Right Mrs. Kennedy receives an apple from Heather Vickers. Kindergarten is the first step on which we stand for the basis of our future. In this time, we learn the value of friendship as well as the ABC's. Learning to share and being a part of a group are equally important. During the elementary years, the process becomes harder, yet we still find the time to gain the knowledge of friendship, trust, and loyalty . . 2 0 Above. College. marriage and jobs eventually move us into a full circle when our children begin to move toward their dreams. Jtf MSMOKV In 1984, this school suffered the loss of two important people: Nick Sauls, a faculty member, and Shane Stading, a fifth grade student. Each in his own way contributed greatly to the morale and the education of G.C.H.S. students. Always willing to help in any way, they were both an inspiration to us all. Mr. Sauls, with his keen desire that all students do their best in math skills, devoted much time in drilling basic math concepts. His love and concern for his students were examples of his dedication to education, as well as. concern for each student's personal development. Shane's bright smile, cheerful attitude, and determined spirit were his legacy to all who knew him. His understanding of what 'real' living is, no matter how short one’s life span may be. well surpassed his years. Both taught us courage in their respective battles against cancer and leukemia. Their presence will be missed, but what they gave to us will always be treasured. Arlie Nickerson Sauls, Jr. (Feb. 22. 1929 Mar. 12. 1984) (Dec. 15. 1973-July 10. 1984) 12 CM SZSP ecosen zo. . Students show more pride in being a 'Dog. Excitement grips the air as the preparations begin. It is HOMECOMING. Homecoming is special. It is a time for decorating homeroom doors, floats, cars, the dance and to show school spirit. Seniors start to realize that this is the last time that they can really participate in the festivities and preparations for the game. Purple and gold crepe paper, poster paper and magic markers are bought by the dozens. Corsages are ordered and the week begins. MISS HOMECOMING LUANNE GUILFORD On Oct. 5, 1984, Luanne Guilford was named Miss Homecoming 1984-85. Sponsored by Larry Smith, she was selected by fellow students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelth grades. Luanne was crowned by Jimmy Roy Hendrix, president of the student body, in the pregame activities. Among other things, Luanne serves as head majorette. 21 SENIOR ATTENDANT: Debra Ketchem Escorted by Jimmy Roy Hendrix JUNIOR ATTENDANT: Kelly Coe Escorted by Tony Hales SOPHOMORE ATTENDANT: Neenie Phillips Escorted by Kenny Fondren JUNIOR HIGH ATTENDANT. A special meeting of the Student Council was held to discuss the situation. Mr. Whitaker informed the Student Council that they had to vote whether to hold the parade after school or dismiss before lunch and make up the half day during Easter holidays. The vote was unanimous. The parade was to be held during school. Tradition lives on! 24 ZMB QAMS The homecoming game was a mark which showed another year had past. As time progresses, the faces at this special event will be replaced: however, this night will always be a cherished memory to those who have attended a GCHS homecoming game. On Friday, October 5,1984, the long awaited rivalry reached its culmination, as the GCHS Bulldogs faced the Geneva Panthers. Though the 'Dawgs were shut out, 21-0, our heads as well as our spirits remained high. Thus ended Homecoming ’84-85’. Top left: Homecoming Court 1984-85. They returned home with trophies, plaques, and medals in honor of their performances. The band, marching to the musical selections Off the Line , My Favorite Things”, On Broadway , and If , first attended the Daleville Invitational Marching Contest where the drum majorette, majorettes, drum line, and band received superior ratings. An excellent rating was awarded to the GCHS colorguard. After several long weeks of practice, the band traveled to their second contest at Troy University. All Units of the band were rated superior. To close the 1984 marching season, the GCHS band traveled to one last contest at Enterprise High School. Once again superior ratings were awarded to the drum majorette, majorettes, and drum line, with excellent ratings going to the colorguard and band. In addition to competing in contests, the GCHS Marching Band performed a halftime show at all ballgames, marched in the Homecoming Parade and Peanut Festival Parade, and sponsored its own marching contest during the Peanut Festival week in Dothan. The band was once again recognized for its superiority and was awarded a second place trophy and monetary award of $300 in the Saturday Peanut Festival Parade. Dannelly Martin, band director, is in his third year at GCHS. Under his direction, the band has continued to grow in size and has increased its number of awards since he first came in 1982. These are only a few o! the terms used to define what was felt throughout the football season. PAIN — The injuries obtained while trying to bring a winning tradition back tc GCHS. FRUSTRATION — When you know you have done your very best and the rewards and recognition you deserve don't come from other teammates or the fans. ANCtR When teammates act as if they don't care about the outcome of the game. DISAPPOINTMtNT — When everyone has given 110% and played as a team anc you still come up on the short end of the stick. HtARTACHt — When we. as Seniors, look back over the years shared as teammates and realize there will never be another opportunity to line up as a team again. As we reflect on the years spent playing football, we will never forget the friendships between the coaches, the teammates, and the fans. BUSINESS DRAMA DRIVER’S EDUCATION Among the many business courses offered in high school are VBE I, VBE II. Shorthand. Accounting. Office Procedures, and Word Processing. These courses involve the teaching of skills in working with typing, filing, secretarial work, mathematical problems, and computers. Junior high students have the opportunity to take a course entitled Business Explorations. A new course was added to the curriculum this year for students interested in theater. Taught by Mrs. Meredith Capshaw. students in drama study poetry interpretation, dramatic acting, and voice control among various other things. This year students videotaped two plays, presented monologues, duologues, and a play, and told stories to the kindergarten. Driver’s Education, an elective offered at GCHS, helps prepare young drivers for the mechanics of good driving. For one six weeks, students are in the classroom learning basic skills needed to prepare them for actual driving. Research tells us that a child’s self-concept at the beginning of kindergarten can be a better predictor of reading achievement, by the end of the second grade, than a test of h is intelligence.
