Soft wool delaines, all figured, In crirnsons and in brownsg And she wore Hprunella gaitersf' And a little brown basquine, And a cunning black silk apron With bows of plaided green. She had yards of lutestring ribbon On what she calls a flat - She says she wore it on her head, So I s'pose it was a hat- And black lace mitts and pinnies, And rows of bobbing curls. She was ever so much prettier Than any of us girls. But I'm sure I couldn't run and jump In a tucker or a tie, Or climb a tree or ride a wheel In crinoline-O my! So while grandma looks so pretty In that dear old miniature, I'd rather dress just as I do, And live right here, I'm sure. -Selected x r 'fir li . Our experiences were few during our iirst eight years, but our gains were many. Wesley Miller, Marjorie Affolder, Max Stucky, Jerry Parr, Mary Jones, Nadean Manning, Kenneth Doherty, Eugene Schindler, and Connie Craig joined us to help make up our present class. As freshmen, we entered the high school assembly on September 2, 1946, for the first time. Here we were assigned the back section of seats. After school had been in session for a Week or more, we elected our class sponsor, Phyllis Jackson fLautzenheiserj, and our officers: president, Beverly Parr: vice president, Joe Potter, secretary, Jeannine Reasoner: treasurer, Wesley Miller: and news reporter, Vernon Nevil. We also chose our motto, Ever Upward, Ever Onward, our colors, red and white, and our fiower, American Beauty rose. At the beginning of this year, we found in our midst the new students, Jeannine and John Reasoner, but some of our old classmates were missing. We enjoyed a hayride in September out to Melvena Burry's and another hayride in April, out to Wesley Miller's. In April we participated in the all-school festival. Beverly Parr and Jeannine Reas- oner were elected by our class to serve as attendants to the senior queen. We all made a grand rush for seats on September 3, 1947, for this year we were not bashfulg we were sophomores. We held a class meeting early in the year and elected of- ficers as follows: president, Jerry Rockeyg vice president, Howard Booherg secretary, Carmania Fields, and treasurer, Wesley Miller. During the year we welcomed Jerry Rockey, Alice Myers, and Christine Redford. We said farewell to Melvena Burry, Beatrice Mc,CroSky, and Alice Myers. We again enjoyed a hayride out at Wesley Miller's in September and in April we had a party in the high school gym. Again Beverly Parr and Jeannine Reasoner were chosen by the class to attend the senior queen in the spring all-school festival. We entered the assembly for the third year as beaming juniors. Earline Bollenbach- er, a new student, joined our class. Since our sponsor, Mrs. Lautzenheiser, did not re- turn, we were stranded without a sponsor, Mr. Hunt called us together and we elected Miss Blanche Aspy as our sponsor. During the year we received our class rings, sold Christmas cards, sponsored Nancy Lee and the Hilltoppersj' took a trip to Indianapolis and invited the seniors as our guests. In March we presented the class play Home Came Hattie. On September 6, 1949, we came walking through the assembly doors as proud sen- iors. Miss Aspy, our sponsor, called a class meeting in which we elected the following officers: president, Merlin Bixlerg vice president, Jerry Parr, secretary, Christine Red- ford, and treasurer, Wesley Miller. We all enjoyed a hayride out to Bill Armstrongs on November the 12th. The high lights of our senior year were many and exciting. We received our graduat- ing pictures, name cards, and announcements, sponsored a skru-balli' game: present- ed our class play, 'tJust Ducky , published Volume X of The Legend of the Limber- lost g took our senior trip to Washington, D. C., and New York: and participated in the county music festival, and the all-school festival in which Nadean Manning was the senior queen. Our baccalaureate service was held in the school gym on the seventh of May and the graduation exercises were held the following night. - Farewell to the Geneva High School and all it has been to us! Farewell to our teachers and their patience that they have sometimes lost because of us! Farewell to our past and greetings to our future! 'Twelve SENIOR POEM Marjorie Affolder, who is not very tall, Always seems to be right on the ball: With her jokes and witty remarks, We are sure she's oil' to a very good start. Bashful boy? O no! he's not one, But he's always out for lots of fun: Driving his whoopy down the street, Bill Armstrong just can't be beat. Warren Bailey is sometimes bad, Although you seldom see him mad: Out toward Rita's he will go, The reason why we do not know. Merlin Bixler, class president, rates very high, When he passes by the girls all sigh: The friendly undertaker he's destined to be, Who he will marry, just wait and see. Earline Bollenbacher not necessarily tall. Is curly haired, dimpled, but not too small: Her brown eyes and smiles together agree. For when Sonnie's around her kisses are free, Small, blond, and quite petite, Betty Brewster is so sweet: Ready for fun and ready for play, She'll go along with the gang any