He has served our country well in time of war. Later he entered the field of educating young Americans. He has helped us much with his advice in home room and out on the sports field. He is a person to be admired and, therefore, we are proud to dedicate our Seneca Saga to Mr. Robert Smith. foreword In preparing Volume 31 of the Seneca Saga, the members of the Class of 1955 have tried to capture, for our own recollection and for whoever else might be interested, some of the experiences, ideas, friendships, and good times we have shared during the past four years. Through our organizations, games, discussions, and classes, many of which are shown on the following pages, we have developed individual tastes and traits. Lasting friendships have been formed. We have learned to work together. Leaders have been discovered and acclaimed. Athletics have taught us good sportsmanship, and in our classes we finally began to realize that we didn’t know ALL the answers! But behind everything we have learned and done were the never-ending efforts of our wonderful teachers, coaches, and advisers. Besides working patiently with us in the class room, they have offered understanding aid and suggestions outside the class room which have been greatly appreciated. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts! Special Acknowledgments This Annual, which will be to many a cherished token of GHS, could never have been published without the unceasing work of its chief adviser, Miss Katharine White. She has contributed generously her time and energy and we wish to express our sincere gratitude to her. We also wish to thank our other advisers, Mr. Epley and Dr. Cuony, who aided us in many ways. The interest of our photographers, the Varden Studios of Rochester, and the fine work of the Almarco Printing Company have been gratefully received. 5 The Editor. = dministration board of education Instruction Committee — Dr. Theodore T. NEW SCHOOLS FOR GENEVA—Two one-story school buildings, of simple, but modern design, will open their doors to Geneva’s children at the beginning of the new school year in September, 1956. Planned to meet educational needs for the present and foreseeable future, these buildings provide a pleasing environment where pupil safety and health are important considerations. Each building is located on a relatively large plot. The architect is utilizing natural light through large areas of glass. Exteriors are of brick, with stone trim for contrast. The elementary school with facilities for over 700 pupils is located on West Street, facing east. Separate play areas are provided for different age groups. A multi-purpose cafeteria-auditorium and a gymnasium provide modern facilities for school and community use. The new junior high school is located on West North Street. While a one-story building, it is on three levels to conform to the contour of the land. With facilities for 700 pupils, it includes a cafeteria to serve 260 at one sitting. Adequate space provisions are made for shops, homemaking, library, nature museum, student activities, general science, music, rifle range, and a gymnasium which will serve the community as well as the school. The new schools are the result of cooperative planning by the architect, John C. Ehrlich, the staff, the Board of Education, and specialists in the New York State Education Department. In short, Geneva now has a complete modern school plant which should meet present and future needs adequately insofar as may be predicted with assurance. 6 For your leadership in maintaining the traditional high standing of Geneva High School in scholarship and in student activities, I thank the members of the Class of 1955. For success in whatever worthy ventures you may undertake in the future, I extend best wishes. Good luck to each and everyone. W. Lynn Houseman Superintendent of Schools. To the Class of ’55— May you always be the financial wizards you were during your Senior year. Good luck and best wishes. Arthur J. McCann. The best that I could hope or wish for the members of the Class of 1955 would be that your goals and objectives remain as clear and high as they have been during the four years with us and that with all the seriousness of purpose that the world will require in the years that come, you will never lose your cheerful, optimistic approach to life. The Student Council consists of: president; vice-president; recording secretary; corresponding secretary; treasurer; ten student representatives at large, elected from each class (four Seniors, three Juniors, two Sophomores, and one Freshman); five members of the faculty designated by the Principal; and representatives from each homeroom. Class presidents and a reporter from the school newspaper may also attend the meetings, but have no vote. Officers of Student Secre«ary; m Rvder Vice-President; L. E- .. _ student Council Class Representative. - Fr0 t Senior Cass Representatives nt cR The Student Council has always been a very active and important part of Geneva High School, but this year, under the outstanding leadership of Ernie Schoen-Rene and his executive committee, it has been exceptionally successful. One of the first accomplishments of the Student Council was the revision of its constitution into a very usable and understandable document. Another fine achievement this year was the organization of a Student Court, which had been approved in the preceding year. Co-ordinating the monitor system and the court itself, the Council provided for excellent enforcement of school rules. The annual Stunt Night was, as always, a big success. More tickets than ever before were sold, insuring plenty of food and clothing to the school’s Korean War orphan. These and many others compile a worthy record for the 1954-55 Student Council, one of the best ever! Advisers of Student touncn Maney. M. Moschiano. Freshman r Abbott. 35 Freshman Class Officers C. Under the capable direction of Mr. Godfrey Brown, each musical group provides excellent entertainment for the student body and the community and fine educational experiences for its members. The three choral groups, Varsity Chorus, Girls’ Chorus, and Boys’ Chorus, perform at concerts, assembly programs, and community functions throughout the year. They offer many exceptional selections which are always enthusiastically received. This year the Varsity Chorus undertook the difficult but rewarding task of preparing and presenting an operetta. “Down in the Valley” was a tremendous success. One of the indispensable sections of the Music Department is the band, which plays at most of Geneva High’s assemblies, athletic events, and concerts as well as for local concerts and parades. Another able and busy group is the orchestra, playing for many school plays, dances, and exchange assemblies. The orchestra claims many future conductors and musicians. The Chordettes, Harmonettes, Melodettes, Freshettes, P. G. Quartet, and Boys’ Quartet round out the Music Department. They provide special opportunity to students with exceptional voices. Their renditions of classical and popular pieces in close harmony are favorites in the school. All the music groups are well known for their professional style and for the fine quality of their presentations. varsity chorus Bock Roxv: R. Morison, R. Peterson. A. Farlo. M. Principio, K.
