During the past years Miss VanNortwick has willingly devoted a great part of her time to the growth and progress of our school. We consider it an honor and a privilege to have been under the supervision of such a splendid woman, who has won our admiration and respect. 4 3 n r t iu o r b In order to preserve the fond and happy memories of our high school career, the Seneca Saga Staff presents Volume 32 of the Seneca Saga for your enjoyment. Within the pages of this book you, the reader, will see us individually and read of the joining of these individuals into functioning groups, which form the backbone of G.H.S. community life. The Senior Division, you will find, tells of our class member’s accomplishments during his four years in high school. Tucked neatly away in a separate section you will find the Administration, which consists of the Board of Education, the Superintendent, the Principals, the Teachers, and the School’s Office-workers. For their gentle prods toward the right direction when we were bogged down, we thank them. Sports are very prominent elements in a well-rounded school program, so we have devoted a section to them. We are proud of our sports record, not only for our victories but for our high sportsmanship standards. Our activities, as you will see, have been numerous and varied. In this section we will re-enact the extra-curricular activities in which we have participated while at Geneva High School. Also we will review with you our moments of play and nonsense. It is at this time that we would like to thank our patient and hard-working advisors, Mr. Pfeifer and Mr. Epley. Also we wish to thank Mr. Rogers for his assistance on the layout. For excellent photography throughout the book, we have the Varden Studios to thank. We appreciate, also, the cooperation and help our printers, the Almarco Printing Company, have given us. We hope that the Class of 1956 will live on in the years to come, through the reading and re-reading of this annual. 5 A rlrrk front ©xfork nut a ntiilj ua also, IBljn’k turnrk to grltittg knomlrkgr long ago. 2?ot onr murk ayokr fir tttorr than maa k’s nrrk; Auk tljat mao aaik in fullrat rcuerrnrr Auk abort ank quirk ank full of high gook arnor. They undertook the selling of a bond issue for the two new schools in the amount of $2,550,000 at the very low rate of 2.25%. This year also saw the awarding of contracts and the beginning of construction of the Geneva Junior High School and the West Street Elementary School. These ultramodern schools, when finished, will provide approximately 1600 pupils with classroom facilities. Mr. Houseman, Mrs. Fairfax, Dr. Odell, Mr. Michaels, Mr. Searles, Mr. Lindemann. The School of Education, at Cornell Uni- versity has co-operated with the Board in the inauguration of a training program for the prospective staff of the Junior High School. The Board also has had membership in four sessions of the New York State School Board Institute at Syracuse University. An extensive study of the financial needs of the School District for the immediate future has seen the completion of this year’s work. I have always said that each class lingers in my memory in terms of some quality which characterizes the young men and women who, together, make up that indefinable immeasurable something called a “class.” The word for the Class of ’56 is “Effervescent.” I’ve never had a class that was bubbling over all the time like ’56. And I’m confident that as maturity settles its cloak of dignity and purpose over all of you, the energy that now just bubbles away will become the ocean that energizes a force for leadership in this great country of ours. My best wishes to you all. S. B. WUERTENBERGER. Congratulations and the best of everything to you. May the four years spent within the walls of this temple of learning be appreciated thru the years. ARTHUR J. McCANN. May I offer to all members of the Class of 1956 sincere congratulations and best wishes for continued success during the remainder of the school year and in the future. ______________ W. We pattern our Council after our United States’ Constitution as to the idea of three branches of government; executive, judicial, and legislative. The Executive Department is made up of a President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and a Treasurer. To help advise these officers, the Principal selects members of the faculty to attend each meeting. The Judicial Department consists of a Student Court, which works jointly with a well-organized monitor system to interpret and enforce the rules and regulations of the school. (Cnuttril ©ffirrrB R. They consist of a Welcome Dance for incoming freshmen, an annual Stunt Night for the support of our Korean War Orphan, exchange visits and assemblies to help promote better relationships between schools, a Host and Hostess Information Service, and Senior Day. Ryaet- In 1944 the Geneva Rotary Club set aside a fund to sponsor each year an exhibit of the work of all the students in practical arts classes. This exhibit of work was to take place late in May of each school year. The purposes of the Rotary Exhibit are to give recognition to all students in the Industrial Arts, Vocational, and Art departments of Junior and Senior High School; to award prizes to the outstanding students in these departments; to stimulate greater interest in these departments; and to promote better craftsmanship in the construction of projects. The exhibit has stimulated better craftsmanship on the part of students. It has developed in the students an appreciation for design, beauty, and an understanding of good quality in the creation of useful articles for the home. In 1952 the Hovey award was added to the program for outstanding students in Art and Industrial Arts. In order to qualify for the awards, students must demonstrate growth in the following: good citizenship, the ability to work with others, leadership abilities, proficiency in hand skills, a growing interest in the problems of industry and arts. This year on February 11 the Class of Fifty-six presented the “Mardi Gras.” The ball was held at North Street School and the gym was intricately decorated with brilliant red, blue, gold, and white streamers which were caught in the center by a gay cluster of balloons. Approximately 75 couples danced dreamily to the sentimental music of the Checkmates. The highlight of the evening came when Gene Freid crowned Patricia Bennett Queen of the Mardi Gras. Attendants were Helen Cook and Judith Northridge. The Senior Ball will always live in the memories of those who attended. Our first year as upperclassmen was very interesting and successful. It was highlighted by the presentation of our Junior Prom, “So This Is Heaven.” Celestial decorations and music by Bob Hunt’s Orchestra provided the background for the evening’s entertainment. Going along with the theme, couples were met at the door by Susan Bennett and Susan Inscho, who were dressed as angels. The Junior boys elected Jane Kraus as Queen and she was crowned by our class president, Bob Bennett. The attendants were Pat Bennett and Maureen Johnson. We made a big success of our first project as a class because we all worked together. Co-operation like this makes us proud to be members of the class of ’56. 57 wy! ht.b— it —nr' W Kc - — ,r r.i I Back Row—G. Freid, N. Inscho, H. Cukell, J. Clarke, E. Barrett, B. Stoodley, R. Another great success was chalked up to the Class of 1956, when an auditorium filled with Genevans witnessed “Time Out For Ginger” on December 3, 1955. Giving their best to their roles, members of the cast turned out a polished show of comedy under the capable direction of William Grammar, director, and Nancy Inscho, Student Director. The delighted audience saw Jerry Johnson as the perplexed father and Beverly Boyd as the effervescent Ginger. Lending able support to the production were Sally as the maid, Nancy Rishel as mother, Diane Phillips as Joan, Palma Bruni as Jcannie, Gene Freid as Ed Davis, Barth Engert as Tommy Green, Ronald DeBacco as Mr. Wilson, and Bob Northrop as Ed Hoffman. foe )«,-. 4B5J2 M T Weaker 'ftfS SSs ? . c, “■ S -'-C -;-- tS?- o,, , Bacfc Row___B. It is easy to see that music in Geneva High School is a beloved institution flowing throughout the school life and future life of our graduates. This indispensable organization is the result of the capable direction of Mr. Brown, head of the music department of the Geneva Public School System. Because of his enthusiasm, our music department has been termed “a great success” in whatever it attempts. Uaraitg (Cljorua (Sirin’ (El? n run Back Row—L. Wyatt, B. Witter, D. Abbott, M. Otis, M.