ol' day. Connie Craig, who never acts her age, Reads her Caeser page by page: h To losing weight she gives all her attention, And hopes for help from some new invention. Kenneth Doherty, skipping school and on his way, Will get there tomorrow if not today: A truck driver and butcher we find, So that explains why he's never on time. Bob Farrar, thin, stately, and tall. Full of mischief, humor, and fun for all: Always polite, always obeying the rule. He has acclimated himself to Geneva High School. Carmania Fields has lots of knowledge, For soon she will be going to college: And after that we can not say. For unmarried she vows to stay. Betty Hendricks is very fond of skatin', Likes to go to Marion for her datin': But when it comes to being good. She will always do just what she should. Mary Alice Jones, who in class is never bad, Is very fond of a certain lad: When school is ended for this girl, At keeping house for hubby, she'll take a whirl. Nadean Manning, so happy and gay, Always in class has lots to say: She is never too busy to sing and to dance, And is always there, ready, in advance. Wesley Miller, grades all Always there with something to say: JJ. When acting as treasurer he's at his best, We're sure he will always pass the test. Levina Nevil, by which name we all know her, Is the rose bud to her true lover: She is an expert at baking pies and cakes, Which is true with all she undertakes. Vernon Nevil, the student manager you see, With his Civics is inclined to disagree: Pulling jokes and wisecracks every day, He thinks teasing girls is fair play. Beverly Parr, talented and clever artist, When it comes to lessons, she works the hardest, She is quite petite and has long hair, For Pud she will always care. Jerry Parr. machinist and business man, Likes to trade cars whenever he can: Wonder if??. the girl he met. Likes to watch his television set. Toot! Toot! Toot! here comes Joe, He's our singing Romeo: He appears to like all the girls, Especially the ones with shiny brown curls. John Reasoner, who is never, never sad, Sells his smiles to toothpaste ads: Toward Hartford City he wends his way, Though just why we cannot say. Christine Redford with a smile and a grin, Has many interests beyond her own kin: Bookkeeping and typing we predict are her arts, But rumors are, someone has stolen her heart. Tom Robinson small, but mighty in ball, :Can oft bring about a giants downfall: But he is destined to stay on the farm, Where we're sure' he will never do anyone harm Eugene Schindler studies so much, To get his grades in this and such: With lots of energy and plenty of snap, He may yet place Jefferson on the map. Mildred Settle's main hobby is the mail, At writing letters she'll never fail: Although she works daily in the station, She has plenty of time for recreation. Max Stucky, mischievous in class, Is fond of a certain sophomore lass: He loves to laugh and is loads of fun, And is always there after the work is done. Paul Zuercher is liked by all the folks, He takes care of the selling of cokes: At earning money he'll never fail, For he's one of our hardest working males. Miss Blanche Aspy, our sponsor so dear, As a teacher we had no fear: For she will always do her best, For the seniors and all the rest. Thirteen CLASS PROPHECY Today is June 29, 1965. Since it is my day off, I thought I would visit my classmates in my new helicopter. While I was on my way to Geneva, I dropped in at a large service station. Whom did I find there but Jerry Parr. He said he and Eugene Schindler had a Pontiac agency and are doing a big business. After spending a few minutes talking with them, I bade them good-bye and went on my way to Geneva. I landed my helicopter in Memorial Park and as I was climbing out a policeman walked up to me and began to write out a ticket. He looked up as I started to protest, and I discontinued my remarks to shout, Why, Vernon Nevil. He was as surprised to see me as I was to see him and went on to say that he farms in the summer and serves as policeman the rest of the year. I asked him if he had heard about or seen any of our old classmates. He told me that Levina Nevil was now Mrs. Don Brandt and is donating her spare time to the P. T. A. As we were talking, a big Cadillac went by. Vernon informed me that that was the vehicle belonging to Nadean Manning. She is a big success as a Powers Model and plans to marry Bill Hale, the millionaire, in November. I inquired if there were some place where we could talk, and have a cup of coffee. He suggested Peenie's Place. We were sitting there talking when who should walk in but Earline Bollenbacher. It all came clear to me who owned the place and who Peenie was. She explained that she is now Mrs. James fSonnieJ Rhodes. I guess Sonnie keeps the house and children while Earline works. She asked me to eat my dinner there, for she was featuring a popular floor show. I accepted with pleasure. After immensely enjoying myself for an hour, I assured my two former classmates that I would see them again at dinner, and left with the hope of renewing acquaintances with other friends from G. H. S. As I was crossing the street, I bumpd