i Dr. O'Connell President To the Class of 1970: Graduation is always an exciting experience, for it marks both a beginning and an end. For you who are leaving the College, it is the end of your formal study in this institution. But the word beginning is really more appropriate, since those of you who have finished your formal study with us will be going on to begin new careers in four-year institutions, business or industry. The purpose of Genesee Community College, as indeed with most community colleges in New York State, is to give full opportunity to all high school graduates in the area served by the community col- lege. And as you move on to new situations, I hope that you will reflect on the opportunities you have had while you have been with us. How have you changed? How is your attitude toward the world around you different than it was when you started your college career? Why is it now easier for you to continue your studies or begin your working career? The answers to all of these questions should provide you with a new sense of maturity and purpose in ev- erything that you do. Another phrase that is commonly used in two-year colleges is the open door. Like full opportunity it is meant to convey a philosophy that all who qualify with a high school diploma be admitted to a course of study. You have done that. You have met the chal- lenge, and now as you leave us, you will experience another kind of open door. You will find places opening for you in education, business and industry. You were green and untested when you came to us, but now your services are in demand. Accept these new challenges with the same sense of inquiry and humility that have brought success to you at Genesee. Persevere in everything that you do, and success will be yours for a lifetime. In addition, we hope that these years at Genesee have been happy ones for you and that you have found pleasure in the knowledge that you have gained, and the friends you have made. Good luck in the future. Sincerely, Alfred C. O'Connell President

Our first entering class, which later became our first graduating class, was marked by an aura of uncertainty on the part of the students, that is proba- bly a typical situation in a new institution - uncer- tainty in terms of academic program, as well as un- certainty in how acceptable their work would be to other institutions, and in the job market. This grad- uating class leaves Genesee Community College with an aura of expectancy on their part, as well as ours. Those of you who have successfully completed a career program know of the many opportunities that were offered last year's graduates, and those who have completed transfer programs and who desire to continue your education look to last year's graduates, and look forward confidently, knowing that you will have the opportunity to enter a four-year institution with full junior status, and successfully complete your educational goals. You have been part of, and involved in, many of the growth aspects of the College, and you can justifiably take pride in the wide variety of things your class has accomplished, ranging from charitable efforts to raise funds for the cancer drive and desti- J N. Dean Steiner Academic Dean tute families in the area to developing a student organization which prides itself in its involvement in all aspects of College life and the College community I hope this sense of involvement in the community and this concern for others less fortunate will con tinue to be a part of your lives in our hearts for our first few graduating classes since you are the students who have laid the founda tion for the College s success Perhaps my own per sonal feeling can best be summed up in a statement that I made to our first graduating class the Col lege is truly proud of you and we hope that your graduation will not be the end of your relationship with G CC but rather the beginning of an on going affair that will be a mutual source of pride With best wishes to each and every one of you for a happy and successful future in your chosen field I Cordially Jaffa Stuart Steiner Dean of the College fa We, at the College, will always have a special place am, 21
