As all supplies were being packed into trunks and trucks, Juniors began to realize rhe hard work which toy in store for them during rhe next few hours. After all were safely on rhe roads to Fort Rucker, it was discovered that tensions caused certain drivers to grow lead feet in order to arrive sooner. The Lake Lodge seemed to be rhe perfect spot for dreams to come true. The Lodge was located against a beautiful Lake Tholocco setting that reminded one of rhe dreamy type of horizon as depicted on rhe Prom's rheme design. For rhe young or heart, there was a playground, complete with swings, slide, see saws, and merry-go-round! As decorating rook its roll on rhe Juniors, patience began to thin down and tempers began to rise. Everyone was too intoxicated with excitement to realize rhe extent of their animosity. This intoxication caused dubious reactions by the Juniors toward their efforts at decorating. Out, by 12:30, it was decided that all that could be done, hod been done, so each headed his separate way to make preparations for rhe big nighr our. Thar Wednesday nighr, when people began arriving, rhe moonlight seemed to set off oil rhe Juniors efforts for a successful Prom. The soft pastel colors of blue, pink, yellow, and green helped to highlight rhe Silver Dali. The pictures were taken in front of a beautiful blue fountain surrounded by green plants. Promptly at 8 PM, Vann Outlaw, Junior Class President, gave rhe Welcoming Speech. Do Hatfield, Senior Class President responded with gratitude. Drandy snifters, along with memory booklets, were presented to each Junior and Senior. Turning rhe floor over to rhe band from Enterprise, Exodus, rhe dreamy mood was continued as rhe band dedicated rhe first song, New Orleans Ladies, to rhe Senior Class. As rhe nighr progressed, rhe crowd dwindled, bur a few stayed on to hear rhe last song played. This special nighr when everyone rook their chance to dream will linger in rhe minds of many throughout their years. Top Eleven (continued) Even though 1980 was a unique year in almosr all respects, some old traditions hold through without exception. And no matter how hard one tries to prevent it, Spring Fever is absolutely inevitable. Everything is so beautiful and exciting that it can nor be suppressed! A lor of exciting things happen in spring - for some, baseball is the thing,- for others, things like cheerleader tryouts, the Miss Hartford pageant, or maybe receiving their yearbooks may be the highlight - and nothing is ever disappointing. The first doy, always rhe most difficult ro survive, found many srudenrs sleepwalking or eighr a m., bur certain loud noises soon awoke them. Eleven am. come os such o relief rhor many rushed home exhausted. All attempts ro rest were in vain, though, as rhe two hour lunch break was just barely enough rime ro sir down and ear. One p.m. found oil 63 bods or rhe ban-droom working with rheir individual sections until rwo-rhirry p.m. Then, ir was bock in rhe bondroom ro discover whor had been learned. Four p.m. again come os a relief, bur without many unusual expectations. The band srudenrs had already realized rhor six p.m. would come roo soon and marching would begin. Nine p.m. became rhe only rime rhar rhe srudenrs were assured of a chance ro rest. Yer, with oil rhe trials and rribularions, there were rewords for rhe rrue and faithful. Good practices sometimes meant early dismissals. Also, os band camp come ro a dose, rhe srudenrs found rhor they would arrend one day less than expected, thanks ro o teachers' meeting; bur before ir was all over, an excellent performance for rhe band boosters earned rheir praise and approval along with another early dismissal. Regardless of common belief, rhe end of band camp does nor mean rhar everything will be a joy ride from then on. Actually, rhe work hos jusr begun. All through marching season, rhe band srudenrs pracrice every Tuesday and Thursday nighr for two hours. Then comes Christmas Concert season, with extra practices for or least two weeks before rhe concert. Finally Spring Concert season arrives. Spring is rhe rime for rhe srudenrs ro bring our all rheir hidden, along with rhe obvious, musical rolenrs. Extra practices begin rhe very first week after Christmas vacation ends. As conresr rime approaches, these practices increase. And of course, there are weekly section practices regardless of rhe season. Well, it's true. The Journalism Class starts work in the summer hear in order to get all their ods sold for the yearbook and hopefully start the road to success The way is nor always easy, and usually long and hard, bur the spirit of unity keeps them all together and basically happy. But, their work does nor stop when school starts, ir actually increases. Other than selling advertisements for the yeobook, they must sell