Q in N ine ODDS AND ENDS Our Teachers Since we have worked? and slaved?'? for the last four years just to please the whims of our teachers, we feel that it is only fair to us that we use this space entirely for poking fun at a few of our teachers. We are sure they are good sports Qwe hopej and will not take any offense at what is said. Our first hope is that some benevolent benefactor fbig words and we're only seventeen years oldj will contribute some sort of hammer, whether it be one of the tack variety or an eight pound Sledge, to Miss Aspy so that she may obtain order in the assembly without pounding her keys to pieces on the radiators. Since Miss Jackson gets along so well with boys we hope that all her future pupils will be boys as handsome!! and as intelligent?? as those Seniors in her trig class. As advice to future chemistry students we might suggest that they do not attempt to mix up Miss Pfeiffer during class because at times she is very easily mortified. Mrs. Owenls method of directing the choir seems to bring fine results but we think it is due more to the threatening way which she waves her arms than anything else. The teachers who are not mentioned should not feel slighted but they should not feel flattered either. Ten Q TW? 1 f ' j r N +V' if 'L z ' I- ' ,X ' LX ! L 5 .G.',l1'w , X 1 I b w -!3E5-,,, 15. Ulead pwpfaeczf On April 15, 1956, I left by plane from Geneva's Municipal Airport to visit with one of my former classmates. I found that Bill Hale, a former classmate, now owned and operated this huge air field. As I entered the plane, a sweet young lady came to me and asked what she could do for me. To my surprise it was Charlotte Chew. She was working as an air steward- ess on the Trans-Continental Air Lines. Soon I was on my way to Chicago to hear Metropolitan's greatest opera singer of the time. none other than Mary Pusey. After attending her excellent performance, a taxi then took me to the home of the former Miriam Sprunger, who had mar- ried an evangelist, a pastor of one of Chi- cago's largest Missionary Churches. During my stay with Miriam, I called Juanita Seilschott, head supervisor of nurses at the Michael Reese Hospital, by phone. Miriam and I talked about the splendid times We had while we were in high school and what some of our former classmates were now doing. Miriam said that Ella Amstutz had left two weeks ago for Miami Beach, Florida, where she is now maid in the home of the Doctors Kenneth and Eula Van Emon QMrs. Van Emon was formerly Eula Burkj. Both have an M.D. Kenneth is the head surgeon and physician at the Miama Beach Hospital and Eula is his as- sistant. Ella stays with their small three- year-old daughter, Diana Kay. She also said that Donald Snow has been appointed catcher for the Chicago Cubs. Robert Cook, having been graduated from Har- vard, has opened his new law oflice in In- dianapolis. John Lynn Penrod is a basket- ball coach for South Side High School in Fort Wayne. David Hofstetter, having enjoyed chemis- try so much in his high school days, decid- ed to be a chemistry professor and was now a professor at Purdue University. Ernesta and Ernestine Hofstetter were op- erating a clothes shop for twins at In- dianapolis, Indiana. Pud Smith is now liv- ing on a farm in Idaho, raising Pud's Spuds. Arthur Ford became successor to the large Ford Co. in Detroit, Michigan. After having spent a few days with Miriam, a taxi then took me to Chicago's largest railway station, the Union Station, where Gerald Buckey is the chief ticket manager. As I entered the train which was bound for Fort Wayne, a nice looking young man, the conductor, came and asked me for my ticket. It seemed as though I had seen him before but I wasn't sure. When he took my ticket, he said, t'Aren't you Louise Neuenschwander? I said, Yes, I ought to know you but I can't seem to remember who you are. He said, Well I'm Clifford Umpleby, a former classmate. After having talked together awhile, I learned that Melvin Hart was the engineer on the train and had been work- ing here only about a month. On the way to Fort Wayne, the train stopped at various cities, one being South Bend where I noticed a large welding com- pany the name of which was R0binson's Welding Co., the conductor walked past me then, so I asked him who this Robinson was. He said, Well that's Eugene. Lit- tle had I realized in my school days that he would own so great a company as this one. At last I reached Fort Wayne and while I went down town to do some shop- ping, I noticed a cute little dress shop which had a sign and read t'Shop at Nel- lie's. I went in and just as I thought. Nell Affolder, another classmate, was the owner. As I was walking down the street, I noticed a sign on the Athletic Building which read, Don't Miss the Greatest Box- ing Contest of the Season. Kenneth Ellen- berger, a former Geneva graduate, was fighting Clement Garribald Sabasky. Of course Kenneth won! Then I returned to my duties at home after having spent a very pleasant time vacationing. Seventeen Ni ,AS 2. R Q , ,QQ-Q. . w ,w11x.,. ixmi , A Birclseye View of our SENIORS We, 7fze Seniau . We soon became accustomed to this new world in spite of ourselves. We were fortunate to get Mrs. Rhoades for our sponsor. On October 30, the class had a most enjoyable Hallowe'en party at the home of Iva Lou Miller. The following Spring we sponsored a party in the school gym. In September 1944, we entered the assembly with more assurance than we had in our previous year. Our number had dwindled to thirty-two, and during the year Joyce Booher, Robert Everhart. Melvin Hendricks. and Adrian Sprunger left us. We held a Ha1lowe'en party in Lee Dale Neuen- Schwander's barn. We also had a hayride the Same evening. In the Spring, we journeyed to Decatur for a skating party at the Sunset Rink. The latter part of the year we chose and ordered our class play books. September 4, 1945, our group of twenty-nine boys and girls entered the high school as independent juniors. While looking each other over during the lirst few days we noticed a new-comer, Jane Farlowi however, we were told that Ruth Eicher had moved to Michigan. Our class presented the play, 1VIumbo Jumbo, on October 16. 