For some, school activities had already begun. Football, band, and cheerleader practices started in early August as well as the locker sales and paper and yearbook sales. As everyone got back into the swing of things, most noticed 1979 was going to be a Special Year. 2 3 marked the end of a decade-a new beginning for some, a joyous end for others. It was a year full of joys ... of sorrows ... a year when new people joined the old ... a year used for learning and growing ... a year spent with someone special or just being a part of the crowd. The beginning of just another day. Well, not really. For the students of GCHS it was the beginning of school. As everyone in high school found their homeroom and renewed friendships and the mothers of the elementary school children left them to their new teachers, a certain excitement filled the air. Teachers once again distributed forms, forms, and more forms to complete or take home. Assemblies were held for Mr. Jenkins to welcome us back and to introduce new teachers who were just finding out how hectic school could be. With the new combinations locks on the lockers, a few students were tardy for the first class of the day, but by the end of the day most had conquered the problem. As recess passed by and second, third, and fourth periods were finished, most students were back in the swing of things. Lunch finally arrived and seventh graders discovered high school food was no different from elementary school food. The day progressed. FINALLY 2:50 p.m. arrived. No, it was not the ending of just another day, but the ending of the first day of school. Third grader's parents help them find their room. In high school, students learn what happened during the summer. 10 (( “This One's For You was presented at 8:00 p.m. on the night of April 13, 1978. Held at Lake Lodge, Ft. Rucker, Alabama, the prom was one of the most spectacular events of the year. The lodge was decorated with blue and white tissue balls, silver and blue rotating columns, and a glass mirror ball that was the focal point. Mark Fondren, Junior class president, gave the welcome and Senior class president, Cindy Ward responded. Programs and glasses were presented to the Juniors and Seniors by the Junior class officers. After the presentation of gifts to the Junior class sponsors, the dance floor and refreshment tables were opened. The Ivy Brothers provided the music. As the evening came to a close, most felt it was the end of a perfect day. Juniors spent the day at Lake Lodge decorating for the Prom. Hank Birdsong is hanging stars from the ceiling. 12 Dancing and delicious refresh- 13 The end of 1979-the ending of a decade. Moments that will never happen again, but memories that will live forever. Opportunities that will not come again-the last chance for doing yesterday's jobs-the last time to cause a smile. A Senior's last football game, the last beauty contest, the fast yearbook published, and the last graduation-all, the last events of the 70's. As the 70's end with many great memories, the new decade begins with a future of new horizons that will hold many new adventures. (CrnruiV'minliililtihiW’honl Senior class beauties. Bert Daum and Vernita Sanders look forward to the important events during the last week of school. Sherry Galloway and Hank Birdsong still manage a smile at the end of a hard day. Many precious memories will be left in the yearbook as friends and classmates leave their marks in it. Wanda Holland writes her farewell note to a friend. 15 FADS and FASHION Blue jeans come in all styles and sizes. Glenda Neal wears the latest shoulder purse. From tennis to boots, all kind of shoes are popular. 16 What's in in 1979? What are the” things to do, the places to be, and the styles to wear? Hartford is a place with many different ways of being in”. On Friday or Saturday nights one can deck out and go to a nice restaurant and eat or just bum around in town. If the town ride is chosen, most just ride around and around Dinky's and occasionally through town by the E Z Way. If that gets boring, a quick trip to Dothan can be taken to check out” the movies. Favorites like Grease , “Animal House”, and Hooper are usually on at one of the ten movie houses. If a date is not in order or one just desires to stay home, Saturday Night Live , The Midnight Special”, and Love Boat provide good entertainment. As the weekend passes and school must be attended, the decision of what to wear has to be made. Strait-legged blue jeans and large shirts, tee-shirts and jeans, or dress pants are what most wear. Tennis and track shoes are still around along with the new yo-yos and step in shoes. On cold winter days, boots help keep the feet warm. After school most GCHS students listen to WPFM or WIRB for the latest Top 40. Artists like Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, the Commodores, ARS, and Dolly Parton keep us singing through the day with songs like Champagne Jam , Paradise by the Dashboard Lights , Kiss You All Over , and Get Off . When afternoon turns to night and homework is done, the tube is on again. Programs such as Three's Company , Mork and Mindy , M A S H”, and Charlie's Angles always manage to offer entertainment with their superstars, Jacklyn Smith, Paul Michael Glaser, and Shaun Cassidy. Fads and fashions of 1979- our music, our styles, our ways- different, yes, but always ours. Motion picture soundtracks and live recordings are some of the most popular albums on the market. Senior girls wear tee-shirts proclaiming SENIORS DO IT BETTER . Gecorala Beauty Contest The annual Gecorala Beauty Contest was September 25, 1978. Five girls from each grade, nine through twelve, were chosen by their classmates to represent their grade. Mistress of Ceremonies was Jeanna Brannon, Editor of the Gecorala. Rita Burch, Assistant Editor, presented roses to the winners and Greg Yeomans and Starla Dean provided the musical background. The judges were Miss Leigh Palmer, Miss Jane Ezell, and Mrs. Judy Harris. Senior participants: Mary Lynn