the hidden lives of many Seniors, as only the candid camera can. The Seneca Saga Staff would like to pause here to thank our advisors, Mrs. Small and Mr. Epley, who have both given so much of their time unselfishly. We appreciate the efforts of our artist, Mr. Rogers. To Varden Studios we are grateful for the outstanding photography, and thanks go also to the Al-marco Printing Company. Permission for the copyright of The Halls of Ivy has been granted by Chappell Co., Inc. So, as we regretfully leave our hallow’d halls of ivy, it is the fond hope of the Class of 1957 that, by preserving our spirit and our achievements in this edition, the echo of our footsteps may still be heard in these very halls during the years to come. 4
