The worn and festive WELCOME ALUMNI banner (top) decorated the scene along with the creative field decorations. The Homecoming Court (middle) included from left to right Attendants Kevin Bell, Kelli Cornick, and Judy Banker; Homecoming Royalty Brett Sanders, Queen Barb Jakubowski, Emily Waters, and Sue Kessler; Attendant Steve Glass; and. not pictured, Ed Gcricke and King John Nitkey. The bonfire was especially fun (bottom left). The stolen wood was set aflame to warm the hearts and bodies of the chilled couples. To preside over the bright pageantry were the wonderfully becoming faces of Queen Barb Jakubowski and King John Nitkey (bottom right). To top it all off, our heroic football team summoned all their skill and energy to create a machine that demolished a whimpering Kaneland squad. The extravagant 54-13 victory for the Vikings brought smiles of superiority to the buoyant faces of Geneva fans. Float Competition It was an overcast sky for Friday afternoon’s Homecoming Parade, with an ever-present chill to remind us to bring warm things to the Big Game that night. The floats that afternoon provided the color that the sky was missing. The parade was a flurry of colors and figures, passing the school with a trailing crowd that followed the procession downtown. Awards this year went to the following entries: the senior float finally placed first (top), the sophomore float second (upper left), and junior float third (lower right), and the freshman float came in last (lower left). The Homecoming Dance . . . was exceptionally well attended. Cou- ples boogied, jived, and tummy-hugged to the heavy sounds of Chariot. Everyone turned out in their slinkiest dresses and snappiest coats and ties, capping off another one of those successful Homecomings. 12 Faces in the Crowd The football field, ready for the game (top). The night flew by in a whirl of colors, music, and cries of I’ll trade ya!‘ Most couples were in high spirits while corsages and boutonnieres fell apart in the furor. Santa Claus (or at least his hat) made an appearance to contribute to the festivities. There was no mistle- toe, but that didn’t seem to stop anyone. 16 17 The Twirp Dance Was . . . ... a wild way to get over the March blahs. The guys were happy because the girls finally paid the bill. The couples w'crc spiffed up right down to their wing-tips and platforms. All in all, every- one at the dance was up for the gala occasion. 18 Carnival Insight-out provided us with another evening of fun. The Carnival changed the upstairs gym into a mid-way filled with boothes selling everything from french cuisine to kisses and balloons. There was a hypnotist show and the evening ended with a soc-hop. (upper left). Working for peanuts, (lower left). Sandy Shick is iranfixcd (upper right). Hot and tired cou- ples eventually straggled home early in the morning after an exhilarating Post-Prom party at the Baker Hotel in St. Charles. 20 21 22 F.T.A., F.H.A., and F.C.A. The Future Teachers of America, headed by Miss Donahue, spent many hours as teaching aides in the lower schools (far right), while the Future Homemakers cooked up a storm all year long, and brought speakers in to discuss fashion designing, merchandising, and consumer educa- tion (middle). The Fellowship of Christian Ath- letes, an organization designed to foster friend- ship among young men this year, had a big change as they went co-ed to form the Fellow- ship of Christian Students. 23 Mid-Valley Vocational Center The Mid-Valley Vocational ('enter is a sys- tem of education that prepares students for a full time job or career immediatley upon graduation. There are part-time job co-opera- tives in addition to training as secretaries, mechanics, technicians, computer program- mers, nurses’ aides, cooks, and training in child care and graphic communications. The Students on Safety concentrated this year on educating students and adults alike on safety by sponsoring several different programs: a bicycle safety course at the elementary schools, a winter safety program, and a Rules of the Road review course at night school. Mem- bers also participated in a week end convention on safety in Peoria. Is Everyone's World Elizabeth Carlsson from Sweden was greeted by Geneva with an incredible amount of enthusiasm, and was hosted by two families, the Sanfords and the Harrisons. Rosanne Suminski also participated in the Americans Abroad program, and spent last summer liv- ing with a family in Tunisia on an