yj ’ U We Celebrate the Past in the spirit of seventy-six There was an enormous force which strengthened the colonies, which exists today, and which has carried America through its great history. That force is known to us all to be the Spirit of ’76.” It is a SPIRIT OF LIBERTY and the knowledge that one man’s freedom is more important than anything else on earth. uoo f- 11 ''I f k II!!!!!i ll! ®. 1( MlliMiiyB '! .y.w' '• ; 11 |ii, itlHUullVWf!IIS At• i.Vip !' r ilill l i'i'Wt i ■ ■ 1 ll,i:,l!l ,'1, !lSp i I. i: I- k V M Vf Iwm. ■1 iiniii. ‘fU , A ' ' ‘fXlIll jitf. It is the SPIRIT OF FRONTIER — of not fearing to so where man has not reached. Benjamin Franklin George ashington Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton James Madison John Haneoek It is the SPIRIT OF IMUMDl AUSM — acknow ledging a birthright of opportunity and freedom drawn from the strength of our fathers. Indeed the SPIRIT OF ’76’ was, and is, many things, each of which has been a building block of our national greatness. Our country grew on that spirit and prospered on that spirit. When all else fails it is that spirit that will be there to guide us and keep us strong. In the SPIRIT OF SEVENTY SIX, I was born on July 4 and the Declaration of Independence is my birth certificate. The bloodlines of the world run in my veins, because I offered freedom to the oppressed. I am many things; and many people. I am the nation.” I am 200 million living souls — and the ghost of millions who have lived and died for me. I am Nathan Hale and Paul Revere. I stood at Lexington and fired the shot heard around the world. I remember the Alamo, the Maine, and Pearl Harbor. When freedom called I answered and stayed until it was over, over there. I am big. I sprawl from the Atlantic to the Pacific . . . three million square miles throbbing with industry. 1 am forest, field, mountain and desert. I am quiet villages — and cities that never sleep. I am Babe Ruth and the World Series. I am 130,000 schools and colleges, and 320,000 churches where my people worship God as they think best. I am a ballot dropped in a box, the roar of a crowd in a stadium, and the voice of a choir in a cathedral. 19 20 Yes, I am the nation, and these are the things that I am. I was conceived in freedom and God willing in freedom I will spend the rest of my days. May I possess always the integrity, the courage and strength to keep myself unshackled to remain a citadel of freedom and a beacon of hope to the world. This is my wish, my goal, my prayer in this year of seventy six — 200 years after I was horn. Happy Birthday, America! Best SENIOR CLASS ever!!! 33 34 The Fonz splits the scene — Charlie is caught in his normal position! Sweet and innocent Jeff, my foot still aches from the last dance!I It’s graduation and it’s unbelievable that I’m here. They'll call my name in a few minutes, and I’ll walk up to receive my diploma . . . where do I go from there? I’ve always had the security of the school routine and its activities, surrounded by the friends I was so familiar with. Now we’ll all be going in different directions, and I wonder how long it will be before the memories that meant so much start to fade. After twelve years of this you would think I would be ready to move on, but I feel like I’m leaving a part of me behind. Maybe that’s good though, because I really have changed in the twelve years that I’ve been here. Well, pretty soon they’ll get to my name. Then I’ll be up there, and it’ll be all over. In a way, I guess everything's really just beginning. Are you sure this is right? Wonder what caught their eye! 35 IN APPRECIATION . . . understanding faculty member ready to listen to you, the student ... a man always willing to help ... a man of his word ... a man always willing to give that extra effort. . . such is the person — Hiram Phillips.
