As the years march on, people and places change. As we view this shifting pattern, we are reminded of the many scenes that are so real and dear to each of us. It is to these memories that The Genevan belongs. The Genevan is a memory book, a book that is filled with the events, the friends, the buildings to which we have grown so accustomed. We like to look back on this scene, and in our minds it will never change. We recall happy times: the friendly chats in the Brig and in the Lounge, the many sports events, the holi- day cheer. We remember also the hard work we've done: the all-too-frequent tests, the never-ending number of term papers, those frequent pop,' quizzes. But most of all when we recall these days, we remember the friendli- ness and the school spirit of each Genevan. We hope that this yearbook will bring back many of these warm memories. YY -,:,R..' 2? l ' V -V5 v- 7 .I Q We, students of Geneva College, are honored and take deep pride in dedicating the 1963 Genevan to Dr. Johannes Vos, the chairman of our Bible depart- ment. Throughout his service at Geneva, he has shown understanding and inspirational leadership to the many students with whom he has come in contact. In many ways Dr. Vos has influenced our lives by imparting to us the Christian ideals connected with Geneva. As he conducts his classes, his spirit and witty hu- mor keeps his students from the drudgery of a dull class. With his sincere, direct approach to his students, he shares with them a respect for learning as well as the qualities which are essential to make our lives vi- tal. His handling of different situations with intelli- gence and patience have helped us immeasurably. Un- knowingly Dr. Vos has created a warm and lasting impression of himself and his conception of the ideals of education. For these reasons we of the Genevan dedicate this yearbook to Dr. Johannes Vos. DEDICATION SP1 'fl' 11 T -e -.' 6 .. ,- z' .P .. ' 0 ,. v fe 'L iw- - A ' - 'A Y .' Grady Spires Dormitory Coffee Hour. 6 Spiritual Emphasis Week was created at Geneva for the purpose of enhancing the religious life of individ- ual students. The services this year were conducted by the noted Dr. T. Grady Spires. He spoke in chapel, at evening meetings, and held cotlee hours in each of the dormi- tories. He attempted to instruct and inform the stu- dents in all phases of life, acting as counselor, min- ister and friend. In this series of meetings, Dr. Spires placed con- siderable emphasis on the potential influence and lead- ership of the youth of today. He accentuated the ne- cessity for straight thinking and his informal discus- sions added to the understanding of those attending the meetings. We appreciate the efforts of Dr. Spires and Rev. McMillan in creating this opportunity for constructive thinking and spiritual emphasis. is g ffl L. J Bakari Mwanjoha John Nganga FRICAN SCHOL RSHIP PROGRAM For the past two years it has been the privilege of Geneva College to share its educational program and traditions with two African students. In turn these students, Bakari Mwanjoha from Tanganyika and John Nganga from Kenya, have contributed their thoughts and opinions to our college and country. It was for this mutual benefit that the African scholarship program was orig- inated by the United States government. The effect of this program will no doubt become increasingly reciprocal as it is further developed. The program provides for an additional student from one of the African nations to attend Geneva each year. These students are chosen by a competitive exam. lt is an honor for both the student and the educational institute to be chosen. L51 1 'Q' A .1 Cru P 5 l -if ' ' f' 'Q , N , K -Q mfr, Kip, 1. .X , . There comes a moment when we leap from the potter's clay and scale the battlements of time and eternity. It is the zero hour that comes to all of us, the inevitable moment when we must give up everything we possess except those things we give away in service to humanity. These things are returned to us in that hour of awe and multiplied. The inevitable moment came to our friend, a master in his profession and an active member of our faculty on Monday, July 30, 1962. He had a passion for public and private duty which we may well emulate for the betterment and enrichment of ourselves. He worked hard, loved and laughed often. He always had a voice vibrant with gladness for every noble sentiment and a song ringing with approval for every worthy deed. In memory of his good works and as a token of our esteem, we, of the Genevan, bow our heads in silent meditation and in the majesty of this silence, we breathe a prayer of comfort for his family and for the advancement of those things, for and to which, he gave his life so generously. 8 The Reverend Mr. David M. Carson, Head of the Political Science Department of Geneva College, was selected and honored as Father of the Year during half time ceremonies at the annual Father's Day foot- ball game on October 26, 1962. A graduate of Geneva, Mr. Carson earned his Masters Degree at the University of Pennsylvania and was graduated from the Reformed Presbyterian The- ological Seminary. He became a member of the Ge- neva faculty in 1946. Mr. Carson is respected and admired by students and associates alike. