Chorus Raise the chorus, speed it onward. Shout the battle cry. Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Hail, Geneva Highl Here both lessons and athletics We have learned for years; Anything from Greek to football Holds for us no fears. Just a few years at the longest Till we say goodbye, And we leave our school forever, Dear Geneva High. Seneca Sada Editor and Ad visers Mr. Cuony, Mr. Epley, Shirley Essa, Miss White. Mr. Cuony Mr. Epley Shirley Essa Miss White Adviser—Senior Notes Committee Adviser—Business Committee Editor-in-chief General Adviser Dear Reader, We have tried to show in the pages of this book the big things and little things which have happened in our senior year. Thus, the gay moments of participating in the operetta or watching of the senior play may be recalled. Although you see only the pictures of the players and read the scores, the gallant efforts of the teams to play a good game live again. You recall the seniors and humorous moments of a class as well as the lasting friendships which have been created. The time has seemed short, but as always, good things pass quickly and are remembered. Sincerely, The Editor. Back row—B. Bowler, R. David, D. Carnovale,, N. Wright, M. A. Gracey, V. Gillotte, A. As a coach, he has turned out winning teams year after year, never using or teaching a dirty trick. As a man, he is well liked by those who know him. So with these few words that say so much, we dedicate our annual in the year of his retirement to 6 ames C. Loman 7 In Memoriam C. WILLARD RICE. 8 To the memory of C. Willard Rice who served the schools of Geneva as a member of the Board of Education for more than a quarter of a century. He was elected to the Board in 1911. He became President of the Board in 1913 and served as President continuously from that date until his death on September 30, 1949. During all these years he had the confidence of the community, he maintained a sound financial policy, and fostered a steady growth in the school system. His good business sense and legal ability were invaluable to the community. Under his leadership our schools made a steady growth in progressive education and today hold an enviable place among the schools of New York State. He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again. The chorus opened this year's series of the Salute to the Finger Lakes Region broadcasts by singing the BALLAD FOR AMERICANS, a musical history of the United States. The Rotary Club heard Varsity Chorus twice this year, once, singing the above-mentioned work, with a Fred Waring arrangement, GRANDMA'S THANKSGIVING, in November, and again, in December, the chorus sang its usual Christmas program. The Geneva Rotary Club makes available to the High School and the Junior School $350.00 for prizes, for students in the Industrial Arts, Vocational Machine Shop, and Art Departments. The main purpose of this exhibit is to give recognition to all students in these departments, to stimulate greater interest in the fields of Vocational Education, Industrial Arts, and Art, to promote better craftsmanship in the construction of projects, to demonstrate to the general public the type of work being carried on in these departments. Over 1800 students have participated in the program since 1944. There has been marked increase in interest and decided improvement in workmanship. 56 r ... r senior Junior Prom -1949 58 Winter Wonderland was the theme for the 1950 Senior Ball held on January 27, at the North Street School. Mr. Loman, Coach Ernie Lisi, Captain Mr. L oman Announces Retirement as Coadi At the assembly on October 7, Mr. Loman, our popular coach, dropped a bombshell when he told us ill health was forcing him to retire. To students whose eyes were filled with tears he made a few parting remarks. After praising the football team who had just defeated the powerful Batavia outfit, he paid a tribute to the assistant coaches. Just before he left the stage he urged the support of the student body of the Wellsville game, his last game as coach. Applause was so great that he returned and concluded his speech with these words: Thanks people, you don't know what that does to the cockles of my heart. I've had some very pleasant associations here with both faculty and kids. I've seen some wonderful people go out into the world and have seen some nice people coming up. If you people just follow in the footsteps of some of those who have gone ahead of you, I know we'll be proud of you, too. Thanks a lot, kids. Mr. Loman's Las! Trip as Cocich—On to Wellsville. 60 Sports 1949-50 The chief end of sport is fun. But how is this fun to be found? Certainly not in losing games to weaker opponents through lack of preparation. The fun of football comes at the moment when you realize the drudgery of endless drill has not been in vain, that the plays are working for gains and that the defense is stopping the opposition. The joy of Cross Country running comes when you meet the challenge of your opponent and you find that all those weary miles of practice have given you that extra ounce of stamina that is going to bring you across the finish line a champion. When the whistle blows for contest or practice, there is no place for shirkers on a varsity team. When a boy becomes a candidate for a team, he ceases to become a free agent and becomes the representative of his school. For such an honor, he must pay in self-sacrifice, loss of individuality, and prolonged effort. The fun and lasting satisfaction comes when he discovers that he has not paid the price in vain. We can point with pride to the success that this tradition has brought to our many activities. The boy who breaks his training obligations is an exception. But il Winning the Game was the only purpose of sports, I doubt very much that athletics would be fun or worthwhile. When you learn to play a game well, you have acquired some valuable traits that will carry over into life. The character traits one must possess in athletics are principles you must follow for success in all walks of life. One fine quality that can be developed in physical activities is to help the other fellow improve himself. Babe Ruth possessed a keen interest in boys and girls and always had time to help them. Hans Wagner took time to play with boys on the sand lots of Pittsburgh. The fellow who appreciates what 62 Football Back, row—R. David, M. Stivers, R. Tuxill, R. Truesdale, R. Polce, J. Kraus, W. He is not only great on the court or field but also in the classroom and in the eyes of the public. Ah, yes! The classroom and classroom teachers play an important role in athletics. Athletics is but a part of the training you receive in school. Your chance to compete in athletics is based upon how well you get along with others. When you take a fine attitude toward teachers, administrators, and fellow students, you build good will. You insure the active and enthusiastic support of students, teachers, and the public. Indifference in others is the most damaging thing that can happen. Frequently the cry goes up, Where is the school spirit? If this happens, the athletes and coaching staff had better take self-inventory and ask themselves. Do our actions merit the good will of those with whom we work and play? They won't respect you if you are disloyal to them, but they will be loyal to you in return for your loyalty to them. Others must know that we are willing to do more than our part to cooperate with them. The friendliness and appreciation created by courteous cooperation is of great value. Then and then only will you have a school with high morale, something without which a team will never be a winner nor win an important game. The world seeks men who know how to work with others, who will work industriously, who respect their superiors, who can master hard tasks, who know how to win and how to accept defeat, who are loyal to everyone including themselves, who are reliable, honest, and dependable. Athletic competition, rightly performed, will give you these qualities. Yes, the chief end of sport is fun, but this fun is not gained cheaply. This fun is found only when you are in love with the game, when you are willing to pay the price of long hours of practice, when you lend a helping hand to the other fellow, and when you aim at high ideals. 71 J. CROSS COUNTRY B. Fryer captured first place in the Section 5 Cross Country Championship last fall. WRESTLING Geneva High School entered its third year of interscholastic wrestling competition and came up v ith a rather well balanced team. The team won seven meets and lost three to the large Elmira schools. The high point of the season was the convincing defeat handed to Charlotte High School of Rochester. The latter team is the city champion. After this meet there was no stopping the boys and they won the rest of their meets and also came home with the Section V Championship. There were seven individual champions among the Geneva group. Wrestling is a rough body contact sport which requires a gruelling training period. It is entirely different from the professional brand of wrestling which is so popular on TV. Interscholastic wrestling requires speed and the knowledge of holds. In the Sectionals the competition is very keen since each team represents a league or county. These representative teams are the result of elimination tournaments held among the several schools in that league or county. In some cases the team in the sectionals was made up of three or four school representatives. This makes for keen competition since the very best men are at each weight.
