EDWIN CAMEll0N CLARKE The freshly hewn stone, the steel, and the workmen form the picture of the Men's Memorial Dormitory to most observers. Though few recognize his presence, the shadow of Edwin Clarke outlines this por- trait of industry and growth. Only by his direction and work have the funds been raised that make possible the fulfillment of this dream of progress. The world of vision and the World of deeds stand together in the labors of Dr. Clarke, for it is he who must plan, and materialize these plans Within the framework of the ideals and needs of Gen- eva College. It is difficult to perceive the work of unseen hands in the buildings that rise about us. With the deepest appreciation for this unseen and constant labor of Dr. Ed- win C. Clarke, we dedicate to him the GEN- EVAN of 1952. ADMINISTRATIO FRONT ROW: Dr. C. M. Lee, Ralph E. Smith, Atty., Dr. Robert M. Young, Mrs. W. F. Mandeville, Miss Ethel Lytle, Mrs. Willard E. EDWIN CLARKE Bearing not only the tasks of Vice President, but the added responsibil- ity of obtaining building finances, Dr. Edwin C. Clarke has administered over the months even more numerous and essential duties for our college. Despite his heavy burdens, which in- clude the leadership of the Business Administration Department, he is never too busy to assist the students or faculty with their problems. A man of many talents, Dr. Clarke is another of Geneva's sons who has brought honor to his Alma Mater. PRESIDENT DR. C. M. LEE There are few offices as difficult as those which de- mand of a man both leader- ship and service. It is in such a difficult capacity that Dr. Lee administers the daily af- fairs of Geneva College not only while laboring at his desk in Old Main, but also as the foremost representa- tive to other colleges and communities, Dr. Lee carries our spirit and standard. In the past months We have come to better know and ap- preciate the sincere devotion and service of our President. In the year ahead we look for- ward to the continued guid- ance of Dr. Lee who so well expresses the ideals of Geneva as a Christian, scholar, and friend. sig? fx g I Deans DEAN OF THE COLLEGE DR. ROBERT PARK Dr. Park is the natural choice for this office. He has always been a leader of youth, readily under- standing and sympathizing with them. His sense of humor and in- terest in each student give good reasons for his popularity. DEAN OF FRESHMAN DR. HAROLD BRUCE Often when Dr. Bruce is not on cam- pus he is on one of his many trips to high schools to represent Geneva. He also is responsible for the anonymous publicity that students interested in Geneva receive. After they have enter- ed as freshmen he helps them get adjust- ed to college life and advises them in planning their schedules. DIRECTOR or EXTENSION DR. JOHN McISAAC It would be difficult to find a man more capable of performing the duties of Director of Extension. Besides de- voting much of his time to helping fu- ture teachers With their problems and keeping abreast with the modern trends of education, he aids the veterans in adjusting to college life and wisely ad- vises the extension students. DEAN OF WOMEN MRS. HELEN REAGLE Mrs. Reagle begins to counsel the women interested in Geneva from the day they first visit the campus. Her charming personality and advisory ability win the admiration of the women in the W.S.A. which she spon- sors. Deans DEAN OF MEN ' MR. KENNETH SAXTON Mr. Saxton's Warm smile and friend- ly attitude quickly win the confidence of the men of Geneva. Many of his free periods are spent in conversation with students about their schedules, personal problems, and future plans. DEAN OF THE FACULTY DR. WILLIAM CLELAND ' Many difficult problems fall upon the shoulders of Dr. Cleland besides teaching mathematics. It is his duty not only to secure instructors with the highest qualifications and stand- ards but also, as Chairman of the Curriculum Committee, he must set up and supervise the teaching pro- gram. From these crowded and busy offices come our College bulletins and pamphlets. Here are written letters to twelve thousand alumni, as Well as the regular contacts with radio, and the press releases. At the right is Mrs. Janet Downie, Director of Public Relations, with her assistants Thomas Streissguth and Mary VanAlsten. 