Not much business is discussed but a lot of words are spoken or sung. For many it is an opportunity to learn and sing the “college songs.” The turn out from the fraternities is usually good; it must be, otherwise their lawn gets wetted down. The last two Senior meetings were a big success. Star- dust, one of Flint’s finer ladies, was there to lead the songs. Wt atcsicae bess Bob Gorman, Senior Class Advisor for the class of 69. 45 Senior Hats A long-standing tradition at GMI, history shrouds its origin, is revived and carried anew each spring in A-4 and B-4 sections. The occasion arises with the advent of each Senior class’s last glorious section at GMI. During that section, each Senior II wears the hat of his choice to all classes, establishments, and related functions. The hat becomes a symbol of his accomplishment and a sign that the “end is near.” i “Babyhip???” — Senior II. Senior II study break? Banjo player. cS The hard-working star. The day began by march- ing through the halls of the school and presenting a dozen roses to the Senior Class Sweetheart, Miss Nancy Murphy. After Dr. Rodes spoke a few words of wisdom to the 69’ers, they all piled into buses and headed for a day of relaxation. Golf and swim- ming was tried by nearly all. The main purpose of the club is to provide an opportunity for any student athlete to increase his participation in basketball be- yond that of the regular intramural program. This objective is accomplished by scheduling several basket- ball games with other colleges in the area. The club’s activities also serve as a “feeler” to determine the feasi- bility of a future intercollegiate sports program for GMI. Six games were scheduled for the first season of the young club. Among our opponents were Central Michi- gan Univ., Aquinas College, Flint J.C., and the Flint U of M branch. The games were limited to either the freshman or junior varsity squads from these schools. SSR oN ¥ 4 Jeff Meyer fights for a rebound. Victories were scored against Flint J.C. and U. of M., while the size and conditioning of Central and Aquinas proved to be too much. The able assistance of Coach Lee Middleton (below) helped tremendously in the develop- ment of our GMTE squad, which numbered 12 to 16 men in each section. Student support of the team was also good both for home and away games. Although the win-loss record for the first season is not impressive, the success of the club proved to be in the right direction. A true evaluation of the club, how- ever, can only come after a few years of experience. With the availability of fine athletes and increased stu- dent support, we hope to increase the collegiate atmo- sphere at GMI in the near future. Some students say that the picnic, held at Flushing Park, is well attended because of the good lunch that is served afterwards. The after- noon includes such events as a soccer game between the local and overseas students, horseshoes, volley- ball, and the egg toss. Theta Xi, one of the younger fraternities on cam- pus, began as the Cooperative Students’ Association in 1953 and became the Michigan Gamma Chapter of Kappa Sigma Kappa on July 10, 1954. When Theta Xi and Kappa Sigma Kappa merged on August 22, 1962, the present Kappa Sigma Chapter of Theta Xi Fraternity was formed. The 1966-67 school year was quite successful in all phases of their college life for the men of Theta Xi. They won the IFC Scholarship Award for the third Consecutive year and finished first in pledge achieve- ment. In the sports field, Theta Xi won bowling tourna- ments, finished high in basketball, and won many mi- nor tournaments. In addition, Kappa Sigma Chapter finished fifth nationally in 1966-67 for the Memorial Award, the outstanding chapter award. A number of men have been quite successful indivi- dually, also. One brother was initiated into Alpha Tau Iota, three into Alpha Phi Gamma, and three into the Robots. Theta Xi’s long dream is nearing its realization because their new chapter house on Sunset Drive is scheduled for completion early in the summer of 1968. The house and other signs portend a bright future for Theta Xi at GMI. The new Theta Xi house as it looked near completion. 144 } JAMES 4. Sigma Chi took third place basketball and baseball points in B-2 and B-4, and swept the swimming meet in A-4. Brothers holding office this year as Athletic Council Chairman and Junior Class President in A-Sec- tion and IFC President in B-Section brought further fra- ternal representation to the GMI campus. Co-operating with the community of Flushing, the brothers of Zeta Theta aid in the yearly Red Feather and Cancer drives along with such ambitious projects as painting the ceiling of the police station. Major property developments for the year include the construction of a garage by the pledge class and clearing of the “back forty.” The football game between the members and houseguests was a tough contest. Again this year, SAE was well represented in school activities: the Social Council Chairman, the Ath- letic Council Chairman, the Representative-at-Large, five council managers, and three club presidents were Sig Alphs. Four of the brothers were Robots, and three were ATT. Among the social happenings of the year were the fabulous Ski Weekend, the Family Weekend, the Presi- dents’ Party, the Alumni Weekend, and the Grad Ball Party. Again following tradition, the Sig Alphs look proudly back and eagerly forward. SAE Sweetheart j coal The Sig Alph house on Beecher Road. The vast trophy room at SAE. EMINENT WARDEN GHARLES E. The “Pikes” had their beginning at the University of Virginia, Sunday evening, March 1, 1868. Zeta Alpha chapter now observes with honor here at GMI, one hundred years of tradition. Phi Kappa Epsilon, a local fraternity of GMI, be- came a chapter of the vast national fraternity system on November 10, 1963. More recently, one of the distinguished alumni from the local days, and a member of the national has at- tained the top post in General Motors. Ed Cole, during the latter part of 1967, became president of GM. At Pi Kappa Alpha, the dream of a decade has fin- ally reached the point of reality. During 1968, plans were finalized to build the new house on Beecher and Linden Roads. The senior class has given to Zeta Alpha chapter the dream of every Pike. They have restored a 1941 Chevro- let fire engine. This machine is the informal mascot of Pi Kappa Alpha. New is the word for the Pikes in 1968. 