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject matter covered, make his classes in- teresting, stimulating, and enjoyable. One is constantly anticipating examples of the well known Carson wit. Our Father of the Year is recognized as a real friend by all the students who know him. He shows a personal concern for their problems and is always will- ing to listen and to lend help in any way possible. FATHER OF THE YEAR 0 R PRESIDE T The duties of a college president are as numerous and as varied as the courses offered at Geneva, and Dr. Clarke far surpasses the responsibilities required of him. With such outstanding qualities as leadership, determination, sincerity, and ability, our President em- bodies the ideals of the college and maintains her standards. Although he has many weighty matters to handle and a busy schedule, Dr. Clarke continues to take an active interest in the student body. His cheery Hello', is always welcomed. His intense interest in the Geneva tradition and in the individual student has won for him the respect of every Genevan. To the Class of 1963: Although it is a bleak winter day as this message is being written, the snow will soon disappear and the time for your graduation will be at hand. I-think that progress has been made in a number of areas at Geneva during your years on campus. You members of the Class of 1963 have made important contributions to the life of the College, and we congratulate you upon your accom- plishments to date. As you complete your work at Geneva and go on to assume additional responsibilities, our hope for you is that your lives will be rewarding and that they will ever reflect the purpose expressed in the College Motto: Pro Christo et Patria. May you enjoy God's richest blessings in the years which lie ahead. Then come Geneva's sons, ne'er let the glad chorus fail. . . Sincerely yours, 5.9.4. Q .QQMIL Edwin C. Scott Bliss was named to the post of assistant to the President. Mr. Bliss was graduated from Geneva in 1939. Prior to being ap- pointed to this post, he was connected with industry and also served on the College Board of Trustees. His main job has been to help handle any special as- signments concerning Geneva College's development program. A small college necessarily needs a faculty and ad- ministration which is closely knit with the student body. Mr. Bliss's friendly and congenial attitude has fit into this relationship. Along with his experience and educa- tional background, he is always thinking of what is best for Geneva. We are glad to know that we have a man like W. The members are elected by the Board of Cor- porators and are responsible to them. These Trustees work with the College Administra- tion to carry out a high scholastic program in keeping with the ideals of Christian principles. The final de- cisions and approvals of major problems and of needs of the College are made by the members. Various committees carry out different functions: The Build- ing and Grounds Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Spiritual Life Committee are among the most important. This organization works to improve relationships between students, faculty, and the com- munity by creating mutual understanding. They spon- sor many programs. The most important of these are the annual Orphans' party, the big name shows, and the recognition days. The Senate is made up of class ohi- cers, class representatives, the Inter-Club Council Pres- ident, the Editor of the Cabinet, and two faculty mem- bers. Regular meetings are held on Tuesday evenings to discuss problems facing the student body. This yearis meetings were successfully presided over by August Conte. This is especially true of year- book publishing, in which mass production methods have the tendency to force one to buy just what the other fellow buys. Making of soap or soup or salad dress- ing by mass methods is one thing. But it is quite another to attempt to produce a creative yearbook by trying to squeeze it into some pre-conceived mold. It just can't be done that way. The Wm. J. Keller firm brings together highly trained craftsmen, the very finest papers and ink of superlative quality. Add to these a unique service plan built around the individual school, and, finally, produc- tion by the Velvatone process, which Keller perfected especially for the printing of yearbooks, and you have a truly distin- guished performance. Q a yearbook with singular character and individuality . . . we call it THE LOOK OF THE BOOK. The yearbook you are presently leafing through is the product of the Keller custom program. If you would care to see other examples of THE LOOK OF THE BOOK as produced by Wm. J. Keller, get in touch with us now. WM. J. KELLER INC. Publishers of Finer Yearbooks Buffalo 15, N. Y. Donald J.