2 f -..,--si Acting as assistant to the President, Dr. Robert Clarke has worked through the years gathering funds and making friends for Geneva College. Facing the problems of business man- ager for the College is Mr. Stewart Mc- Cready. Not only must he provide for the payment of bills and necessary purchasing, but he also serves as Alumni Treasurer. Behind the many labors to clean the grounds and care for the campus buildings stands Mr. Robert Hemphill, head of the department of maintenance. George Lawrence We, the Senior Class of 1952, pause as we hear the door behind us slowly closing on four of the most cherished years of our lives. Catching one last glimpse of the past, we see ourselves coming into Old Main as Greenies , looking with awe at the intelligent-loc-king seniors, We see ourselves as sophomores, trying to main- tain our scholastic standards and to play a more definite part in college life, then in our junior year we began to realize the importance of our studies, but now we t 7 X . -5-is ,X 'xf .. :C I Q J E? V i K -4 qv V mm realize how often we failed to take advan- tage of our opportunities. Although we re- luctantly close another door behind us we are eager to face the future. As we see in the distance a few of us going into the political world, others into the social World, and others into the domestic fields, we take up our tangible reminders and file away the beautiful memories of Geneva-the campus, classes, and friends -and pass on slowly. His deep thinking and argumentative experience almost make him an invincible debater. His business ability landed him the job of business manager of the 1951 Genevan and that of Cabinet editor this year.. Spending many hours work- ing on the Cabinet, he has had four very busy years at Geneva. He has been a member of the Y.M.C.A., Chess Club, French Club, Boosters, and Pep Club, be- sides sharing his dramatic facul- ties in the Frill and Dagger So- ciety and working on the casts and crews of the plays. AS WILLIAM FRAZIER Although Bill is slightly short in stature he has boundless capa- bilities. As the President of the Student Senate he represents the students' opinions and interests. Always advocating Geneva and school spirit, he has been an act- ive booster in the Boosters Club since it was organized. Last year he was one of the busiest fellows on campus as he worked as editor of the Genevan, Moreover he is popular for his musical talent that has been employed in the band and orchestra each year and in the Swing Band his last two years. J. JOY SMITH . Joy Smith is considered the most active girl on Geneva's cam- pus. With a cheery Hi for everyone, she speeds through each day doing things impossible for the average person. She has spent countless hours in drama- tic activities-in the cast and crews of plays, in 'the Radio Broadcasting Club, and as Presi- dent of the Frill and Dagger Society. Her literary and artistic energies can be seen in the Chimes, Cabinet, Genevan, and in the English Clubg while her school spirit has been shown by her work in the W.S.A., Y.W.C.A., Boosters, and Student Senate. DAVID HOBBS Dave has been the walking en- cyclopedia of Geneva. Receiving prizes for honorary achievements has been a yearly occurrence since he graduated from high school. With emphasis on the scholastic side, Dave has been an active Geneva student. He has been in the Engineering Club and Math Club, besides being on the 1951 Genevan business staff and, the Cabinet staff. His experience as an instructor in the physics lab plus his hobbies of reading and discussing politics will' be additional assets to his future career. DONALD MARTIN This dignified Senior was well chosen to the Who's Who as a leader, especially in the dramatic field. Playing the leading roles in Kind Lady and the Little. Foxesi, Don was in .the cast of seven Geneva plays and a mem- ber of the Frill and Dagger So- ciety for three years. Constantly preparing for his future career as a business manager he has been the Business Manager for the plays, Assistant Business Manager for the Genevan, Chair- man of the Student Dorm Fund and class president. He also was on the Cabinet staff and an active member of many clubs. DAVID McISAAC Dave is the althlete of the Sen- ior Class. Although he has always been kept quite busy as Football Manager and a tennis and bas- ketball player, he has still found time to widen his interest while in Geneva. He has well represented his classmates in the Student Senate and as Senior Class Presi- dent. The Genevan occupied much of his time last year as the Radio Broadcasting and Boosters Clubs have other years. Dave