1945. On October 24, the main party of the year was held at the home of our sponsor, Mrs. Rhoades. The presentation of our class play, oper- ation of the candy stand, the arrival of our rings, and the Junior-Senior reception were the high lights of our Junior year. It is with anticipation of great achievement that we look forward to our Senior year, in which we hope to make even more exciting history. We tried to be big and very dignified, but didn't succeed very well. One morning Mr. Hunt got up in front Of the assembly and called us a group of 'iFeeble Minded Freshmen, which brought us down a little. One morning our Freshmen class was called to- gether for a business meeting, We learned that our sponsor was to be Mrs. Owens. We had jolly times together. On October 19, 1945 we had a Hallowe'en party at the home of Mrs. Owens, our sponsor. Mr. Hunt went along as our guest on our hayride. Six members of the team are seniors Which means they will be lost by graduation this spring, but a promising group of underclassmen are coming along to re- place them. For the third consecutive year the Cards won the county tourney. On the opening night of the tourney they defeated Pleasant Mills 39-15, Kirkland 25-22 in the semi-finals Saturday afternoon, and Monmouth 30-24 in the final game Saturday night. The ball used throughout the tourney was given as a trophy to the winning team. Coach Long did a good job in handling the team and is one of the finest coaches Geneva High School has had. Kenneth Teeter served as student manager of the team. 1945-1946 Back Row-R. O. Hunt, Principal, W. Kamman, R. Mathys, W, Hale. J. Penrod, D. Snow, R. Cook, H. C. Long, Coach Front Row-C. Miller, W. BILL HALE,SSDlO1'. jumped Center for the Cards, but helped to bring' the ball down the court and a good n'an on long shots. JOHN PENROD. Senior,a guard, played the pivot, and was very good on shots from that position, ROBERT Coon. Senior. played forward and helped take the ball off the backboard, al- so a good one-hand-- ed shot. lWELVIN HART, Senior. a good defensive player, worked at either forward or guard. DoN SNONV, S e n io r. played forward, took the ball off from the biggest men. He was always a scoring threat. BILL DOHERTY, Junior, a forward and a good left handed shot. LESTER STANLEY. Jun- ior, played forward and guard and proved to be a valu- able substitute, a good team player. STANLEY TEETER, Soph- omore, small an d fast, but lacking ex- perience, will be a valuable man next year, BILL KAIXGMAN, Sopho- more, a substitute Center and good on rebounds, lacks ex- perience but will be an improved player next year. Baseball A Baseball team was organized last fall after a number of years absence. Because of this We were handicapped by the lack of a first-class pitcher. although, Snow, Ellenberger, and Gardner did a capable job. Our home games were played on the town park diamond which was leveled and a backstop erected. We played five games. winning one and losing four. Second Team The Geneva Seccnds won 6 games and lost ll this year. The team was composed mostly of Freshmen, Sophomcres and Juniors which means we should have a good team next year. The boys played gocd ball part of the time and at other times seemed that they couldn't hit the basket. With more experience and added growth they should develop into a fine team. We. the Seniors. wish them the best of luck in future games. Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva .,.,... . ,,., .. Forty-one IOKES Coach, f'How do you explain that barrel of beer I found in your room? Penrod, Doctor's orders, sir. He said that drinking beer would restore my strength. Coach, And did it? Penrod, Yes sir, when I bought the beer I couldn't hardy push it around and now I can push it all around the room. :2: S :jc :B Mother on train, Tommy, if you are not a good boy I shall smack you. Mother, Marry him and between us we'll convince him that he is wrong. Kenneth, It's great speeding along like this: Don't you feel glad you're alive? Don Snow, Glad isn't the word, I'm amazed. You cannot inherit character. You must build it. If dad is worried when daughter is out with a boy friend, it is because he has memories. Two Irishmen had been fighting pester- ing mosquitoes on a blistering hot night. About two o'clock they finally got to sleep, WHILE in a half doze, a lighting bug came into their room. Seems she walked into a seed store and asked a clerk to give her instructions on how to sow wild oats. A husband was puttering around in the back ya.rd with some boards and, nails while his wife lay in bed with a very bad cold. H0w's the wife? asked the neighbor. Not so good. Sorry, is that her cough'n? Oh, no, this here is a chicken coop. Last spring when a committee was se- lecting flowers for the Junior-Senior Re- ception. I would like to have a four-day leave sir, my wife is moving and she wants me to help her with the heavy pieces. The ofiicer speaks crisply, 'tSorry, Jones, I've been expecting you in here. Your wife called me yesterday and told me she thought you were the clumsiest clown she ever saw. Under no circumstances she advised me did she want you around the house on moving day. The G. I. stared sadly at the officer, then turned to leave, he paused at the door. Lieutenant, he said, There are two men in this outfit who play fast and loose at the truth and I'm one of them. I'm not even married. 121 She said, I got a typhoid injection last week and it hurts terribly! He looked down at her white unscarred arms and shoulder and said, t'But where were you injected? In Philadelphia, she said sweetly. Is your car a roadster? Roadster! Yeah, don't you know what a roadster is? Sure, a roadster is a chicken's hus- band. ii: 4: The only difference between a cutie and an old maid is that the cutie goes out with the Johnnies and the old maid sits home with the Willies.