headlong into a very handsome man, who looked very familiar. Since it is my habit NOT to talk to strange men, I asked to be excused and went on. I did, however, turn around just once to get another look at that handsome hunk Of man- AS I WHS 100kiI1g, he stepped into an ambulance that said Bix1er's Funeral Parlor in fancy letters on the side. I knew then it must be Merlin Bixler. Having experienced so much I was just at the point of putting on my gloves when I heard a terrible noise. Startled, I looked around and saw a Shop with the sign Professor Wesley Miller out front. I immediately went in and found him working on his mechanical robot man. He also told me that he had recently performed a successful oper-ation with his new cancer cure. As he turned to give directions to his assistant, I picked up a paper lying near by and began to read it. I soon discovered the announcement that Tom Robinson and his wife were planning a large square dance in his barn for June the 29th. Why that's today, I thought, and I think I'll go at least for a little while. It was near dinner time so I left Wesley and went back to Peenie's place as I had promised. When I remarked that the meal was delicious, Peenie told me that her chief cook was Marjorie Affolder, who had won first prize the month before at the World's Fair for the best apple pie. My attention was then attracted to the floor show that was just beginning. The first attraction was Joe Potter, who sang a solo and was encored. again and again. I was told he had just returned from a big Broadway hit and is ex- pecting many more engagements. The last feature of the show was a dancing team who called them- selves t'Alotta and Yovonnef' I knew right away it was Christine Redford and her new husband. They were wonderful. I told Earline her restaurant was lovely and I hoped I could find time to come more often. From there I went to Tom's square dance, and who do you suppose the fiddler was? None other than John Reasoner. In the old days John hated musical instruments but you should have heard him. Accompanying him on the cornet was Mary Alice Jones, together they make a wonderful pair and I'm wondering if one of these days there won't be wedding bells for the two. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and when I turned around there stood Bill Armstrong. He still has that mischievous look in his eyes. Bill informed me he is the President of the Farm Bureau Co- operative of the United States. I asked him about a few of our old classmates and he told me that Betty Brewster and her husband, Morris Agler had just become the parents of twins. This necessitated a rush order of clothing, for Betty had planned for only one. Discussing further the subject of old classmates, Bill informed me that Max Stucky, Paul Zuercher, and Warren Bailey are the world's best motorcycle team. They are featured as the Daring Trio in some of the largest fairs in the world. Kenneth Doherty has the largest meat packing company in the United States even though he is never on time for work. He still lives up to his motto of our high school days, Better Late Than Never. Betty Hendricks is super- intendent of nurses at the Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne and Connie Craig is a private nurse to the president of the United States. My, don't we nurses go places! Lucky girls! Mildred Settle is married and she and her husband have their own large gaseteria in California. I've heard they sell gas to most of the nfamous movie stars. As we were talking I thought I saw Bob Farrar. Bill said that was Bob, all right, and informed me that he has a large chain of drug stores all over the United States. As the conversation continued, I asked, Where is Beverly Parr? Bill told me she was a career woman and wife fof Pud Smith, of coursel. I 'thanked Bill for all the latest news and told him good-bye. After my pleasant visit I am heading back to Paoli, my new rest home, and of course, back to my husband and two children. 'In case you're wonder- ing who I am.-why, I'm Carmania Fields. e Fourteen FIRST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE CLASS OF 1950 We, the Senior class of Geneva High School, the Second Precinct, Wabash Township, Adams County, Town of Geneva, State of Indiana, United States, North America, and the Western Hem- isphere on the planet Earth, being of unsound mind and disintegrating memory after four stren- uous years, do hereby make, publish, and declare this as our Hrst and best will and testament, here- by revoking all future wills, bequests, and devises Of whatever nature by us to be made. Early in October Mrs. Bernice Van Matre was chosen as our class sponsor, and the following class oflicers were elected for the school year: David Stucky, presidentg Jim Pyle, vice presi- dent, Kay MacWhinney, secre- tary, Carol Amstutz, treasurer. On November 8, 1949, we en- joyed a hayride to the home of Carol Amstutz, where we had a g wiener roast and played games. During the year we have lost five of our original forty-four members, namely: Jack Far- ber, Harvey Hendricks, Burley Ray Hough, Fred Werst, and Lydia Graber. However, two