has also been active as a member of the Pep Club and Varsity G Club, constantly preparing him- self for teaching and coaching. -Q. x. 51 Whois Who R. PAUL ROBB Paul well represents Geneva in the Who's Whog to his fine Christian character is added scholarship, leadership and ad- ministrative abilities. For two years he has been Assistant Man- ager of the Brigadoon. This year, besides being President of the Pep Club, he has been in the Ge- nevans and Accounting Club. Pre- viously he participated actively in the Radio Broadcasting Club. He has always been active in sports, being on the basketball, tennis, and track teams. All these factors are indications to his fu- ture usefulness to business and society. FVX JUDITH ORTELT Few are as well equipped to take their place in society as Judy. Excelling in mental and physical feats, she also is active in most of the activities of Gen- eva, We have enjoyed her talent shown in her participation in the cast and crew of many Gen- eva plays. Her administrative ability has been demonstrated by her acting as secretary and vice president of the Frill and Dagger Society, treasurer and vice president of W.S.A., secre- tary of the English Club, and business manager of Chimes. Geneva is confident of Judy's success next year in the Western Reserve School of Nursing. ROBERT GANELIN This distinguished-looking gen- tleman who has played an im- portant part in his class history has a variety of interests. Bob has always been active in drama- tic fieldsf-having a leading part in You Can't Take It With You and John Loves Mary , besides being in the Frill and Dagger So- ciety. His excellent vocal quali- ties have been admired on the programs of the Radio Broad- casting Club of which he has been Station Manager for two years, His literary abilities have been assets to the Chimes staff. Completing his studies at Geneva in only three years, his high schol- astic standards have been seen chiefly in biology. l A X, ' , w. When Peggy stepped through the door of Old Main, Geneva was captivated by her charm and personality. Her friendliness has been partially rewarded by the students' electing her to offices. She has been class secretary, on the Homecoming Court, sec- retary of W.S.A., and secretary of the stu- dent Senate and of the Frill and Dagger So- ciety. Besides this she has been an active member of the Y.W.C.A., Student Senate, Boosters Club, and Radio Broadcasting Club, and has been in the cast of one play each year. i MILTON MOYER Geneva's pep was truly boosted after Milt got started. In his junior year he organized the Boosters Club and served as president fort two years. It was he who got Rosy Roswell to speak in chapel, who decorated the field house for pep meetings, who directed the making of the Boosters float that won the prize in '51. Being exceedingly interested in sports himself, he has made certain every- one else is too. He also wrote for the Cabinet and joined the Radio Broadcasting, and English Clubs. Mary Alice McCowin Treasurer ...... ..Jack Butler We, the Junior Class of 1952, having passed the halfway mark of our college career, have come to the realization that four years is a very short period in which to accomplish our final preparation for life. We look back with regret on the wast- ed hours during which We could have been opening the new doors that were in front of us in the form of educational facilities. Now only one year remains in which to com- plete our four-sided education. If we have not yet proven that we are mature ment- ally, physically, spiritually, and socially, we must do so this year. As upperclassmen we have stepped forth into new activities and have sought to fill the fleeting hours with the work and joy of college life. We are willing to share with all our motto: You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. qu C0 I-2 if'-f kr f. Q 15' .... is aw 1 up I. is 'ISIS 0 STEPHEN CLAIR BELECHAK. When many key men were lost to gradua- tion and the draft, the coaching staff settled down to fitting green fresh- men into the shoes of veterans. The results of the past season do not show the hard Work and heart that coaches and players put into every practice session and game. 1951-52 Season Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Geneva Rider ........ 44 Waynesburg . 7 Grove City .. 0 Wash-J eff. . . .16 West Virginia 89 Westminster .35 Behtany ..... 