A.F.S. scholarship. (top). Members painted the school washrooms twice this year, repaired the hole in the stage curtain, sponsored an anti- smoking lecture at the Middle School, and brought a speaker on the same topic to the high school. The club also gave a party for children at the Growing Place, and organized several fund raising projects for various charities. (top). Members enjoy one of their many meetings, (middle). Queens of France It was a fine one-act story that was presented to the English classes by Kathy Rohrs, Wendy Zumbrum, Pam Olsen. Alice Chace. Fred Myers, Misty Bauman, and Ann Soderstrum (student director). Although the plot was sim- ple, (the con-man of New Orleans con- vinces each woman in turn that she is heir to the throne of France), the dif- ferences of each woman's reaction revealed much of human nature. The cast consisted of Gretchen Lord as Miss Giddens, Dave Gibbs as Miles, Jill Close as Flora, Kathy Rohrs as Miss Grose, Rob Reese as Quint, and Louise Shackleton as the Ghost. Drama Club: A Year of Talent There was an outpouring of plays by the Drama Club this year as the group decided to sponsor more productions for the junior members while still giving the choice parts to the actors and actresses with more experience. Among their productions this year were The Queens of France. ' A Christmas Carol.” The Innocents,” She Stoops to Conquer.” and several smaller one-acts. • t n M (top). The year was overflowing with bake sales and art sales, where student artwork was sold to provide funds. There were also carnival booths, floats, and field trips to Northern for art exhibitions. The Annual Spring An Show was better than ever under the Art Club’s sponsorship, and even the halls were filled with stu- dent works. 39 Choir The Geneva choir proved to be no less than amazing in 1975. Under the direction of Maurice Hill and the choir board (pictured below), the choir produced an impressive season schedule. Although hampered by the construction of the new school, the choir had six successful concerts, and won honors at the St. Louis national contest and the state girls, solo, and mixed choir contests. 40 41 Viking Review — Smash of the Decade! Well, this view may seem a trifle prejudiced, but it was definitely a laugh-a- minutc affair. Rick Nagel, the M.C., kept the audience shocked and hysterical with laughter with his highly original between act skits. All the classes were represented, from the Freshman Jockcttes to the Senior Sex Symbols. There were even a few serious acts, including folksingers and pianists. There was also an All-American German Band to liven up the air with a few polkas. Students cavorted around the stage, satirizing smoking in the bathrooms, chemistry class, prom night, and high school in general. And will we ever for- get Trixie DeLight and Don Decree in the Divorce Game, that featured Raoul and Congolia Breckenridge? 42 Facing page. (top). Ann Soderstrum dressing for Prom (middle). The jazz band was so good that it was constantly in demand at parties, concerts, assemblies, and banquets, including the annual Viking Review and the Honor Banquet where they were a well- applauded success under the direction of Mr. Pinter. 44 What Sounds! Be it pep band, concert band, or marching band, the motto was always to play to your utmost.” The students’ cars were an enthusiastic audience, and soon created a large entourage for the band. (top). The classic MG formation (left). Karen Alquist gets it together, (right). Abby Harper hits a few tunes. 45 The year began full of hope for the Student Council, and despite the hassles of homecoming, members tried their best to bring significant changes into the system. However, as the end of the year approached, the council realized the difficulty of advanc- ing any policy changes, and decided to resign themselves to more interesting activities, such as bake sales, banana eating contests, soc-hops, dances, and trike races. In the end, members could truly say to the myriads of critics that surrounded them, that they were really good for SOMEthing. 46 FACING PAGE, (top). Forensics, sponsored by Miss Quantock, took both a readers’ theater group (Orpheus), and a contest play (Taming of the Shrew) to sectionals. Insight-Out. headed by Mike (Skip) Simon and Mr. Mansfield, ground out the monthly paper, gen- erally producing a a controversy. 