board of ed ucatioii Standing—Mr. Searles, Mr. Lindemann, Mr. Houseman, Superintendent. Sitting—Mrs. Fairfax, Mr. Michaels, Mr. Ryan, Mr. Odell, President. W. Lynn Houseman Superintendent of Schools The public school system in Geneva owes a great deal to the accomplishments of its Board of Education. The Board, with its numerous projects, guides and encourages our education beginning with kindergarten on through graduation from high school. The entire community will benefit from its two new elaborate school buildings completed this year. In February of this year, the Board was grieved by the death of one of its very active members, Mr. James M. Ryan. A Board member since 1943, his services to the Geneva public schools were of lasting value. Elected to succeed him on the Board was Mr. Frederick M. Toole, a local attorney. The retirement of the Superintendent of Public Schools, Mr. W. Lynn Houseman, was announced after forty-nine years of outstanding service in the field of education. For thirty-one years he has capably directed the local public school system and has also received recognition throughout the state. A native of Oneida, Mr. Houseman attended the local schools there. In 1908 he was graduated from Colgate with a B.S. degree and received a M.A. degree from Columbia in 1921. His graduate work was done at Cornell, New York, and Syracuse Universities. He received the distinction of being elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Geneva High owes much to his leadership in education. It is with regret that we bid him farewell, but we wish him a well-deserved and happy retirement.

otir principals One of the chief characteristics of the ivy which you have chosen as the principal part of the theme of your beautiful annual is its adaptability when put in a changed environment and its tenacity in achieving its goal. I can think of no two characteristics which the members of the Class of 1957 will need more intensively in the years to come. Do not be reactionary. Be flexible and open minded, but once having put your roots in and set your goal, drive toward it with all the tenacity of purpose you can muster. Do this and I know that we will always be proud of our alumni of the Class of 1957. Principal Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of ’57. As you leave our halls of ivy may the afterglow reflect your efforts of the past four years. 9