14 Football FIRST ROW: S. After losing their first two starts, the Covies caught fire and copped the next two. Then they felt the sting of three successive defeats, one by the powerful West Virginia Moun1:aineers . The Homecoming game was won for the second straight year. This time it was Grove City who tasted defeat, 19-0. Assistant Coach CLIFF AULTMAN .139 W V uh., ... w ' gk ' ' ' ' 1 1. nn.-J-2-.u,.....: 1 gf V I W N- llifensive Team Slaughter Brophy 140 Rockenhauser . Defensive Team ' SIaughter 1 EEQQQW ' X 42 Play 'Em Rider For their initial start of the season the Covies entertained a veteran Rider College eleven who were seeking revenge for last year's upset. And get re- venge they did-to the tune of 44-0: It was a long evening for the Geneva boys as the Trenton, New Jersey team steamrollered their way to victory. Wayneshurg It was a very cold night when Waynesburg invaded Reeves Stadium. The Covies got off to a fast start with a T.D. in the first period. The score remain- ed 6-0 Geneva, until the last two minutes when a desperation pass garnered a score. The extra point was added and the Gold and White ended on the short end of a 7-6 score. Grove City Appropriately enough, the Covies came into their own with a victory on Homecoming Day. Amid all the pageantry, the Geneva passing attack caught fire as Bob Steffen caught two touchdown aerials from Pat Cortazzo. The entire game was dominated by the Covies and a perfect day ended on a sweet 19-0 note. 0ver Again Washington and Jefferson i Number two was added to the win side of the ledger after a visit to the W gl J campus. Com- bined air and ground power completely baffled the Prexies. The highlight of the afternoon was a spectacular 90 yard second half kick-off return by Ol' Re- liable Archie Zarone. The sun- ny afternoon proved to be just what the doctor ordered and the Covies returned home with a 27-16 triumph over Slim Ran- som's charges. West Virginia This day proved to be the turning point of the season. So much has been said concerning this game and it has been re- played so many times that it is hardly necessary to say more. An eternity of football was squeezed into that afternoon as the Covies fell before the on- slaught of the Mountaineers 89-0. It was only too obvious that the hard fighting Genevans had jumped far out of their class that afternoon. Westminster Still feeling the sting of the preceding game, the Gold and White found themselves falling in defeat before the charges from New Wilmington. The Cov- ies tried vainly to find them- selves and avenge the previous defeat, but when the smoke had cleared the scoreboard read Westminster 35, Geneva 0. I4 4 Pictured at the right are George Lawrence and Archie Zarone. George Lawrence was named honorary captain of the 1951 football team. Back Archie Zarone received honorable mention on the All State team. Honors Bethany For its last encounter of the season the Geneva squad travel- ed to Bethany, West Virginia. Scoring a touchdown in the first half and another in the second, the Bisons extended the losing string to three in a row. The 14-0 score ended the season and the Gold and White found them- selves with two wins and five losses. The season ended on a personal sour note for Captain George Lawrence who suffered a broken ankle. 7 fi Ron Nocera, at the far left, and Lou Campos were also recipients of All State honorable men- tion. On the field Ron Nocera was our depend- - able center, while Lou Campos held down one of the guard positions. W is X ' Athletic Director Being Athletic Director should be enough for any man, but Clifford J. Aultman also handles the jobs of assistant football coach, head basketball coach, and tennis men- tor. The other managers were Frank De- capio, Phil Lindeman, Howard Stewart, and Bob Voelker. Aultman is serving his second year as director of Geneva athletics. Mr. Aultman resides in New Brighton with his Wife and three sons. 'I4 4 Coach Cliff Aultman Geneva After a slow start, Geneva's Gold and White cagers copped seven straight vic- tories near the end of the season to estab- lish a mark of twelve Wins and eleven losses. Their late season Win streak earn- ed the Covies a playoff game with Clarion for a N.A.I.B. tournament bid. The Gen- eva five bowed to the Clarion team 87-75, but not' before giving the visitors a scare with a tremendous second half comeback. Highlight of the season was the never-say- die spirit the Covies showed against the highly touted Duquesne Dukes. FIRST ROW: H. Stewart, P. Kinkead, T.
