Something New Nineteen-seventy-six. We celebrate our centennial year as a high school. We celebrate our bicentennial year as a nation. Further, we elebrate the naming of our yearbook on its 100th birthday, because a real name is long overdue. And because it’s nice to have a name of your own. ETARBELEC, we’ve worked a long time in preparation for this moment. We welcome your arrival. And we celebrate with your name. 1976 ETARBELEC Staff Editor-in-Chief Kai Gericke Sports Dave Fauntleroy Fine Arts Abby Harper Sports Steve Stern Fine Arts Laura Pinter Sports Sue Nolden Activities Renee Nepstad Business Sara Sherman Activities Ann Vanderslice Classes Jonalee Lavis Photographer Ron Donovan Classes Fran Livingston Photographer Sue Re if Photographer Chris Goulet Photographer Scott Lavis Photographer Sue Covey Photographer Dave Stevens Photographer Scott Ohlfest School Centennial Rick Howington Photographs Photographer, Advisor Geneva Republican Bill Karlblom Geneva Community High School, Geneva, Illinois COVER DESIGN: Laura Pinter 4firapliair!3 of T aard of tfdn liort fUss of -’ciciitij- ifllil. Two graduation announcements, circa 1878 and 1887, are pictured in the top corners. The high school originally was on the top floor of the building and later occupied the entire structure. The second high school (below) was dedicated in 1922 and is now the Middle School. The present building (right) was put up in 1958, with dedication ceremonies on Nov. 9, 1958. Additions were erected in 1964 and 1968, with a major addition this past year (above and bottom right). It was dedicated on May 16, 1976. 2 Community High School J cu rt If rdt tu y met et y tifjftt ft TWELFTH GRADUATING EXERCISES or tmc errt . wtrr wr nts GENEUftiHIGHS SCHOOL, GENEVA. ILLINOIS. Opening night at new Burgess Field shows the Vikings avenging their only loss of 1974 by shutting out West Chicago. A week later two big plays by St. Charles spell defeat for the Vikings. Burning about their loss, the Vikings smash conference favorite Plainfield, and newcomer Waubonsie Valley. Homecoming is a success as the Vikings roll over Batavia with three second quarter touchdowns. Playing their first away game, the Blue Machine defeats previously unbeaten Kaneland. With the conference title in sight, the Vikings shut out their last three conference opponents including a victory over Morris on flooded Burgess Field. The playoffs begin and an unusually tense team doesn’t pull away from Aurora Central until the final quarter. In the quarterfinals the Vkiings come back - after a shocking 86 yard kickoff return by Rochelle on the opening play - to defeat the Hubs. Ed Gericke scores two touchdowns for the Vikings including a 60 yard run with a fumble. In the semifinals, in what was termed the battle of the fullbacks, the Vikings grind Geneseo out of the playoffs. School and town spirit reach a peak as the Vikings head downstate. Playing in miserable weather and having a lousy game, the Vikings fall to Metamora. Disappointment reigns supreme as the Vikings have to settle for second place in the state. A tremendous welcome greets the team as they return home. Although the last game was a disappointment, it was a season that will not soon be forgotten. Carol Yerges was singles conference champ. The doubles team of Jill Sharp and Brenda Broy also came in first place. Laura Pinter was voted Most Valuable Player and Nancy Hill was Most Improved. 65 Cross Country '75 In his initial season as cro s country coach, Mr. VanDeveer was greeted with a team weakened by graduation. Depth was a major problem as the harriers set more attainable goals. Consistency paid off for Brett Larson in the form of an 8th place conference finish. Mr. VanDeveer also had ample praise for sophomore Bob Davidsom and junior Pete Blank and many others. Davidson finished a strong 4th in the sophomore conference meet and Blank came across 16th in the varsity conference meet. Also doing well in the sophomore finale was Randy Howington, who finished just nine places behind Davidson. ROW 1: Coach Van Deveer. Ron Betz, David Stevens. Bill Whiting, Bob Davidson. Steve Yuill. In her official capacity, Dr. Broderick accepts the completed project from the architect. Parents, the community, and our new principal for next year, Dr. Marcotte, and his family join us in celebrating new space and new possibilities. But we have been living in these facilities for sometime already. They are comfortable and new and we have adjusted to them quickly. So, too, we adjusted to the notion of being freshmen in a new building four years ago. For a short time this has been our world, our home, our building. But quickly this dissolves into our past, and we leave to enter something else that will be new, that will require adjustment, and that will give comfort and satisfaction. 191 Is This the Beginning . . . mmmm
