Seneca Saga 1954 ALMA MATER Far above the old lake’s foaming Reared against the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater Stands Geneva High. Chorus Raise the chorus, speed it onward, Shout the battle cry, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Hail, Geneva High! Here both lessons and athletics We have learned for years; Anything from Greek to football Holds for us no fears. Just a few year’s at the longest Till we say goodbye, And we leave our school forever, Dear Geneva High. The Class of 1954 of GENEVA HIGH SCHOOL Geneva, New York presents VOLUME 30 of the SENECA Photograph—Courtesy of Colleges of the Seneca. Far above the old lake’s foaming Stands Geneva High. 4 In recognition of the service which he has given to Geneva High School and in recognition of the spirit in which he has served the students of the Geneva schools, the Class of 1954 is indeed proud to dedicate this year’s Seneca Saga to a true friend, Mr. Hall. FOR EWORD The Seneca Saga Staff presents herewith, for your approval and enjoyment, Volume 30 of the Seneca Saga. The editors have tried to show what this class has done, so that when you have seen and read the Seneca Saga, you will know something about our class, more than the fact that it graduated in 1954. In the Senior Division, you will see each one of us, and read about some of our major activities and accomplishments. In the Administration section, you will see our Board of Education, the Superintendent and Principals and Teachers who have given us untiringly of their time and advice. Cowper said, “Variety is the spice of life.” We sincerely believe this, as you will see when you enter our Activities section, which shows us, along with our friends of the other classes, participating in many extra-curricular activities, which have certainly added zest and enjoyment to our four years in high school. We hope you will enjoy our Sports section, where again, variety is present. We think we have an admirable sports record, not only because of our well-stocked trophy cases, but also because of our many sportsmanship awards. Of course, every group must have a leader, and full measure of honor and credit should and does go to our many coaches and advisers. In the Features section, you will see us in some of our lighter moments, as we attended the Junior Prom and the Senior Play, and many of the other “extras” which make the school experience so enjoyable. Also, toward the end, we have included a strictly “informal” section, which shows us as we look, act, and play with no preparation for a photographer. The Seneca Saga Staff extends thanks to all who helped in the preparation of this book. The committees worked hard to prepare schedule and copy. The advisers, Miss Katharine White, Mr. Epley and Mr. Cuony, aided us in many ways. We wish to thank Mr. Bridwell for his fine picture of Geneva, and Mr. Rogers for his help. The Varden Studios of Rochester gave us excellent photographs. We appreciate also the great amount of help our printers, the Almarco Printing Company, have given us. We hope you will enjoy the many memories this book will bring to you through the years to come. 6 The Editor. All I could wish for you, the Class of ’54, would be that your future roles in community and national citizenship will be taken in a forthright and interested manner as those in school citizenship. The best of the future for you. SPURGEON B. WUERTENBERGER, Principal. To the Class of ’54: May you always have the pep, push, and persuasion that you have exhibited during your high school career. Lyon, Treasurer; 13. Cocola, Recording Secretary; M. Sgro, Vice-President; C. Searles, Corresponding Secretary. Our student government, which was introduced into Geneva High School some twenty years ago, has so developed that today it offers real civic education. A very liberal constitution allows student responsibility for, and participation in, many school programs and encourages free expression of opinion. It is a challenge to the students of Geneva High School to support this student government. SENIOR COUNCIL MEMBERS (Back Row) J. Abraham, E. Deuel, N. Massa, D. Trunzo, A. Fairbanks, R. Brown. The Student Council plays an important part in student life and interest in it should be encouraged by every possible means. This year’s Student Council, under the leadership of Francis Felice, deserves commendation for the excellent record it has compiled. These accomplishments have made our Student Council this year: an organized monitor patrol, a host and hostess information booth, special assemblies, Senior Day, Welcome Dance, Stunt Nite, Exchange Trips and care of a Korean War orphan. A comedy entitled “The Little Dog