1953 of tfettOMZ School tfateva. Tteev tyonA presents Volume Twenty-nine of the Zcacca Soya Far above the old lake's foaming Reared against the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater Stands Geneva High. Chorus Raise the chorus, speed it onward. Shout the battle cry, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Hail, Geneva High! Here both lessons and athletics We have learned for years; Anything from Greek to football Holds for us no fears. Just a few years at the longest Till we say goodbye. And we leave our school forever. 'po'tetvo'uC Centuries ago man drew simple pictures with a stick to record his doings. Years ago the Indian left the legends of his life. This year we of the Senior Class have compiled our history, using tlie tools of today. Our “Seneca Saga” is the story of a group of one hundred thirty-six who have gone to classes and to games, to plays and dances. We have a varied history to relate through the pictures which follow. Our newspaper throughout the year has carried the stories of the groups who appear in pictures. This year we have a new section in which we have tried to give in pictures a school day as lived by the seniors. Mr. Adams, the photographer, went from class to class taking pictures of us in our usual places from 8:45 to 2:30. We hope you will find that it recalls memories. We know that the other pictures will. We have tried to give you a complete picture of the doings of this year of the Class of ’53. We hope you like what the committees have assembled. The theme of this year’s “Seneca Saga” is the story of our class, the saga of our four years in school. We thank Alice Whiting for her drawings which express so well the story of the Indians who also learned and played games in this region. As we leave Geneva High School to begin our careers there are some others who are also leaving. They are not students but rather the teachers who are ending their teaching careers. These arc the people whom we have come to know as friends always ready with a helping hand. The Class of ’53 wishes to salute these teachers and thank them for a job well done. As editor of the “Seneca Saga” and on behalf of the class I wish to thank Miss White for her assistance. As chief adviser, she has given unselfishly of her time and energy to make the annual a success. 1 should also like to thank our other two advisers—Mr. Cuony, adviser of Senior Notes and Mr. Epley, adviser to the Business Stall', who have done a splendid job. QUEEN AND ATTENDANTS GRAND MARCH — 16 — Sections Long moons ago, some Indians started out on a hunting trip far front their village. They travelled for many suns, and went to many strange places, seeking game. Sometimes they followed footprints, but often found they had to use their own cunning to trap the animals. All during the trip they looked forward to returning home with the venison and bear meat, and when at last the group filed among the tepees, they were received with great ceremony. The whole, village rejoiced, for they' had done well, and there was meat to carry them through the long winter months. Many moons ago, some Freshmen started out on an adventure. For four years they wandered near and far, covering many territories. There were teachers to guide them, and they were quick to learn when left to their own judgment. They worked hard in their hunt for knowledge, and at last Graduation came. Now it was time to step ahead, into the bright future for which they had so carefully planned. These Chiefs met, elected a head War Chief, and made laws for the tribe. In G.H.S., each homeroom elects a representative for Student Council. There rules and plans for the whole school are made. All Indians were taught from childhood to be brave, and to do things for themselves. The brave warriors arid chiefs in a tribe were examples for the young to follow. A courageous deed was often rewarded by a feather or a title. Those in high school who have done well in their school work and sports may belong to Leaders Club, and others receive rewards for what they have produced at the Rotary Art Exhibit. The young braves learned to grow food by working with their fathers, scratching the ground with stone hoes and planting corn, beans, and squash. The girls helped their mothers cook food over open fires and sew skins. In this modern age, there are many opportunities for girls and boys to prepare for the future, through F.F.A., and F.H.A. The tear cries, the chants, and the beating of the drums provided music for the Indians. We go along our way, singing, playing, working. Hilton ................Secretary H. Brooks.Corresponding Secretary G. Christensen Treasurer The Student Council of our school is a very active group with representatives from all four classes. They take part in many activities and contribute much to making our school an interesting place. Our Council is also affil-ated with the county group. Two of our officers are officers in the Student Council of Ontario County Organization. We feel that our council is a good example of the democratic way of government. Our members are elected in home rooms. Our officers are elected. We have class representatives as well. Each homeroom representative reports the actions of the council and takes to it the suggestions from the home rooms. All members except the appointed freshman group are elected in the spring. A real campaign is conducted. Those interested in being elected start their petitions which must he signed and duly filed. Election speeches of the candidates for office are given in assembly after they have given thought to their platforms. The Common Council of Geneva lends us one of their voting machines. The meetings of the General Council and of the Executive Committee are held regularly throughout the year. The advisers are present to give us helpful suggestions when necessary. jUMORS vtf Breiuelo C. Rizzo, T. Rice, N. — 44 — SENIORS Achilles, n„ieY, E. Morocco, M. C. Nicklin, F. OU yanEselune. Our interests are more than local, for we have an exchange visit with the student council group in Canada and we have assumed the care of a Greek War Orphan for a second year. We went to Toronto in January tor a long week-end. We expect to entertain our Canadian friends in April. Our Annual Stunt Night provides some ot the money for our little Greek friend. This year pictures of the underclassmen were taken for us on our General Organization tickets. Tin profits were used to complete the amount necessary for the care of our orphan. If you had entered the biology lab any Tuesday last December, during the eighth period, you would have found much activity. Under the guidance of Mrs. Glasgow and Mis Sweeney, the members of the council were engaged in many interesting projects. Richard Mearns could he seen boring holes in giant pine cones which Romanic Her-vey donated from the loot his mother brought back from South Carolina. Pete Sarros and Gary Griffith were putting copper wire through the holes. Lynn Remind, the president of this organization, gave much thought to her task (and incidentally got all “stuck up”) spraying luminous paint on honey locust pods, a treatment which rendered them into glittering icicles. Rita Schult. Diana Darling. Joyce Christensen, and Elizabeth Emerson busily applied snow to realistic snow flakes that had been cut out ot white paper. The purpose of this activity? To supply Christmas decorations for the hospital wards at Sampson. Many Veterans had a happier Christmas because of the work done by the Junior Red Cross. After Christmas the council was engaged in other projects. A Brownie sale in February raised money to pay the freight for clothing sent to SAVE THE CHILDREN FEDERATION. Valentine favors for the hospital and the Margaret Ayre Nursing Home were made in February. In March the Junior Red Cross swung into the annual Red Cross Drive lor membership. Posters and boxes were distributed in the high school and the students made generous contributions to the Junior Red Cross. The members of the council and two Hi-Y clubs assisted in serving the opening and closing campaign dinners for the Geneva chapter of the National Red Cross. Next fall if you read the December 1953 issue of the “Junior Red Cross Journal,” you will sec a picture of your council and an article describing their work. — 47 — ota uf rfcvwicU INDUSTRIAL ARTS I Wood J. All who were able to travel had assembled to meet in council, become acquainted with their brothers and played games. There were many braves competing in the sports. All tcere in top condition as they lived a hardy outdoor life. Competition was keen. Each tried to outdo all others in the feats with bow and arrow, in racing, swimming, and playing lacrosse. Even the squaws played games on the side when they were not watching and cheering for their tribe. At last the sun returned to its home and many canoes slipped silently over the waters of the Finger Lakes, homeward bound. In tlie Finger Lakes Region of today there is keen competition. Geneva High is always out there fighting, fighting not only for victory but for sportsmanship and a clean game too. The boys practice faithfully under the guidance of the medicine men and prove that their hard work is not in vain. The girls also take an active part in sports. We play so that we may he proud of our sportsmanship, teamwork and victories as we make our way homeward after the games are over. 20o t 'Dctriua Cun laat 'tyean Ck Sfionfo — 70 — Back row—E.