advertisements for the paper, write articles for the paper and publish the paper every month. The responsibility of financing the paper and yearbook also rests on them and they accomplish this through such things as selling concessions every day or recess and corsages at Homecoming. Bur, the relief of on occasional party helps keep things smooth. Under the guidance of Mrs. Barbara Gilman, the Journalism Class has learned to accomplish its goals and to constantly struggle for perfection. As rhe ream prepared for their third game, everyone was anticipating another glorious victory over Abbeville. And for rhe second rime in o row there was no disappointment. Then rhe week of September 28, rhe spirit at GCHS reached an incredible high, it was rime for GCHS to play their biggest rivals - without rhe home field advantage. The trip to Slocomb seemed long and dreary for only six miles! Hartford received rhe kick off only to make rhe biggest mistake of the night. The receiver fumbled and Slocomb recovered deep in their own zone! Bur, the Bulldog defense held strong and after trying unsuccessfully several rimes for a touchdown, Slocomb decided to go for a field goal - and made it! This did nor discourage rhe Bulldogs though, os they come back to hold rhe Bed Tops with their three point score, and successfully drive two touchdowns in for rhe win. The next week found GCHS high on a cloud with two conference wins, one nonconference win ond only one nonconference loss, which did nor affect rhe chances of going to store at all. Bur after travelling to Dale County rhor Friday, GCHS found themselves on o raincloud. Dole County hod pulled ahead early in rhe game and kept rhe lead to rhe very end. Disappointment was nor quire rhe word to use because Hartford hod suffered its first conference loss. Despite rhe loss to Dole County, Hartford was confident of a victory over Geneva. Still, Geneva pur up a good fight. The gome ended with a defensive penalty against Geneva and rhe score was tied. Over rime was mandatory. Another conference win mode rhe Bulldogs work solely toward rhe Store Ploy-offs. Homecoming Week! the will to win was stronger than ever before. Everyone wanted Homecoming to be extra special and a victory would moke it just that. Of course, rhe Bulldogs would nor want to disappoint anyone and so Houston County suffered another loss or rhe hands of GCHS. The Bulldogs went into rhe next week with four conference wins, and o raring of second only to Headland in rhe conference. The chance to prove themselves as full-blooded champions had finally come as Hartford traveled to Headland to rake over rhe conference championship. Once again, rhe Bulldogs refused to be beaten and can our on top! With only two more games left in regular season of play, both conference, GCHS only had to win one to have their place in rhe Stare Playoffs secured The next week found GCHS taking on rhe Rehoberh Rebels. Since rhe Bulldogs were determined to go to Store, rhe game was a cinch and rhe Bulldogs had achieved rheir goal. Even though a loss ro Cottonwood the following week was discouraging, GCHS looked forward ro rhe opportunity ro rake on Florala once again in rhe playoffs. November 16 was a history-making day at Hartford. Since rhe first year of Stare Playoffs, GCHS hod never quire made it ro them, and rhe thought of it hod always been quite out- landish. Bur now, it seemed quire natural. The game itself was a rough battle-ground. Although rhe Bulldogs received home field advantage, rhe Florala Wildcats edged our on top once again ro leave rhe Bulldogs slightly disappointed. Although Hartford never quire made it ro rhe top, rhe Bulldogs held a record of 7-3, something of which ro be proud. The dedication of head coach Donnie Chesreen, who received rhe honor of conference coach of the year, and assistant coaches Buddy Da-singer, John Webber, and Tom Corr along with rhe entire ream made Hartford proud ro proclaim that it was rhe home of rhe Mighty Bulldogs. innie Chesreen- head cooch Lee Chancy relaxes a moment before a gome Football Conr. After their return home, they continued their hard work and practice as they prepared new dance routines for entertainment or pep rallies. The cheerleaders always had their hands full. The big black arrack coached by the white shadow, Tom Carr, starred its season with a blast. Practice began only one week before the first game, bur that did nor deter the Bulldogs. Their ability and will to win was clearly evident. In the Christmas Tournament held at Geneva, the Bulldogs held strong for four straight nights until they were finally co-vercome by Geneva. However, after playing so unrelenrless-ly during that week, the fans were proud of the 2nd place trophy which hod been so just- ly earned. Baskerball is a sport of unending action and excitement.
