Barbara Gilman I THIS WAS A YEAR OF NEW BEGINNINGS ADMINISTRATION COURSES SENIOR CLASS EXPERIENCE Each year brings nett hopes, experiences, frustrations, and disappointments. This one was no different. However, starting the school year under a new administration offered G.C.H.S. students an expectation of “things being different.” And different they were.'.' i Li TRIUMPHS • • SPIRIT RAND HONORS STUDENT HANDBOOK PRINTED PAPER SCHOLASTIC EXCELLENCE INCREASED SCHOOL ATTENDANCE The football team this y ear, though not triumphant on the scoreboard, was victorious in another way, They display ed great perseverance coupled with determination, and by so doing, gained the respect and support of the student body. Triumphant in every sense of the word was the G.C.H.S. Marching Bulldog Band. Besides outstanding performances given each Friday night, they also captured top honors at the Southeastern States Marching Band Festival. For the first time in twenty years, the school newspaper, the Ge-Co-Bugle, was printed, and there was also a student handbook. There were shining examples of scholastic excellence, too. The Valedictorian of the senior class achieved a grade point average of 96.19 and the top ten all had averages in the 90's. G.C.H.S. showed an increase in school attendance and while the other county schools were losing teacher units because of low attendance, we maintained our number of teaching units. There were many triumphant times in this school year. Some were the results of group effort, while others were the result of individual effort; but all. both great and small, served to promote a sense of pride. The mighty Bulldog mascot was taken captive and held hostage by the Slocum Red Tops. Serving as a symbol of spirit and pride, efforts to return the bulldog resulted in the speedy return from Slocomb within a day's time. DISAPPOINTMENTS SCHOOL VANDALISM FIGHTS LOSING FOOTBALL SEASON FINANCIAL PROBLEMS IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM Along with triumph, there was also disappointment. There were incidences of vandalism, theft, and fighting. The football team suffered a losing season of 0 and 10, and for a while there seemed a threat that the school might be closed due to a lack of funds. But, through it all, we managed to maintain the belief that things would get better. 4 HISTORY MAKING EVENTS REINSTATEMENT OF THE DRAFT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION THE TAKING OF AMERICAN HOSTAGES IN IRAN These were just a few of the history-making events that took place. This year saw events that promoted apprehension, promised hope, and brought a renewal of patriotism among Americans. I === for the first time in C.C.H.S. history, Student Council President resigned. Scott Wilkins vacated the office November, 1980. I STUDENT LIFE Student Life 7 Lori Glover FADS AND FASHIONS Students at G.C.H.S. saw many styles and fashions emerge this year. Through the influence of television shows like Dallas, the western look gained immense popularity. Stetson hats and cowboy boots were in great demand. Designer jeans were “in and the names of many famous designers could be seen stitched on the rear pockets of many young ladies’ jeans. Although the price of gold soared, serpentine chains, sand dollars, floating hearts and add-a-beads found themselves around the necks of both males and females. FRIENDSHIPS LIFE is a chronicle of friendship. Friends create the world anew each day. Without their loving care, courage would not suffice to keep hearts strong for life. HELEN KELLER During the course of the year many new friendships were made, and many old friendships were strengthened. These relationships were not only between students, many valuable friendships were established between students and teachers. it SCHOOL MEDIA COMPOSITION £sa f) o 1-eft: Glenda Zorn and him Brannon sell con cessions at recess. The Prom was a unique experience for many who had never attended a prom before. Music was provided by “Paradox, ” a band from Montgomery. At 8:00, the Junior Class President, Lori Glover, welcomed everyone to the Prom and Nigel Hamm, Senior Class President gave a response. From there, the Junior Class officers proceeded to give favors to the Junior and Senior class members. At the end of the Prom, the flower arrangements, used for table decorations, were presented to the Junior and Senior Class sponsors and to the Principal and Assistant Principal. April 18, 1980 — “Sharing the Night Together” — a date and a theme that will long be stored in the memories of GCHS Juniors and Seniors. The team was a very young and inexperienced onef yet the players put forth much enthusiasm. They always seemed to have an optimistic outlook on upcoming games regardless of the outcome of previous games. In each game they played hard and put their all into it. This team should be remembered for their never quitting attitudes — no matter what the outcome was. Although there were times when the spirit was dead. there were more times when the spirit was very much alive. The cheerleaders cheered at every pep rally, but at times they received help anywhere from pep talks, to football players as cheerleaders, to routines by the majorettes. With