48 International Club: A New Merger A new organization this year. International Club, was a merger of the old French and Spanish Clubs, with a few Latin students thrown in for fun. Members were busy all year with parties, films, dances, floats, dinners, and other assorted presentations. In the top picture, hungry' members wolf down European yummies; in the middle, Mark, Nancy, and Elisabeth demonstrate part of the St. Lucia festival; at left, Sally and Miss Woods try out a German polka. The Staff. . . The yearbook was a hassle, a fight, an argument, a laugh, a headache, a philosophi- cal discussion, an obscene joke, and a big pain.” It was anger, gratitude, friendship, deadlines, lost pictures, a comedy hour, and sometimes a sick reality. Whatever it was, the staff managed to produce what is hopefully a good” yearbook, though every week nobody ever thought so. Despite weekends and late nights of hard work, it was a learning experi- ence for everyone, not just on the technical side, but on the personal level, too. Our advisor for many years, Mr. Howard Ulin, left at mid-year and was replaced by Mr. Bill Karlblom. SEPTEMBER: Thirty-nine guys finally became a finely honed machine. They came away victori- ous from the first test at Elmwood Park. They convincingly trounced the arch-fiends to the north, defeated Sycamore in the front of the home crowd by 28, and traveled to Plainfield for an 8 point win. OCTOBER: Disaster struck as the breaks fell on the side of West Chicago and the Vikings were nipped by 3 points. They were back in form the following week to the tune of 33-0 over Batavia. The weather got colder and colder, but Geneva poured it on thicker, tallying 34 points in the homecoming triumph over the Knights. The Vikings were playing on Burgess Field for the last time, where they beat Oswego by 29 points. NOVEMBER: The team ended a great season ON the field by winning out over Morris, but off the field there was frustration, irritation, and disappointment as a last minute IHSA rule change elim- inated the Vikings from participation in the state tournament. The Vikings began the season a bit shakily, losing the Thanksgiving game to St. Charles and plac- ing fourth in the Thanksgiving tournament. However, they finally showed signs of jelling in two conference wins over We-go and Plainfield between losses to powerhouses Batavia and Oswego. After the first of the year, Geneva finally hit stride, with their only Little Seven defeats coming from Batavia, in front of a capacity filled Civic Center crowd, and at Kaneland, in a hotly contested one-point overtime decision. But even a bigger disappointment took place in the opening game of the regional tourney at Sycamore, where the Vikings were again denied by a lucky shot at the buzzer. (right). STANDING: Mrs. Sally Lcsmann and Mrs. Sally Estes. 140 Meeting students’ needs and prepar- ing them for the after-graduation world is a job that taxes all the talents a teacher can muster. The after-gradua- tion world now' goes off in myriad directions, and the responsibility to direct the college bound as well as the vocationally trained and the skilled laborer is great, indeed. Besides these major responsibilities of teaching and learning, the faculty and students had other things to cope with this year ... it was going on out- side the classroom and it penetrated inside the classroom. Construction workers did their best, but the noise and the dust and dirt, not to mention the water flows, added a new dimen- sion to arriving at school each morn- GUIDANCE COUNSELORS: STANDING: Mr. W. McElroy, Mrs. R. Swanson, Mrs. C. Vignola, and Mr. J. Morris. SEATED: Mrs. M. Berry, Guidance Secretary'. ing. Patience prevailed, however, and student and teacher alike grinded their teeth, talked louder, and even smiled occasionally . . . say, at an electrical cord creeping out an opening in the room ... or the old hard hat worker doing a soft shoe routine outside an open window, in time with the tapping of the teacher’s chalk on the black- board. Teaching this year truly required innovative techniques to keep up with the competition! And the end of the year brought with it the parting of friends among the faculty, too. The staff lost a gentle friend and a fine fellow-worker when our school nurse for 14 years, Mrs. Helen Hokonson, retired at the close of the school year. We will miss her services greatly, and we wish her the very best in the years to come. LIBRARIANS: Mrs. D. Neri and Mrs. G. Ferguson. SCHOOL NURSE: Mrs H. Hokon- SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: Mr. G.
