SENECA SAGA VOLUME 33 published by the SENIOR CLASS OF GENEVA HIGH SCHOOL GENEVA, NEW YORK contents FOREWORD .................... 4 DEDICATION .................. 5 FACULTY ..................... 7 CLASSES .................... 15 ACTIVITIES ................. 47 ATHLETICS .................. 73 ADVERTISEMENTS 93 foreword As a permanent record of our precious memories and numerous achievements accumulated in the last four years, we the Class of 1957, present Volume 33 of the Seneca Saga. Within this book we will attempt to explain, while illustrating a realistic picture of school life at Geneva High School—with special emphasis on the members of the Senior Class, and their short stay in high school. By now you have noticed the significant part ivy is playing in our annual. All the students of G.H.S. are aware of the famous ivy blanketing the outside walls of the building. It has seemed to share in our experiences of the last four years. In the verses of “Our Halls of Ivy” our feelings, upon leaving these halls, are expressed so well. Appropriately located at the beginning, you will meet the faculty and the administration, to whom we owe our success. They are the ones who have enthusiastically guided us these past years, often with great patience, so we might be better prepared to assume the many responsibilities confronting us in a few short years. Included here are the members of our Board of Education, our principals, and our teachers. Encountered next will be the section set aside for the classes, especially the seniors. Special attention is given to each individual’s accomplishment offering a clue to each one’s personality. This year, for the first time, group pictures of the Seniors are seen in this section, each photo typifying a phase of life at Geneva High. Of course, our various activities constitute an essential part of our four years and to these has been devoted a special division. Here you will discover our governing body, honors achieved, highlights in the history of our class, organizations of the school, and our fine music department. To complete a well-rounded education, discipline of the body, as well as of the mind, is necessary. Therefore our sports section deserves a prominent place in our annual. Special recognition is given to deserving individuals, with accent on our skilled teams, of which we are proud, not only for their fine records, but also for their good sportsmanship. The coaches, who mold our sports program, have earned high recognition. Don’t miss the snapshots at the end of this section, which depict the hidden lives of many Seniors, as only the candid camera can. The Seneca Saga Staff would like to pause here to thank our advisors, Mrs. Small and Mr. Epley, who have both given so much of their time unselfishly. We appreciate the efforts of our artist, Mr. Rogers. To Varden Studios we are grateful for the outstanding photography, and thanks go also to the Al-marco Printing Company. Permission for the copyright of The Halls of Ivy has been granted by Chappell Co., Inc. So, as we regretfully leave our hallow’d halls of ivy, it is the fond hope of the Class of 1957 that, by preserving our spirit and our achievements in this edition, the echo of our footsteps may still be heard in these very halls during the years to come. 4 d ed ication For his outstanding part in guidance; for his faithful participation in class and committee meetings; for his diligence and interest, which overcame the obstacle of his teaching in another building; and for his unselfish devotion of time and energy expended in behalf of the Class of ’57, we dedicate our yearbook—The 1957 Seneca Saga—to Mr. Irving Griffee our class advisor, who for three years has directed us as we have “journeyed through our halls of ivy.” 5 board of ed ucatioii Standing—Mr. Searles, Mr. Lindemann, Mr. Houseman, Superintendent. Sitting—Mrs. Fairfax, Mr. Michaels, Mr. Ryan, Mr. Odell, President. W. Lynn Houseman Superintendent of Schools The public school system in Geneva owes a great deal to the accomplishments of its Board of Education. The Board, with its numerous projects, guides and encourages our education beginning with kindergarten on through graduation from high school. The entire community will benefit from its two new elaborate school buildings completed this year. In February of this year, the Board was grieved by the death of one of its very active members, Mr. James M. Ryan. A Board member since 1943, his services to the Geneva public schools were of lasting value. Elected to succeed him on the Board was Mr. Frederick M. Toole, a local attorney. The retirement of the Superintendent of Public Schools, Mr. W. Lynn Houseman, was announced after forty-nine years of outstanding service in the field of education. For thirty-one years he has capably directed the local public school system and has also received recognition throughout the state. A native of Oneida, Mr. Houseman attended the local schools there. In 1908 he was graduated from Colgate with a B.S. degree and received a M.A. degree from Columbia in 1921. His graduate work was done at Cornell, New York, and Syracuse Universities. He received the distinction of being elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Geneva High owes much to his leadership in education. It is with regret that we bid him farewell, but we wish him a well-deserved and happy retirement. otir principals One of the chief characteristics of the ivy which you have chosen as the principal part of the theme of your beautiful annual is its adaptability when put in a changed environment and its tenacity in achieving its goal. I can think of no two characteristics which the members of the Class of 1957 will need more intensively in the years to come. Do not be reactionary. Be flexible and open minded, but once having put your roots in and set your goal, drive toward it with all the tenacity of purpose you can muster. Do this and I know that we will always be proud of our alumni of the Class of 1957. Principal Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of ’57. As you leave our halls of ivy may the afterglow reflect your efforts of the past four years. 