Laughed” was chosen and it pi’oved to be a big success. A cast of 15 performed under the direction of Mr. Grammar, assisted by Donna Taylor. Richard Brown, who took the role of the father, was the only member of the cast who had taken part in previous dramatics. Barbara DeJohn did an excellent job as the mother and Pat Strine made the perfect son! Maxine Baroody handled the lead role of a college student majoring in psychology, and Bruce Knowlton aided the romance angle, while Ruth Legg and George Abraham kept the humor at its best. One of the best parts in the play was the tea scene. Ruth Bonesteel, Sue Burkart, Joan Dwyer, Edith Firoozi and Nancy Lyon played the roles of the “ladies of fashion,” upon whom Maxine did an excellent job of “psychoanalyzing.” The cast was completed in fine style by Jane Massey, Sue Bartlett and Anthony Marino. By the reaction of the full-house audience, everyone could tell that the Class of ’54 had added another success to its well-filled calendar of successes. (Back Row) E. Firoozi, J. Massey, A. The Ball was held at North Street School on Saturday, January 30, 1954. Music was by Johnny Hartzog, and his orchestra from Rochester. Great preparation went into making this wonderful event a success. There were committees for tickets, chaperones, and decorations. The decoration committee’s assignment was the most difficult, but the committee worked very hard to decorate successfully. The colors used for decorations were light blue, dark blue, and gray. The ceiling was dark blue to represent the sky and the sides were decorated alternately with the three colors. Red and yellow spotlights were placed above the ceiling and shone down through the roof of decorations. The Queen’s throne was covered with red velvet on which was placed shiny little stars. Three wide steps led up to the throne to represent a stairway to the stars. The backdrop was blue with angel hair Crowning of the Queen and stars describing the sky. Blue, red, yel- low, green and white revolving spotlights 51 cast a lovely glow on this scene. MOONLIGHT CRUISE Our Junior Year was a busy, productive, and intensely interesting one with our Junior Prom as the greatest event of the year. On April 17, 1953, with hammer, nails, and good old elbow grease we transformed North Street School Gym into a rainbow of color. The mood was set by Robert Hunt and his Orchestra, the attractive throne and the soft and dreamy colors of pink, light green, and dark green. The girls no longer wore their sisters’ formals, but had new and beautiful ones purposely bought for this special event. The boys at this time also looked their best, wearing white dinner jackets. To add to the excitement, we received our class rings that same day. We hoped the evening would never end, but the highlight came, the crowning of the queen. We crowned our queen, Mary Sgro, and named her attendants Beverly Cocola and Maxine Baroody. (Standing) J. Massey, D. McGuigan, S. Burkhart, J. Kraus, C. Antinelli, J. Bennett, J. Wethey, M. Hegel, H. LaFaro, J. McLellan, L. Rosenbloom, S. Bartlett, K. McCaig. (Seated) R. Gilbert, A. McIntosh, M. Sgro, D. Taylor, J. Whitaker, J. Kenny. USHERS The first opportunity for the class of 1954 to show some of its talent was in the Junior-Senior Plays presented by the classes of ’53 and ’54. The plays, “The Valiant,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “A Young Man’s Fancy,” were presented in a professionally acted manner. “The Valiant,” the contribution of the Senior Class of ’53, depicted the feelings of a man of unknown identity about to receive the “supreme penalty” for the crime he committed. The players were Ronald Goldstone, Michael Kirby, John Farnsworth, Patricia Adams, James Lord, and Bruce Oughterson. The director of the entire production was Mr. William Grammar with student assistance from Clifford Hand, Madeleine Cook, Marilyn Nellis, George Abraham, and Christine Searles. There are over 300 boys and girls enrolled in musical activities offered by the school. Among the musical classes are the G.H.S. Band, of which we are justly proud; the varsity chorus, which has produced many fine vocalists; and the jazz orchestra, which offers many fine renditions of “the tops in pops.” We are also proud of our fine girls’ and popular boys’ choruses. Other outstanding musical groups, although they are termed extra-curricular, are the “Chordettes,” the boys’ quartet, and for those with exceptional ability we have the All-State Chorus and All-State Band. These organizations give our youth FRESHMAN CHORUS (Back Row) J. Lynn, M. Castleman, R. Jensen, D. Soper, T. Bonavia, N. Faido, R. Mearns, C. Bruzee, J. Tate, R. Bennett, D. Fryer, J. Williams, L.
