The Class of 1951 presents The Seneca Saga Vol. XXVII of Geneva High School Alma Mater Far above the old lake’s foaming Reared against the sky Proudly stands our Alma Mater Stands Geneva High. Chorus Raise the chorus, speed it onward, Shout the battle cry, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Hail, Geneva High! Here both lessons and athletics We have learned for years; Anything from Greek to football Holds for us no fears. Just a few years at the longest Till we say goodbye, And we leave our school forever, Dear Geneva High. Dedication We, the class of 1951, are proud of a competent leader, a genial friend, a beloved principal, who has gained the love and respect of all who have been associated with him. His kindness and wisdom have always influenced his friends and associates who admire his deep appreciation of the success of perseverance” and the obligation of duty.” So with fond memories of our friend and educator who has helped to enhance the prestige and efficiency of our Alma Mater, we dedicate our annual, the Seneca Saga, to 4 Louis M. Collins Vice-Principal 1921-25. Principal 1925-1950. B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, Amherst College, 1904. 5 Welcome to our New Principal Geneva High School welcomes to our midst a man of noble character, who is experienced in leadership and capable of the great responsibility entrusted to him. Through his ability to understand and influence young people, we have learned to respect and strive to fulfill his ideals for true Americanism. The Class of 1951 extends its best wishes to our new principal—Spurgeon B. Wuertenberger. K3S A year ago, when I first visited Geneva High School, I liked the pupils I saw, I liked the general attitude of school spirit which I detected, and I liked the record of scholastic and athletic achievement about which I heard. These were among the important factors which affected my decision to come to Geneva. Now, toward the end of my first year as your principal, I am happy that my expectations, based on the factors I have just mentioned, have not been disappointed. I could not have asked for a finer group of young people to be the first class I am privileged to graduate from Geneva High School. You have shown yourselves willing to accept responsibility, to profit by your mistakes, and to keep striving for bigger achievements. I am confident, without doubt, that if you are willing to take these attitudes into whatever the future holds, you will be citizens of which your Alma Mater can be rightfully proud. 6 S. B. Without Miss White’s unfailing interest and work, the task would have been impossible. We of the staff thank her sincerely. Our thanks also go to Mr. Cuony, adviser of the Senior Notes Committee, and to Mr. Epley, financial adviser. They have been most helpful. Willard Rice for her generous gift of the Baldwin concert grand piano for our high school stage. This instrument has already added immensely to our concerts and programs. We are looking forward to future performances supplemented by the use of this fine piano. Inez L. Nease. The appreciation of the High School for this magnificent addition to our music and stage facilities is twofold. We are proud to realize that we have in Mrs. Rice a patron who is interested enough in the improvement of the facilities with which we work to make such a splendid presentation. We shall accept it as a challenge to move ever onward and upward in the extension and improvement of our music program. We are humble in the realization that Mrs. Rice has expressed so much confidence in our sense of responsibility that we should be entrusted with such a valuable instrument. We accept the challenge as both a corporate challenge and as one affecting each of us individually. In behalf of the faculty and the student body, I sincerely thank Mrs. Rice. S. B. Wuertenberger. Piano presented by Mrs. C. Willard Rice in Memory of C. Willard Rice, former President of the Board of Education. 45 Boys' Double Quartet E. Jensen, D. Lunick, D. Passalacqua, D. Bruno, C. Musical assemblies in keeping with the season are part of our memories. Such presentations as Pinafore” and Blow Me Down” are added to our store of pleasure which we have had in our four years. It was fun to take part in them. It was fun to attend such excellent performances. The music groups and the National Honor Society combined at Christmas to give us carols sung around the gaily decorated Christmas tree. Between classes the groups continued the songs. We cherish the memory of a beautiful program. Girls' Chorus Back row: D. Wheaton, N. Dubbs, S. McLean, P. Adams, A. Liberatore, B. Marsden, B. VC addell, F. Fernandez, B. Marsden, L. Fowler, B. The baseball team went to the sectionals and lost only in the finals to East High of Rochester by the heartbreaking score of 3 to 1. The tennis team finished second in the league. The golf team had a 3 to 4 record. The track team also had a pretty good year, finishing with a better than average record and making a good showing in the Kiwanis Relays. This fall Butch” Cuony was blessed with many returned veterans and good material. He came up with a great football team. They had a hard luck season, dropping close ones to Hornell, Ben Franklin, and Auburn, but romped over Batavia, Wellsville, Corning Free and De Sales. In the Hornell game the team showed that old do-or-die” Geneva High spirit and almost beat a highly favored Hornell team. The cross country team did all right too. They had a very good season and showed lots of stamina. The team consisted mainly of underclassmen, and Doc” has high hopes for the coming years. When the basketball season rolled around, Doc” Bonesteel, looked forward to another bright season, and he was not disappointed. The team, blessed with the return of four out of last year’s six men and an abundance of good reserves, rolled over all their opponents, and building up a winning streak of 16 straight wins. This set them up for the semi-finals of the sectionals. The future of GHS shows bright, because of the successes of the JV team—13 games won and 5 lost—and of the freshmen team with 8 wins and 4 losses. But the basketball squad was not the only one who felt the taste of victory. The swimming team pulled the surprise of the year by beating Canandaigua 36' t to 29‘ 2. This is the first time, since the two teams have met, that Geneva has come out the victor. The wrestling team, made up mostly of inexperienced material also had a good year. They broke just about even in their matches. It has the possibilities of being a great team in the future. The success of the Rifle Club and the Bowling Team has created much interest in these sports. The program includes basketball, bowling, volleyball, tennis, ping pong, swimming, field hockey, soccer, baseball, softball, badminton, shuffleboard. Modern dancing has its place in the program. Letters are awarded for achievement. 500 points are needed for a letter with 50 points being awarded for participation in one sport. These awards are made late in the year. This varied program brings out many girls for many different sports and teams. There are many games played before the winners emerge. Picture for yourself the 30-40 girls who come out and stay out for the spring and fall program in soccer, field hockey and baseball. About the same number are interested in tennis, badminton and ping pong. The swimmers make up a smaller group. Bowling and basketball, of course, have a very heavy registration. On Fridays the boys and girls have a combined gym program. Games and dancing are enjoyed. The help given by the coaches is of great value in the years to come, for one knows how to act in all these different situations. We were very sorry to lose Mrs. Hornick this January when she resigned to teach in Penn Yan. We are glad to have Mrs. Wheeler back again for the second term. Back row: E. Buss, H. Mahoney, C.