715 EAST ST. 153 Fuji Wins Athletic Trophy This year the men of Phi Gamma Delta have partici- pated in athletics, community service and social events, as well as maintaining a respectable grade average. Phi Delts Appear = Strong in Future The 1967-1968 school year has been another mile- stone in the history of the Michigan Delta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta. In endeavoring to round out their lives, the men of Phi Delt have participated in all aspects of life, including athletics, community service, scholastics, and many social and school activities. Phi Delts’ efforts in these areas were culminated with the recognition of finishing second for the Outstanding Fraternity Award. In addition, the men of Phi Delt were recognized for their outstanding work in service to the community by the Guy R. Cowing Award. Also contributing to the suc- cess of this school year was a third place finish in schol- arship. Fraternity life of course would not be complete without a Sweetheart, and Michigan Delta is proud to present Miss Vicki Barringer as the Sweetheart of Phi Delta Theta. 157 158 SHERMAN J Miss heart. Betas Are Strong in Politics The Delta Eta Chapter of Beta Theta Pi was initially a local fraternity founded in 1953. From several places of residence within Flint, the Be- tas moved to their present location near Fenton, south of Flint. The Beta house is situated on eight acres of land on Lake Fenton, a popular summer recreation spot for the entire Flint area. Included on the land is a baseball field, ample space for foot- ball and a large new recreation room. In addition to their own facilities, the Beta’s also make full use of the lake for swimming, skiing and sailing in the summer, and ice-boating in the winter. The Beta’s also have an unusually strong fraternal spirit. With the relatively small capac- ity (30 men) of their house, a powerful bond has been established among the total membership. While they historically do well in scholastics, athletics, and public service, they have been most outstanding in school politics. The Betas are devoted to the concept of the development of the complete, well-rounded indi- vidual, and the creation of the memories and friendships which four years of a young man’s life deserve. 163 164 oe ie o - a Chuck Maitland about to set up a spike. Theta Tau The General Motors Institute Colony of Theta Tau, as a professional engineering fraternity, has as its major goals the promotion of brotherhood and improvement of engineering abilities. Professional development activities, for this year, were accentuated by the colony’s initiation and sponsor- ship of Engineering Week at GMI. Engineering week activities were composed of displays, movies, and high- lighted by a speech from Mr. Roy Lunn, Manager of Advanced Concepts of Ford Motor Company. Other pro- fessional development activities consisted of tours, din- ner banquets with speakers, and movies. During the past year, the colony established a resi- dence for some of its membership. Socially, the colony had rush parties, smokers, picnics, a Casino party, and the annual Student-Alumni Dinner-Dance at Pine Knob. In Athletics, the colony won the ping-pong champi- onship and tied for the wrestling tournament champion- ship. The colony also participated actively in other team and individual sports. The men of Theta Tau Colony won the Sigma Chi Bowl, a test of intellectual prowess. theta Tau is looking forward to another prosperous year, highlighted by the attainment of full chapter sta- tus and the acquisition of expanded fraternity housing. 169 The Independents For students who are not affiliated with any of the fraternities, as well as for several who are, the people of Flint provide a wide range of homes, apartments, and rooms. These range from entire houses, such as the late, lamented Birdhouse, to single small rooms; in between are various size homes, rooms, and the YMCA. Students who do not enjoy the advantage of Greek living find that independence has several advantages— more relaxed regulations on behavior, closer kinship with roommates, generally quieter study areas, and the freedom to choose the ideal social life and home-away- from-home for themselves. 170 GMIA The General Motors Independent Associa- tion was especially active this year, preparing for next year when all Freshmen I students will be independents. Each section again sponsored four movies during the year, placed teams in all major ath- letic tournaments, sponsored candidates in the GMTE elections, and held several parties for members. Independent candidate Jim Hetten- house was elected “A” section GMTE President for the 1968-69 year. New activities this year included the in- troduction of the Last Chance Lectures in “B” section, and the similar Faculty Discussion Meetings in “A.” “A” section also travelled to Detroit to see several sports events. “B” sec- tion took over the previously GMTE sponsored Talent Show. The most successful activity of the year was the Road Rally-Hayride-Cookout-Dance, co-sponsored by the “A” section independents, the Firebirds, Theta Xi and Theta Tau fratern- ities. As always, the year finished well with the annual Awards Banquet at Carling’s and Zhender’s. 171 oe a a Ries GMTE Executive Council GMTE is the official student organization whose primary objective is to promote student activ- ities and to contribute to faculty-student relation- ships. Each plant se- lects the most gratified student in each section. These men are the portion of GMI students who are likely to profit most from the addressed of the cor- poration executives. A dinner meeting is held once a section, and a speaker, usually a vice-president of General Motors, presents the main message. 