Events of the pep rally consisted of speeches from fall sports coaches and football players while cheers came from the cheerleaders. The highlight of the night was the announcing of this year's royalty. Reigning over Homecoming 1976 were (counter-clockwise from the top) Queen Jane Swisher and King Ray Shaver; Princes and Princesses Mark Shick and Sally Sandman; Steve Stern and Carol Cox; senior attendants Pat Temple and Wade Kuipers; Junior attendants Ruth Prince and Dominick Nasti; Sophomore attendants Cindy Montana and Dave Pease; and Freshman attendants Marcia Kautz and Don Bashaw. The Parade On October 7, traffic was held up by the Homecoming parade. Senior class took first place (upper left) in float competition; following were sophomores with second (lower left); juniors with third (upper right); and freshmen with fourth (lower right). Marching Band. . Collectively hiked hundreds of miles in sunny and swampy weather. The band entertained at halftime by making smoking cannons and whirling wheels. During the Homecoming performance, the fans had good cause to wonder whether or not the Senior Class had worked in cahoots with the band, for the theme of their first place float was the same as the featured song - Got a Ticket to Ride. At St. Charles, however, the Vikings mustered their best game of the season, scoring at will and trouncing the rivals 37-15. The conference season opened at Waubonsie V. where the Vikings handed the Warriors a lesson in football. A second half rally stopped Batavia’s hopes, and with that momentum the Vikings crushed contender Kaneland in a big Homecoming game. The Vikings survived Oswego and then dropped a tough one to Morris in a quagmire. Sycamore stunned the Vikings early and the vaunted Geneva comeback didn't happen. Plainfield scored late and eliminated the Viking's playoff hopes. Viking Tri-Captains, left to right: Mark Schick. Ray Shaver, and Wade Kuipers. 48 Geneva's backfield included Senior Pete Davis (upper left), Conference scoring Champ Junior Tom Livingston (above middle), and Junior Tim Suminski (above right). Pete Gilligan (left) frequently led in tackle points and was awarded Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Homer Lord (below left) dominated the middle defense and teams here with Gilligan. Another bright spot on the Geneva squad was its excellent special teams. Pepper and Stem (below) comer a Bulldog. 49 Clockwise from upper right: Sharpy nails a panther behind the line. Suminski leaps for an interception (he dropped it). The Kaneland victory shows on Pete's face. Shave grounds another panther. Sammy signals a Davis score. Homer decommissions a Bulldog. The sophomores, paced by medalist Frank Cesarone, captured the conference crown. The Varsity squad played to third place behind the play of captain Steve Wokas and the steady improvement of Doug Weiner. These two tied in district competition and the ensuing playoff sent Doug to state - competition. Wokas was Most Valuable and Weiner and Tim Dahltorp were Most Improved. Henry Pinter was elected Teacher of the Fourth Quaner by the student body for his outstanding contribution to Gecohi’s Music Depanment for 26 years. i 190 This page is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Edward Plichta, who died this Spring. Mr. Plichta had many sides other than the one seen daily here at school. Remember Mr. Plichata? A mischevious twinkle in his eye. A small sidelong smile. A totally organized teacher. A logical mind. A Fullbright scholar. An author of a braille spelling dictionary. An honest man. In Gentle Memory °f Edward S. Plichta Many students can be thankful if they had the experience of being taught by Mr. Plichta. He taught as he would like to be taught, with preparation and consideration. Always: Discussing Caesar as if he were a friend. Shaking a finger at a lazy student, saying, Learning is as much your responsibility as it is mine.” Encouraging a student to learn. Describing Rome as if he were actually walking through the streets during its prime. Listening to the other side even when he didn't agree. A dependable friend. A fair teacher. A loving husband and father. A well-travelled, well- rounded man. A person who lived as an example and treated others with respect. A good man. The high opinion of Mr. Plichta that was held by all, is exemplified by the quote of Dr. Roy C. Turnbaugh below. Ready for new experiences. Wailing for tomorrow as eagerly as he was living today. Searching for truth, Caring . . . May he rest in Peace and always feel safe, wanted and loved. Every school should have a Mr. Plichta. He taught at Geneva Community High for sixteen years after substantial experience in other schools. In the funeral homily it was observed that as a teacher he enjoyed the opportunity of witnessing for his faith. This was certainly true in a broad and humanistic sense. He exemplified the living of an examined life enriched by enduring values. He could become enthusiastic about Latin, ancient or modem Rome, or any topic of current interest. It was a rare student who was as well informed on current movies or re-runs as he was. He left his imprint on us all. ” A Sincere Thank-You To Our Sponsors For 1977 Geneva Girl Tails Unlimited Knowles TB Z Realty Corp. r TUN l ®F ALSO JtMiQRS CONTEMPORA?!