Mary Jordan as the squad captain, the cheerleaders began practicing and organizing for the upcoming season. Clinic was held in Hartford the week of July 25-29. Both Junior Varsity and Varsity participted in the clinic. During the months of practice, much preparation was put into the presentation of the pep rallies as well as boosting the morale on Friday nights. Students are encouraged to take this course during their sophomore year. Drivers’ Education consists of one six weeks of classroom studies and one six weeks of actual test driving with John Webber supervising. The purpose of this academic class is to teach students the fundamentals of safe driving. When one can say “I am a member of the Journalism class” one says it with pride and dignity. Limited to Juniors and Seniors, when a student signs up and is accepted to the Journalism class he must be prepared to work hard. Not only will he have the opportunity to help publish the yearbook and school newspaper, he will also have to help sell ads in the summer and work in the concession stand at recess. Being in Journalism gives a person the responsibility of learning to work together. The Home Economics department offers many courses that are open to both male and female students. In the 9th and 10th grades Home Economics I and II are offered. These are two con-sective courses in basic domestic fundamentals, encompassing food, clothing, home management and relationships. In the 11th and 12th grades there are four one semester courses offered. They are nutrition, family living, housing and parenthood. There are four progressive levels of Agri-business offered beginning in the 9th grade. These are Agri-business I, II, III, and IV. These courses teach a variety of skills including, welding, woodwork, livestock, farming and management. Each student is required to do one project depending upon the facilities available to the individual. 60 Business courses are elective at G.C.H.S. When a student registers for his sophomore year, he has the alternative to sign up for Typing 1 or BOE I. If a student takes BOE I, he may continue through his Junior and Senior years to take BOE II and III. Other electives in the field of business are Accounting I and II, Bookkeeping, Typing II, Office Procedures, and Business Math. History is an important part in the academic Held at G.C.H.S. In the 9th grade a student takes Alabama History and Civics. Sophomores are not required to take any history, but World History and World Geography are offered as an elective. American History is required in the llth grade. Finally, American Government and Economics are required courses for the Seniors. Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is one of the most important classes at G.C.H.S. today. It should be emphasized because our society is forever changing and physical fitness is a necessary product of these changes. The HPER classes are a necessity to healthy lives for the present and the future. These classes must contribute to the mental, emotional, and social aspects of living as well as physical fitness for a happy and active life. Sports activities shape young bodies and minds as well as shape the tone and spirit of our country. English, a required course in the curriculum at G.C.H.S. is offered in grades seven through twelve in a variety of forms. Junior high English is taught mainly in the form of grammar. In Senior high English, students are familiarized with such names as Shakespeare, Milton, Longfellow, Hawthorne, and others. The grammar learned in Junior high is then well appreciated by Juniors and Seniors as they utilize grammar in their writing assignments. Academics 61 The music department at G.C.H.S. is divided into two categories. An instrumental program and a choral program. The instrumental program is multi-faceted. It ranges from the fifth grade beginner band program to the high school marching and concert bands. The marching band performs during half-time at all football games and represents the school and city in various civic functions. The concert band gives two concerts a year and competes in state music festivals. The choral program is a new program begun only this year at G.C.H.S. It meets during first time block each morning. Its purpose is to give students a basic knowledge of music fundamentals. The group gives two concerts annually — a Christmas concert held in conjunction with the band and a spring “pop” concert. Science is offered through a wide variety of courses at G.C.H.S. Junior high students are required to take science in the seventh and eighth grades. Beyond this level only one additional course is required. Among the courses offered are Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Human Science. 62 Actdemics Mathematics is a basic part of one’s daily life. The math curriculum at G.C.H.S. is composed of Business Math, General Math, Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Each of these courses, in some way, helps to prepare a student for college and also for the complicated world of business. The field of mathematics is continuing to broaden and many opportunities are being opened for students who pursue their math career to its fullest extent.