Dorriety. Susan Loftin, Sandra Butler, Sherry Galloway. Alan Wood takes his hat off to Bulldog Lorenzo Hilliard. Filled with excitement, we eagerly awaited October 6. The whole week was a build-up for this special event. What was it? HOMECOMING 1978! From Monday till Friday night the Bulldogs and Bulldog fans got ready for the game against Geneva. Events, such as Grease Day, Hats Off to Bulldogs Day, and Purple and Gold Day, were planned for this special week. A room decorating contest took place with the Senior homerooms winning all the prizes. Mrs. Brannon's room won first place, Mrs. Downing’s room won second, and Coach Chesteen's room won third. Thursday night a bonfire, behind the gym, attracted enthusiastic students. By Friday that great” Bulldog spirit was soaring. School was dismissed at 12:00 p.m. for the annual parade. The band, cars, and floats made the parade a great success. After a pep rally on the square, everyone left with eager expectations of the night's game. Susan Loftin was crowned Homecoming queen in pre-game activities held at Dixie Howell Stadium. At long last, the game began. With the spirit that had mounted over the week, the Bulldogs were confident of a victory. The game was won 46-8. After the game victory, everyone was ready to celebrate. A disco dance in the lunchroom was sponsored by the H-Club. John Dancer, WPFM DJ, played the Top 40 till 1:00 a.m. With homecoming week over, everyone tired, and the Bulldogs’ spirit high, plans were started for the next big game. Queens chosen, floats built, and pre-game activities practiced. GCHS has an unique way of chosing its queen. Senior football players escort the girl of their choice, in grades ten through twelve, on the field Friday night. All Senior girls asked on the field are eligible for Homecoming Queen. The other girls are eligible for attendant in their respective grades. The student body, grades ten through twelve, votes on the girls for queen and attendants. The votes are counted secretly, so no one knows the results until they are announced. Junior High, Middle School, and Elementary School attendants are chosen the week before Homecoming. Mary Carol Black sponsored by Jeff Smith. 28 Susan Capron sponsored by Hank Birdsong. Laura Sorrells sponsored by Bo Hatfield. Twanna Dawson sponsored by Ricky Grider. Marilee Owens sponsored by Greg Frederick. Vanassa Anderson sponsored by Earl Sanders Paula Brown sponsored by Bo Anderson. 29 Varsity Cheerleaders Cheerleaders-the loudest girls in school. That may be true, but only because they yell for the Bulldogs. Every May, girls compete for a position on the GCHS cheerleader squad. The student body votes for eight girls, and they become our varsity cheerleaders. The 1978-79 cheerleaders, with the help of their sponsor Norma Galloway, have worked extremely hard to make the football and basketball seasons a success. During the summer they attended a USCA Cheerleader Clinic at the University of West Florida to learn new yells and stunts. While there, they received five ribbons and a special plaque for their performance. Lisa Peters and Deborah Outlaw earned a Top Ten Cheerleader plaque. Upon returning home they began working on pom-pom and glove routines for the pep rallies. With the help of David Blakeney, the cheerleaders and others made signs for the football games. As school began the cheerleaders made spirit badges, made up skits, and organized pep rallies and bonfires. Every Friday night, one could find them on the sidelines yelling for the Bulldogs. Whether winning or losing, these cheerleaders kept the Bulldog's spirit high during the year. Felicia Seay, Donna Davis, and Twanna Dawson portray yellow jackets during a pep rally. 1978-79 Varsity Cheerleaders: Mary Jordan, Donna Davis, Felicia Seay. Band And The Best Goes On All through the long hot days at the end of August until graduation night, the GCHS band keeps the beat going. Most people think that band ends when football season does, but for the band students there are six more months. The band practices long hard hours during and after school to work up the performances seen on Friday nights. November 4 the band participated in the Enterprise Marching Band Festival and received a rating of good. As football season ends, Christmas music is taken from the shelves and preparation for the Christmas concert is made. The Christmas concert was held December 14. As school resumes after the holidays, band students start practicing for All-County, All-State, and Solo and Ensemble. All-County band was held January 13 and thirteen students from GCHS were selected. During the month of March, the band enters District Contest competition and if it receives a one rating, competes in the State Concert Contest in April. While working on the three numbers for district contest, the band also rehearses for the annual Spring concert. As school draws to a close, the band practices “Pomp and Circumstance” to play for the Seniors on graduation night. The marching band is composed of the playing members, the drum majorette, the majorettes, and the color guard. During the summer, Nancy Enfinger, Barbara Boyd, and Donna Enfinger attended a camp in Gainsville, Florida to learn new drills and new routines for the color guard. The majorettes attended a Heart of Dixie Camp at Auburn University. Other members of the marching band attended camp at the University of Alabama. M Clarinets: Front: Denise Hall. Teresa Enfinger. After learning grammar and how to write correctly, the next step in English is literature. In Senior English, all the knowledge gained in the twelve years of English is used to complete the term paper. Science H2O, NaCl, Bilaterial symmerty. This and much more is common knowledge of students who take science courses. This year a new course, Biology II, was added to the science department. General science, Chemistry, and Biology I were also offered. History Government and Economics, American and Alabama History, Civics, and World Geography are all offered by the GCHS history departmet. By taking these courses students can learn about our country as well as the rest of the world. Ricky Franklin works with a microscope. Kim Martin and Chuck Hartzog study for a test in American History. In Chemistry one has to use many different chemicals. Mary Carol Black tries to make water from hydrogen and oxygen. 