new students, Biruta Birznieks and Juanita Rhodes, have helped offset this loss, and make our present total forty-one members. That is the question. What should be done about them? That is the problem. When Papa Maxwell was elected head of the citizen's com- mittee, because he had one of the Hnest and most up- standing families in the en- tire community, everything should have been fine. But the girls have to complicate the matter with some JUST DUCKY letters, filled with pathos and deep heart throbs. Their masterpiece was mailed, but was not published by the newspa- per columnist. I n s t e a d , during a personal call, Miss Blayne unfolds the tragic story to Mamma Maxwell. From there things reach one of the most feverish pitches ever experienced, in fiction or in real life. ln fact the whole family seems nuts-including Papa him- self,-until the whole tan- gled story unfolds, with a very happy ending. IUNIOR CLASS PLAY PECK'S BAD BOY March 31, 1950 Henry Peck Sr. Henry Peck Jr. Mrs. Hannah Peck Jimmy Duffy - Minnie - - Luella Thorne - Clifford Jennings Melville Beaumont Lizzie - - Dahlia - - Schultz - Dora - Flora - Lora CAST SYNOPSIS Roger Coon Tom Weaver Evelyn Snow Gerald Nevil Gloria Lybarger Dorothy Farlow Lee Haines - Don Call Rita Robinson Kathleen Veach Bob Meyer Geraldine Nevil Helen Morningstar Laura Billington The play takes place in a handsomely furnished home. Henry Peck Sr., is bossed and hen-peeked throughout the play by Hannah Thorne, his wife, whom he married for money, which she didn't have. Mrs. Thorne has control over everyone but Henry Peck Jr., his pal Jimmy Duffy, and Henry's girl friend, Minnie, who really keep things mov- ing in this three-act farce comedy. Both Clifford Jennings and Melville Beaumont wish to marry Luella, Mrs. Thorne's daughter, and they try different methods of winning her mother's approval. Dora, Flora, and Lora, the Harmony sisters, who are Clifford Jen- ning's, Melville Beaumont's and Henry Peck's, old girl friends also provide many tense moments for the three men. The antics of Lizzie, the maid, Dahlia, the colored cook, and Shultz, the grocer afford much laughter. At the conclusion of the play the worm has turned. Henry Peck Sr. gains control of his wife and Clifford Jennings Wins Luella's hand. GENEVA HIGH SCHOOL BAND For a number o'f years the Geneva School has felt the need of a band. This year, through the efforts of the P. T. A., a band has been organized under the direction of Mr. Del Elliott of Bluffton. Indiana. A survey was made by the school and other interested groups to determine the in- struments available. It was then decided to purchase for school use some of the larger instruments. To help defray expenses for this, a Valentine party was sponsored by the P. T. A. on February 14. This project again proved the old adage that in unity there is strength, and was very successful from the standpoint of both entertainment and profit. Since this is the first organization of this kind since 1941, when the county band was disbanded, this aid has been greatly appreciated by the school. In the near future, the Geneva School hopes to have uniforms, and become a well- known and eificient musical group. Thirty-five COUNTY MUSIC FESTIVAL The County Music Festival was held two nights this year. On April 12 it was presented at the Monmouth High School gym and at Geneva High School on April 14. All county schools participate in this musical event. We are always happy to have Mr. Varner Chance of Fort Wayne as our guest director of the mass choruses. Thirty-six 1 Clara Baker, Geraldine Nevil, Carolyn Farlow, Nadean Manning, Dorothy Farlow, Carol Amstutz, Kay MacWhinney The annual All-School Festival was held in the gymnasium, Tuesday evening, April 25, and Friday evening, April 28. The performances were planned for two nights in an attempt to accommodate the crowd. Ap- proximately 375 students from grades 1 to 12 participated in this colorful and entertaining event. The queen, a senior girl, is chosen by a vote of the high school students. Each class chooses two girls to act as attendants to the queen. Other features of interest were the Mother Goose Court, with Janice Van Emon as Queen of Hearts, the Tom Thumb Wedding, with Phyllis Manning and Keith Vorhees as bride and groom, the traditional flag rais- ing ceremony, the junior high baseball game, and the winding of the Maypoles. The program is under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Owens, music director. THE OLD DAYS ff WERE GOOD INDEED WE'RE ON OUR WAY AND GAININ G SPEED Forty HISTORY OF GENEVA SCHOOLS By W. A. Aspy, BUILDINGS The early history of the Geneva Graded Schools is clothed in obscurity as the early records were not preserved and many con- flicting statements have been secured from memory. In the preparation of this sketch it is proper to acknowledge favors from John H. Runyan, William Reed and George Burke, who were among the first teachers, also, W. W. Briggs, our present town clerk, and G. W. Pyle, a member of the first Board of Education, The first school house in Geneva was erected by township trustee, Henry Miller, in the sumer of 