9 administration English Mr. Grammar, M.A. Mr. Hamlin, B.A. Miss McCherry, B.S. Miss White, A.B. This year, under the capable leadership of Bob Enlow and his executive staff, Student Council has assumed a strong lead in regulating the affairs of the school. Among its achievements were the Welcome Dance for freshmen, a Host and Hostess information service, the annual successful Stunt Night to support our war orphan in Korea, Senior Day, a uniform rate for bus transportation to out-of-town games to encourage attendance, the distribution of General Organization tickets, honor study halls for seniors, and the installation of a jukebox in the little gym for the whole school to enjoy. Student Court is a branch of our government which functions under Student Council. This year a lack of interest was displayed by the student body in the election of associate judges. On a trial basis Council elected a court from its members. The future of the Student Court lies in the hands of the students. This training in self-rule is an indispensable part of our education, necessary in preparing us for our future roles as responsible, alert citizens. Through self-government we, the student body, can attain a lasting unity. Student government is a valued tradition at Geneva High. Through the Council we make our own laws and are responsible for upholding them. Our Council, which encourages every student to take a vigorous interest in its operation, is influential in many aspects of life at Geneva High School. Every homeroom is represented by a delegate, and every class has its own members at large. Both the recommendations and complaints of the student body are.laid before Council by these representatives. ADVISORS—Back Row—Mr. McCann, Mr. Wucr-tenbergcr, Mr. Smith. It gives recognition to those who have most nearly attained a true education, resulting in a well-rounded personality. These are the students, who in the opinion of the Faculty, have consistently maintained high standards of Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership. The Geneva High School chapter was chartered in 1938. Membership in this organization is limited to fifteen per cent of the senior class. In the junior year five per cent are inducted, with the remaining ten per cent entering in the fall and spring of the next year. Although chiefly an honor group, the Society schedules several regular activities. Having originated the annual homeroom Christmas decoration contest, they continue to display a tree in the main hall. After each induction they sponsor a tea to welcome new members, and every spring a breakfast is held. All these activities are under the guidance of the chairman of advisors, Miss Helen Maney. To most students in Geneva High the desire for membership in the National Honor Society serves as an incentive to be active in school affairs and to maintain a high scholastic record. class awards Mr. Wuertenberger; G. About eighty couples danced to the music of the Checkmates on that special night, April 14, 1956, entitled “Over the Rainbow.” Credit should be given to the different committee members who worked hard under the co-chairmen, Fay Fairfax and Jay FitzGerald, to make this a festive evening. North Street gym was transformed into a gala ballroom with streamers representing all the shades of the rainbow. A colorful rainbow formed an arch over the entrance, and a larger one descended to the center of the floor to spotlight the traditional pot of gold and the throne. Chosen by the Junior boys to reign as Queen was Kathy Thomas with Dorene Searles and Carol Rauworth as attendants. Our royalty formed a stunning court. Queen—K. Thomas Attendants—C. Rauworth, D. All the guests were thoroughly refreshed by the cool atmosphere prevailing in the North Street gym. Under the co-chairmanship of Lynda Smith and Dick Bruno the committees successfully carried out their duties to provide a perfect evening. To follow through the cool motif the decorations featured emerald crepe paper accented with sparkling green musical instruments and an avalanche of green balloons. Even the refreshments and the cleverly designed tablecloths were in harmony with the theme. The evening Hew by as we danced to the music of the Checkmates. The tempo quickened when we learned the name of the queen, Lynda Smith, who radiated the spirit of the Senior Class as she was crowned by our Class President Dave Gebara. Chosen to be her attendants were Donna McLellan and Martha Rice. Though our Senior Ball has slipped into the past its pleasant memories linger, for it was certainly one of the highlights of our four years in Geneva High School. The Senior Class will long remember its Senior Play, “A Double Barrelled Detective” by Mark Twain. It was presented to a crowded auditorium on December 15th, and declared by all to be a success. This play was written to satirize the melodramatic detective fiction of the 1800’s. Arthur Stillman, the human bloodhound, is sent by his mother to avenge the murder of his father. Eventually he discovers that he is prosecuting an innocent victim. Meanwhile Fetlock Jones and Sadie, the waitress, plan the destruction of his greedy employer Flint Buckner. When the infallible Sherlock Holmes appears, he mistakenly accuses Sammy, the young brother of Rosemary Hillyer who owns the hotel. Once Archy enters the investigation, the suspenseful and humorous events, flavored with the supporting cast, unfold a fascinating plot. We are grateful to the director Mr. William Grammar, his student director Dave Elliot and the prompter Lynda Smith, who all worked so hard to prepare us for opening night. The expert work done by the stage crew and the fine cooperation of the various committees also helped to make this occasion a memorable and profitable evening. Bach Row—L. Harrold (Ham Sandwich), J. Year after year Varsity Chorus, Girls' Chorus and Boys’ Chorus have proved the skill of Mr. Brown and the remarkable talent of Geneva High students. One of the best known sections of the music department is the Band. It plays for assemblies, and accompanied by the majorettes