BLUEJEANS ARE MEMORIES What exactly is a memory? It is special times and all those things involved. Memories have and will last a lifetime. What about those blue jeans? They never go out of style. Jeans just keep getting better from year to year. A student may wear bluejeans for all occasions . . . BLUEJEANS ARE MEMORIES. PROM ’82 WE’VE GOT TONIGHT” WEVE GOT TONIGHT” heralded April 13, 1982, as the Jr.-Sr. Prom took place at Fort Rucker Lake Lodge. The lodge was decorated in pastel shades of blue, pink and lavender. Flowers of all three colors were placed on each table. Silver stars hung from the ceiling. Bobby Owen, Junior class president, gave the welcome and John Anderson, Senior class president, gave the response. Tulip Champagne glasses, along with memory booklets, were presented by the Junior class officers to each Senior and Junior. The dance floor was then turned over to Doctor Funk, a Disc Jockey from WXLE who provided the music for the evening. The Skating Gorilla was the highlight of the night. April 13, 1982, was a night that will always be remembered for years to come. 12 Prom Prom 13 WOMANLESS BEAUTY CONTEST Geneva County High School's answer to Heaven, the Third Annual Womanless Beauty Contest, was held September 14, 1982. The contest proved to be very successful, and with some very interesting results. Mr. Willie Brown, the Master of Ceremonies, had the privilege of introducing each girl to the student body. The first half of the contest featured the beauties dressed in clothes to represent their favorite hobby, while the second half was devoted to evening gown competition. Second runner-up was Stacey Hawthorne, known that day as Helen Patricia Hornsby. Her favorite hobbies were aerobic exercising and football players. She wore a beautiful pink and silver dress in the evening gown competition. Christy Coota, or Anderson Fulford, received First place honors. She enjoys bareback riding and football players in her spare time. Christy was definitely as pretty as a picture when she appeared in her peach colored evening gown. The lovely of the loveliest for the 1982-83 contest was Melinda Two Toys, alias Rob Ward. She received a great response from the audience when she skated onto the stage and announced one of her hobbies to be, watching Coach Bennett walk . Could this be why she won the coveted title as Miss Ge. Co. Hi. 1982-83? One can only wonder. Other participants included Ron Adams, Don Bailey, Joey Pridgen, Terry Reynolds, David Dean, Keith Hatcher, and Jimmy Roy Hendrix. Womanless Beauty 15 Many new styles and fashions emerged at G.C.H.S. in 1983. They ranged from mini skirts to head bands. Blue jeans were in great demand for both males and females. The names of many designers could be seen stitched on the hip pockets of jeans. Adidas, Asahi, penny loafers, boots, Hush Puppies, Nikes, Whimsies, and Candies were the footwear fashions. In the jewelry line, Serpentine chains abounded on both males and females. Gold dipped leaves, sand dollars, floating hearts, initial charms, diamond rings, and earrings were also popular. Any cheerleader squad would love to go to a camp like this, right? Well, the next time you pass a Varsity Cheerleader in the halls of GCHS ask them about their vacations at A.C.A. A.C.A. is an American Cheerleader Academy in Fruitland Park, Florida. None of the cheerleaders or their sponsors had ever heard of Fruitland Park or A.C.A. so they consulted the map to find this cheerleader paradise. Having no way to get the girls, two sponsors, one principal, and a small child all the way to Fruitland Park, Mr. and Mrs. Randy Shields, Janie’s parents, let the girls use their Winnebago and headed for A.C.A. After driving for approximately seven hours, they entered the town of Fruitland Park and exited shortly thereafter without a trace of A.C.A. Determined to find this cheerleader heaven they turned around and stopped at the welcome station. After an observation made by Sherry Judah, they quickly discovered the welcome station was closed. So they drove a little farther and stopped at the next best place to obtain information — a Jr. Food Store! Sure enough they knew where to tell them to go. As the Winnebago turned down the narrow road that led to A.C.A., the girls started to worry. They passed a big, spooky, old church, an eerie graveyard, and a community filled with the older generation. Then at last, the gate to A.C.A.! Somehow the girls knew at once they wanted to go home. The grass was over knee high and blocked the view of the lake. The fire truck and ambulance were the first thing the girls saw as they drove through the gate. These vehicles looked as if they had been there so long they were attached to the concrete, and the buildings had words like Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines printed on them and were in bad need of painting. The girls stopped in front of the dining hall and went in to register. They were assigned to Army Cabins, told what time supper was served, and were sent to unpack. Upon inspection of the cabin the girls noticed that the door wouldn't lock. As a matter of fact, it wouldn't even close. That problem would have been easy to overlook had it not been for the roaches, spiders in the showers, the broken toilet seat and the bunk beds that looked as if they had been used in WW II. But trying to make the best of a bad situation, the girls looked forward to their delicious meal. But — you guessed it!! The food tasted as if it had been used in WW II also. The following days the girls followed a rigorous routine of cheerleader training from nine in the morning to nine at night, breaking only for lunch and supper. They learned new cheers, chants, and a pompom routine. They also made some new friends. On Thursday morning the girls participated in a competition with the other squads, each using material learned at camp and some cheers from home. On Thursday night there was a graduation ceremony in which each of the girls received a trophy for First Place, Most Spirit. On Friday morning the group said