Bottom: Coach J.D. Chesteen teaches Brent to kick the football I V 2 Time is a childhood, being loved, giving love, playing in sandpiles, taking flowers home to mom. It is learning about football from granddad, going to school for the first time, being snaggle-toothed, having freckles and hating them. It is swinging, memorizing the multiplication tables and being extra good two weeks before Christmas. 1 Left: Having concessions at recess is a new edition at middle school. Below: Learning to add and subtract is always a challenge at elementary school. 3 Time is growing up ... being a misunderstood adolescent. Going to high school, feeling afraid and trying not to let it show. Sitting on the bench while the big boys win the game. Not being chosen cheerleader or class favorite, being in love for the first time. Learning to drive, trying to be an adult and a child at the same time and not succeeding at either but rather compromising on an in-between state ... teenage. Time is ending and beginning. Left: Shannon Lee and Tami Spivey pose for fhe camera! Below: Some GCHS students spend their lunch time sharing the events of the day as well as eating. Time is all the todays and yesterdays that are now memories of fhe greatest times of our lives , for fhey, too, were once tomorrows. STirne With the beginning of each new day and the passing of each moment we watch our lives changing from what they are into what they will become. It is the small, seemingly unimportant occurrences which make up most of life. Everything a person undertakes, whether it be great or small, goes toward creating his lasting memories. We should not take advantage of what now seems common and day to day. Instead, each action we take should be toward making the best of everything we do. It is well to lay a good foundation for the memories we will build on it in the future. 10 STUDENT LIFE AT GCHS 12 Below: The GCHS Marching Bulldog Band during a half-time performance. The 1983 Junior-Senior Prom took place April 22 at the Lake Lodge in Fort Rucker. The lodge was decorated in shades of peach, ivory and brown. The entrance way into the ballroom was covered with peach and brown flowers. White panels with ivory, peach and brown tissue balls outlined the walkway into the room. Above the dance floor, giant tissue balls and bells in the prom colors hung suspended from the ceiling. Tables were decorated with floral arrangements, candles, and '83 class signs. The theme, Just You and I, was repeated on the prom favors, large hurricane glasses imprinted in brown, and the prom booklets which were brown velour imprinted in gold. The welcome was given by Junior class president, Jerome Hendrix, and the response was given by Senior class president, Bobby Owen. The seniors were invited to participate in the first dance. Q-97 D.J., Mike Ezell, then presented the record Just You and I to Senior class president, Bobby Owen. Left The Junior Class of 1983. IS Preparing For The Big Night ... Decorating Above; “Cheese! Contrary to what many may think, the GCHS Marching Bulldog Band does more than perform at halftime during football games. Throughout the year the band competes in marching and concert festivals, participates in several parades, and performs concerts in the winter and spring months proving that band is a year round activity. Two weeks before school starts, all prospective band members spend approximately ten hours a day learning, performing, and perfecting the musical selections and marching drill of a halftime show Before the GCHS band camp begins, the majorettes and drum major attend the band camps held on various college campuses. Practices do not stop with the beginning of school! Tuesday and Thursday nights are devoted to band rehearsals. During this time, the band prepares for marching contests and each Friday night's halftime show. The 1983 GCHS Marching Band, wearing new purple and gold uniforms, marched to the musical selections Coronado , Beat It , I Won't Hold You Back , and a drum solo The Mexican Hat Dance . Excellent ratings were received at the Phenix City Marching Contest and the Troy Marching Contest by the band, majorettes, and drum section. It may be six or seven years, or only two or three, But will you, till I call her back, take care of her for me? She'll bring her charms to gladden you and should her stay be brief, You’ll have her lovely memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return, but there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn. I've looked this wide world over in search for teachers true, And from the throngs that crown life's love, I have selected you! Now will you give her all your love, Nor think the labor vain, Nor hate me when X come to take her back again? I fancied that 1 heard them say9 'Dear Lord, thy will be done, 'Por all the joys the child will bring, the risk of grief we'll run'. We'll shelter her with tenderness we'll love her while we may, And for the happiness we've knows forever grateful stay. But should the angels call for her much sooner than we've planned We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand. The Geneva County High School Varsity Cheerleaders of 1983-84 would like to dedicate this page in honor of Katrina Byrd, a member of the 1982-83 squad. Vivacious, energetic, spirited, happy-go-lucky, and school minded are the terms one often learn about a cheerleader. These are the life traits that typified Katrina. Geneva County High was a special place to her and the Bulldogs and Friday nights were the time for her to display this love and pride that she felt for her school. 165 Compliments Of Randy Shields Tom's Toasted Peanuts Potato Chips Delicious And Candies Peanut Butter Sandwiches DIXIE SNAX, INC.