1873. It was a frame build- ing of one room, which, with additions and improvements, is now occupied by George H. Kelley as a residence. The town hav- ing incorporated in 1874, the building pass- ed into the control of the Town School Board. The frame was insufficient from the first, and in the summer of 1878, a com- modious brick of four rooms was built under the supervision of J. D. Hale, E. C. Kern and J. L. Manley, who then com- posed the Board of Education. The build- ing was erected at a cost of 83,500 and well deserves to be prized as one of the greatest factors of the town. INSTRUCTORS The first instructor employed to teach in Geneva was Noah Ryan. He was hired by Trustee Miller for the winter of 1873-74. The school consisted of one department, and was the Hrst term taught in the frame building, now occupied by G. H. Kelley. Mr. Ryan was the only teacher employed by the Township Trustee for the town school. John H. Runyon, the present Secretary of the School Board, and Miss Mollie Wal- ters were the first teachers employed by the Town Board of Education. The school was divided, Mr. Runyon teaching the ad- vanced subjects, including Physical Ge- ography and Higher Arithmetic, and Miss Forty-two Principal, 1893-94 Walters taught the primary grades in the same room. This term was taught in the same building as the previous year with an enrollment of 127 and with little ap- paratus except the books and birch. The next year, 1875-76, Samuel Skeels taught the advanced department in the upper rooms of G. W. Pyles' building, then on High Street, since moved to Line Street, and now occupied by G. W. Peter- son and J. H. Runyon as a law ofiice and the lower rooms by L. W. Watson's gro- cery. The primary grades were taught by Eliza Hanlin in the frame building pre- viously occupied. The term of 1876-77 was' taught by George Burke as Principal, and Miss Anna Tetric, now Mrs. Wm. Reed, assistant. There being no other building available, both departments were taught in the one room, the frame school house. We can imagine that the principal features of this term in this crowded room were disorder and confusion. Prof, John VV. Walker, principal, taught the next term in the same building. J. S. Hotenspiller assistant, taught in the old Methodist log church in Buffalo, now used as a stable. As has been stated, the new brick was erected in 1878 and Prof. Walker was re- employed to teach the winter of 1878-79, with Miss Anna Peterson and Mollie Haines as assistants. The new building not being completed in time, Prof. Walker, assisted in the same room by Miss Peter- son, began the advanced grades in Cart- right's hall, now owned and occupied by the Geneva I. O. O. F. Lodge, while Miss Haines taught the primary department in the frame school house. In December for Januaryb all these de- partments were transferred to the new building, The new! building was damp and poorly arranged for ventilation, and in February, Prof. Walker, failing in health, resigned and J. H. Smith com- pleted the term. Prof. Walker went to Kansas but soon returned and died of con- sumption at his home in Bluffton. Mr. Smith was followed by Prof. Samuel Wal- ters, who, being sick at the beginning of the term, also died in less than a month after the beginning of the term. Prof. I. O. Jones was employed to fill the vacancy. PROGRESS The school has never risen much above the common branches, although Latin, Bookkeeping, Philosophy, and Rhetoric have been taught at different times. Al- gebra, Higher Arithmetic, and Physical Geography have been taught in most terms for a number of years, and Litera- ture has received more or less attention since 1886-87. During this term, the first attempt was made to establish a school library, and from the proceeds of an en- tertainment given by the school, Cham- bers' Encyclopedia of ten volumes was secured. At this time the library has grown to about one hundred volumes, se- lected from the best English and American authors, and, what is better, the pupils have become interested in them and read them. A literary has been organized during the present term, meeting of evenings semi- weekly, and, although comparatively few of the Reading Circle books have been read, some of the best productions of Longfellow, Whittier, Irving, Scott, and Shakespeare have been studied. There is a growing interest in good literature, which if properly supported, will lead to more systematic work. The standard of graduation has to this time been confined to the common school course, but a great need has been experi- enced for an advance, and a two year course above the common branches will be added to this requirement for graduation. The first graduating exercise was given by the class of 1885, assisted by the Ceylon class, G. W. Peterson, principal of Geneva and W. A. Aspy, principal of the Ceylon schools having united their graduates in the exercises. Since that time interesting commencement exercises have marked the close of most of the terms. It is to be hoped that the interest now manifested in our schools, may never waver, and that its future may be marked by unity, fidelity and prosperity.