42 Business And Math Business The Business department of GCHS offers courses such as typing, shorthand, and accounting. This year, BOE, a two hour business course was added. Students going into business or secretarial school find these courses very useful. Mathematics Calculators, graph paper, and compasses are all tools used in Math. From general math through trig, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing are still the basic skills needed. Mrs. Peters helps Brenda Simpkins and Lisa Peters with an accounting problem. Shorthand students practice reading shorthand from the chart. Mrs. Downing explains to her trig class the difference between cos and tan. . 43 Vocational Learning how to cook, sew and raise a family are part of what one learns in Home Economics. Ag teaches boys how to farm, drill and weld, and work with wood. Ag students make many things during the year as projects. Home Ec students had a pretend wedding and learned how to macram'e. Mrs. Whitehead, from Merle Norman, gave Home Ec students a facial. Mr. Dean helps Mark Coe make a water trough from a barrel. Mr. Dean s 4th Period Ag class. Before Christmas. Home Ec classes made ornaments. 45 I Cosmologists showed Home Ec students the newest styles in hair cuts. Physical Education One of the state's required courses, P.E. is a combination of work and play. After taking notes on first aid or the muscles of the body, students are likely to play volleyball, basketball, or badmitton. In spring, softball and football are a type of physical activity. 46 Connie Carter prepares to serve the ball during a volleyball game. Bus Drivers Every morning and every afternoon the responsibility of getting people to and from school becomes that of the bus drivers. From flat tires to getting stuck in a ditch, the bus driver faces hazards unknown to most. GCHS has sixteen buses that make runs this year. Mike Whitaker is in charge of the buses and their drivers. Shall I write a receipt?” Some Juniors found a hidden art -salesmanship. Several thought they would not be able to sell a dime for five cents! But, they were genuinely surprised. This year the Junior Class’s magazine sales goal of $4802 was surpassed by $461.21. And they thought they didn’t have it in them. But what’s all the money for? The PROM, of course. Juniors were ecstatic with hopes and plans. They were determined to prove that they could host a Jr.-Sr. Prom just as good as those in the past. Amidst all of the excitement was another class tradition, ordering school rings. Juniors were given their selection packets early and everyone noticed little yellow bands wrapped around these persons fingers. The class met with Balfour sales representative, Bo” Davidson, to finally order these long cherished rings. Still Juniors had a full year of academics. The Eleventh Grade is reputed to be the toughest year of high school, and many students discovered this the hard way. But under the guidance of three wonderful sponsors, Mrs. Barbara Gilman, Mr. Perry Stinson, and Mrs. Norma Galloway, this class emerged as the seniors of next year. Yes, this was the first year of Senior High for these students, and it was one that will be long remembered. This may not be their ultimate goal, but it is one worth no- ticing. Sophomores are often overlooked, but never should be. They worked hard to survive those years of school, and have just begun to receive their due recognition. This was the year that younger ones began looking to Sophomores for guidance and friendship. Sophomores are no longer just another group of children. They have their own unique class, with reason to be proud. This year marks the beginning of their leadership at high school. After losing the first game to Florala, the Bulldogs built a string of victories that was only dented by one team. As the Bulldog's defense, “The Junkyard Dogs , and the offense got it all together, it appeared as if the 'Dogs might go all the way. As the Bulldogs started on their way to the County Championship by defeating Samson, people began to notice the team. The most important game of the season, to the fans—Hartford vs. Slocomb—gave the Bulldogs homefield advantage. The game was hard fought and at the end of regulation play neither team had scored. In overtime, the Red Tops received the ball first and scored a TD. As they tried for the extra point, Mark Fondren got a hand on the ball, making it go wide. With the score 0-6 the Bulldogs got their turn. Pete Neal passed to David Bailey for six points and then was called on to boot the extra point. As tension mounted, Neal kicked and it was good. The Bulldogs added a jewel to their crown and started getting ready for Geneva and the County Championship. Geneva was no trouble for the 'Dogs and they came from the game a 46-8 winner. Hartford shut out their next two opponents by scoring a total of 55 points in the games. The Hartford vs. Rehobeth game determined whether or not the Bulldogs would be state bound. Behind at the half, the Bulldogs came back into the game and scored two quick touchdowns. As the game drew into the final seconds, it seemed the Bulldogs had reached their goal. With only twelve seconds remaining, Rehobeth kicked a fieldgoal and the game ended Hartford 14—Rehobeth 16. Disappointed fans returned home, proud of the way the team had played. In the final game of the season against Cottonwood, David Neal scored five times helping the Bulldogs win 45-34. The Bulldogs ended the season with an eight and two record. The brilliant playing of the offensive and defensive squads and the coaching of Donnie Chesteen, Jim Butler, Tom Carr, and John Webber will long be remembered with pride in the Town of Hartford.