211 ae a - ATI initiates, members, and faculty advisors enjoy the initiatory banquet. att) il - ce ” cd a4 4' ATI Pledges listen intently as details of pledging activities are explained. 212 Alpha Tau Iota, an honorary engineering so- ciety, gives recognition to all students exhibiting outstanding scholarship. Active membership in ATI is limited to all juniors and seniors who meet the qualifications. However, the society does honor students in all four years of the cooperative program. In order to be initiated into ATI, a student must have a grade average of 90% or better. Membership is limited to no more than 10% of the junior class and 2% of the senior class not already active members. Pledging activities endure for one week and are followed by an initiatory banquet. All pledges are required to wear the ATI triangle and small jingling bells. Sophomores who have shown exceptional scho- lastic ability may be admitted into junior member- ship. An award is also presented to the freshman attaining the highest grade average in his class. QCA w me} o) de} je) op) BS o te) uo) £ Ay ' x © . The society was first formed in 1927 as the Mad Hatters and was recognized and renamed by the Insti- tute in 1930. The Robots are selected from Juniors and Seniors who have shown an outstanding combination of leader- ship in school activities, scholastic ability, and person- ality. Grades must be at least class average and mem- bership is determined by the number of points earned in GMTE activities. During initiation week, the Robot pledges entertain the student body with singing and joke telling. The week is climaxed with the now-traditional Robot Ball where each pledge receives the Robot pin symbolizing the work and effort put forth for the student body. LIPPINCOTT OLD 2 r= EU le 292 Aotean : g z i 293 294 : 2 . : . ' : : : : 295 296 wf The 1967-68 school year is over. For some, it marks another step towards graduation. For others, it marks the end—the end of another era in their life. During the four years, they forgot many high school friends and established many new relationships. Some of their fellow classmates will remain as _ ac- quaintances forever. Gone are the sleepy and sweaty days in class caused by the many hours of studying during the hot summer months. Gone are the many hours of writing labs, working on homework problems, and studying for quizzes. Gone are the long nights before semester fi- nals. In their place are the memories of the days at Gen- eral Motors Institute. The memories of the weekend parties and the big dance that they attended with their girl from home. The nights of sitting in a bar and dis- cussing their plans for the future, or the nights of sit- ting in a car and having a few drinks to relieve the tensions. The memories of girls that they took to a show or met at a dance. Gone also is the constant moving back and forth to Flint. Most of the seniors have settled into permanent plans for the future. They have security, a good job, someone to turn to, and a set goal in life. There are a few who don’t want security—they want to get out and roam the world. They treat their four years at GMI as an experience —as a stepping stone to future knowledge. Knowledge is their goal in life; knowledge of the world and the people that live in it. They don’t want to read about people in other countries—they want to travel through these countries and learn how the people live and why they live the way they do in that particular area of the world. The more knowledge they gain the better prepared they are for the future. These are the people that treat everything objec- tively. They don’t live by tradition; they treat every- thing as a new experience. These are the people that dedicate many long hours toward completing a job prop- EDITOR: David J. Brace ASSOCIATE EDITOR: James L. Parish SECTION EDITORS: Donald D. DeMotte Michael C. Eagle Thomas K. Lockwood G. Michael Morgan ADVISOR: Henry C. Kowalski DIRECTORS OF PHOTOGRAPHY Robert S. D’Reaux Eduard I. Vanags erly. They pass up many criticisms and often many good times because they believe that the job must be done no matter what the cost. These people develop into our leaders; they are the ones that keep the world turn- ing at its feverish pace. As this, the final page, goes to the publisher, I am filled with relief that the job is finally done, and grate- ful for the opportunity of being editor. Looking back over the past year, I think of all the people that helped make this book possible. The people that encouraged — me to continue when the going was rough. The many people not on the staff who would contribute a few minutes of their time in order to get some job done. Special recognition goes to my Associate Editor, Jim Parish, whose hard work added greatly to the final out- come of the book. The Image section is a credit to Jim. Special thanks also goes to the Directors of Photogra- phy, Ed Vanags and Bob D’Reaux, for the many fine pictures in this book. Without their talents and cooper- ation the ideas behind this book would never have been presented. The efforts of Jim and I would not have been realized without the help of our Section Editors: Don DeMotte, Mike Eagle, Tom Lockwood and Mike Mor- gan. Unfortunately for all of us the only reward is seeing our efforts published. I would also like to thank my fraternity brothers at | Pi Kappa Alpha for their guidance and encouragement. | I would especially like to thank my fellow seniors at the house for all the extra hours they spent on renew- | ing the fire engine in order that I might get this book | finished. I want to thank our publisher, Inter-Collegiate Press, and their representative, Mr. Hank Roehrich for his advice and guidance. In spite of some of the statements issued, it has been my pleasure to be Editor of the 1968 REFLEC- TOR. If this book captures one memory for you, then I feel it was a success.