their not-so-sad farewells to A.C.A. and headed for Disney World. A great time was had by all at Disney World and a few of the girls can tell you for a fact that Coach Whitaker doesn't like Space Mountain! iV Varsity Cheerleaders Below: Below: Janie Shields and Kim Martin if is Kim Dean ZrnL Above: Rebecca Strickland — Captain, and Sherry Judah Varsity Cheerleaders 47 PEP RALLIES BOOST BUIJLDOG SPIRIT Top: Don Turner and other football players take an active part in the pep rallies. For a week during the summer, the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders attended a cheerleader clinic at North-view High School in Dothan. At the end of the week, competition was held. Only certain squads were asked to enter competition and GCHS’s Junior Varsity was one of them. After the competition, awards were given to squads for various things that were done during the week. GCHS Junior Varsity received top honors. Of numerous other squads from around the area, the GCHS squad was voted by the other girls for a special award called the Key to Spirit Award”. For that the girls received a plaque and a superior” ribbon. The GCHS squad also received ribbons for making District Competition, Overall Excellence, Most Improved, and a Spirit Stick for most spirit. In the past few years, the GECORAI.A has strayed from dedications because it is not the in” thing for yearbooks. But this year, we would like to say thank you to a more than dedicated member of the GCHS Administration, Mr. Mike Whitaker. Coach,” as he is sometimes called, often passes himself off as a gruff man, but inside this gruff man lies a person who is greatly concerned for each individual student’s education and welfare. So in breaking all set trends, thank you Coach Whitaker for your dedication and service to Geneva County High School. 14 Principal Administration 115 NEW FACES JOIN THE FACULTY AT OCHS Imogene Bailey — 3rd Grade Trudy Banister — Science Ricky Bennett — Science, Asst. Each student honored was selected by his teachers in their respective subject areas. Choices were based on grades, motivation, participation, and ability to apply previously learned concepts. Principal Whitaker presented to each student a bronze medallion upon which was engraved the subject area in which the student excelled. In addition, an invitation was extended to each of these students to attend an awards reception which was held at the NCO Club at Fort Rucker, Al. Other students receiving invitations were members of the Senior Honor Society and the top ten students of the 1982 graduating class. This event was sponsored by the Senior Honor Society and co-sponsored by SAFE and the Student N jncil. 118 Academics Banquet Left: Leona Abbie, Custodian Above: High School Lunchroom Ladies: Carol Korncgay, Evelyn Griffin, Marion Pridgen. Throughout junior high, students are taught the basics of grammar. Once a student reaches senior high, literature and writing skills are improved. The works of Shakespeare and Hawthrone are best remembered by high school stu -dents. SCHOOL MEDIA COMPOSITION Among the electives at GCHS, Journalism, or School Media Composition, is one of the better known. A J-Room student not only writes for the school newspaper, sells ads, or helps with the yearbook, but also must sell concessions. It is an honor to be a part of the Journalism class, but one must be willing to give of his time freely. HISTORY History, an elective and a requirement, is offered to all high school students. World Geography, U.S. Geography, World History, and Current Events are electives. For seniors, American Government and Economics is required. Juniors must take U.S. History, while Alabama History is required of ninth graders. Seventh and eighth graders must take General History and Civics. MUSIC This year at GCHS, a music apprecia -tion class was offered by the music department along with the band courses. In music appreciation, a student is taught the basics of music without playing an instrument. The GCHS marching and concert bands play a major role by performing at half time, presenting concerts, and competing in numerous contests. 122 Academics MATH For students who wish to work with a variety of number systems, the math department offers classes in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Business Math. These courses are electives. SCIENCE This year at GCHS a new science course was offered to high school students. To General Science, Biology I, Biology II, and Chemistry, Physics was added. Science is required in junior high but is an elective to senior high students. BUSINESS A student at GCHS may explore the business world throughout his high school years. At the junior high level, a student may take Business Exploration; then in senior high, B.O.E. I and B.O.E. II are offered. B.O.E. I is a two hour time block in which Typing I, General Business, and Business Math are taken. In the two hours of B.O.E. II, classes include Shorthand I and Accounting I. Individual classes in Accounting I and Consumer Math are also offered as electives. Academics 123 PHYSICAL EDUCATION In Physical Education, students not only exercise but are taught how to take care of their bodies. The program is designed to help physical skills and to teach good sportsmanship. DRIVER’S EDUCATION Driver's Education is a course taken in one semester — one six weeks of classroom studying and two sue weeks of actual driving. This course is offered to teach students skills and procedures of safe driving and is supervised by Ronny Blackstock. VOCATIONAL Vocation courses at GCHS are divided into two departments: Home Economics and Agriculture. The Home Economics department offers Family Living, Foods and Nutrition, Parenthood and Housing and Interior Design. The Agriculture Department provides courses in basic Agra Business followed by the Advanced Courses. Also offered to Juniors and Seniors, is the opportunity to attend the County Vocational facilities in Slocomb. Courses such as Commercial sewing, Marketing, Masonry, and Carpentry can be taken for three credits.