performs at football and basketball games. Local parades are enlivened by the strains of our school band. The Jazz Orchestra entertains at assemblies and fund-raising projects such as Talent Night and the class plays. Extra-curricular groups such as Harmonettes, Junior and Senior Chordettes, and Fresh-ettes are not only well known in school but also in the community where they sing for many local clubs. Often they accompany the Barbershoppers to hospitals and sanitariums where they provide excellent entertainment for the patients. This year the music department will stage the operetta, “Carousel,” which will replace the Junior-Senior Play, and the Spring Concert. Since this will be the biggest project ever undertaken by the combined music and dramatics departments, a great deal of work will be required by the three classes. Varied experience is offered through the music department. Student direction especially, helps those interested in continuing their music upon graduating. We at Geneva High take pride in the accomplishments of our musical department. varsity chorus Bach Row—R. Zaso. C. Updike, P. Blum, J. Polansky. G. Schick, S. Gillespie, M. Currie, R. Murray, M. In the last few years, however, there seems to have been a lack of trained musicians in the high school. Therefore this year's band is one of the smallest G.H.S. has ever had. Even though the band has decreased in size, it has upheld its tradition of performing at the football and basketball games. Along with the majorettes it has put on some fine half-time shows. It has also taken part in the opening formalities of assembly programs. In order to increase membership and to get students interested in learning to play instruments both Mr. Brown and Mr. Robert Bardeen, the music instructor in the junior high school, have gone into the grade schools to develop musicians. Having worked hard on these young musicians, Mr. Bardeen now has a large well-trained Junior High School Band. The music department is looking forward to the time when the members of this group will be in high school and once more Geneva High will be able to say that it has one of the best high school bands in the state. The Panthers were lacking in depth in many of the key positions, and many underclassmen were called upon to fill the gaps. Captain Gene Guerrie and Carl Christensen were selected for the first squad on the All-Conference Team. Because many underclassmen were able to play this year and gain valuable experience, Geneva High is looking forward to a brighter future in football. Back Row—Mr. Corcoran, Coach; G. Leonard, R. Its record is one of the finest Geneva High School has had in a long time. The team, led by Captain Gene Guerrie, finished second to Waterloo in the Wayne-Finger Lakes League. Geneva High ended the season tied with Canandaigua Academy for the right to represent the League in the Section V basketball tournament. In a play-off game at Romulus, G.H.S. lost to the powerful Canandaigua squad. The mainstays on the team this year were seniors, and Coach Spader will have a big rebuilding job in store for him next year. track Geneva High experienced a mediocre season in track winning only two meets. The team placed fifth in the Kiwanis Relays and second in the Finger Lakes Championships. Although the team’s record was not good several boys went on to win Sectional berths. The first sectional triumph in the history of the school was attained last season in whirlwind style. With hard-fought wins over three Rochester schools Coach Spader’s Panthers came home with our first A A Sectional trophy. Geneva High has won first place in the Finger Lakes League for the last two years, and a veteran team is returning. With the graduation of strong-armed hurlers, Tony Bonavia and Gene Guerrie, and hard-hitting John Acquilano, Geneva High will be closing out a golden era in baseball. Bach Row—W. Hcit, R. Donahue, J. Its record of twenty-two straight wins through the 1956 season is a remarkable accomplishment for Coach Moore and his boys. Jim Cook and Pete Kirby, stalwarts of the team, won spots on the four-man Finger Lakes Sectional Team, which won the Section Five Golf Tournament at Rochester for the third successive year. Although the nucleus of the team consisted of seniors, a few underclassmen played to insure G.H.S. of more winning seasons. Left to Right—R. Young. P. Kirby, J. Cook. J. FitzGerald. G. Participation in the various sports throughout the year helps build character as well as develop the ability to get along with others. This year Mis. Whiting and Miss Lang have worked hard to make the girls’ athletic program a success. Aside from these benefits and the fun found in competition, the girls have, through the point system, a goal toward which they work. This arrangement has been set up to stimulate interest and intensify competition. The more active a girl is in intramurals, the more points she accumulates. Upon earning four hundred points she is awarded numerals and is eligible for membership in Leaders’ Club, a prominent group in school. She can achieve her chenille “G,” a significant award, when six hundred points have been built up. Few girls reach the summit in the point system, a gold bar which requires one thousand points. At the annual Senior Assembly the senior girl, who has displayed all the characteristics of an outstanding athlete, receives a trophy in recognition of her accomplishment. Throughout the year there are about nine sports in progress. In the fall everyone either plays speedball or swims; basketball, bowling and volleyball go on during the winter months, and in the fresh air of spring there is a choice of tennis, golf, softball and track. Teams are organized to attend the play-days, held at surrounding schools and often here at Geneva High. Almost every girl at some time during her four years enjoys the benefits of athletic participation. It is, therefore, every girl’s responsibility to encourage and to take part in this program in order to maintain its pre-eminent position in the G.H.S. curriculum. 87 Miss Lang, Mrs. Whiting, Mrs. VanDcrveer. girls coaches _ m Bach Row—L.
