You were everything a friend could have ever been When we open our eyes and look around, you are no longer within our sight. But when we close our eyes and look into our hearts, you are near again, and everything is alright. 84 3 A K TRACEY SCHMIDT I stood on the train platform holding my small suitcase, waiting for the next train, any train. I had come to an important decision. It was time 1 ended this agony. I've had Leukemia since fourth grade, and I've been in and out of hospitals. My parents have spent a lot of money and have gone through a lot of pain. It's hard not wanting to care, or wondering what will happen in the future. Life is so full of surprises. Maybe after I'm gone they'll discover a cure, but, then again, maybe not. The family will be upset and I'm sure they'll miss me, but I hate watching them worry day after day. It's been six long years and I'm tired of waiting for miracles. It's not easy seeing teenagers laughing and enjoying life, while I worry about how many more sunrises I shall live to see. The air grows cold and my heart grows still as the train arrives. I don't know my destination, and I don't know how long it takes me to get there, but I do know that I won't feel any more pain. I don't want to leave, but I know in my heart that I must. It seems I can't find the words to say good-bye, so I hope to be remembered as a fighter, and a person who loved life. My eyes fill with tears as I look back, but I'm not sad because I know I won this fight. There are brighter horizons ahead of me and I can't be beaten by this disease. Many bright faces of family and friends will shine in my memory, and I shall leave those who are still fighting with this thought: If you give up on your dreams, there's no way they can come true. They're just beyond the clouds and right behind the sun, so don't worry about the rain that falls. Seniors included Danielle Bonge and Kathleen Mangieri, who received team MVP. 101 GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Varsity Volleyball had a winning season of 12-2 coached by Mr. Schilling. Award winners were All-County Diane Warther, All-Conference Andrea Prida, and All-Division Kirsten and Karin McElroy. Seniors were Donna Zappalla, Diana Schilling and Kirsten McElroy. Much of their success can be credited to the determination of their coach, Ms. Lioidice. 103 GIRLS TENNIS Top Row — Rochelle McDonald, Vanessa David, Lisa Guild, Carol Guzewicz, Pam Kolinsky, Michele Conrad, Sari Wildenberg, Stacey Franco, Suzanne Aronson, Diane Henry. Jodi Brown Bottom Row — Captains — Diane Ryan. Leslie Berg, Allison limbeck ROWING George Henry represents MacArthur in national competitions. Among other honors, he has won the senior single at the High School Nationals in Virginia and the single at the Junior Nationals in Indianapolis. Last summer, George represented the United States at the Junior Worlds in Roudnice, Czechoslavakia. FENCING GIRLS SWIMMING Alan Weber has been in fencing for three years. His first national placing occurred when he won the Bronze medal in the Junior Olympics in 1984. Last year, he won the gold medal in the New England Regional Competition. Currently he was placed the top of American Juniors striv- ing to make the Junior World team in 1987. They placed second in the MacArthur tournament with Brian Schlitt, Danny Pope, Mike Flanagan, Jimmy Winters and Curtis Moore as finalists. This was ac- complished without five of the top players from last season's undefeated team. The high powered offense was led by cap- tain and high-scorer Tom Cun- ningham and assistant captain Lenny Schwartz. It also included Bill Munro, Kevin Dunning and Steve Phieffer. The steady defense was led by hard-hitting Rob Patten and Frank Agovino, who led the league in penalty minutes. The graduating Falcons wish much success to future teams. 113 VARSITY LACROSSE The Varsity Generals enjoyed a strong season highlighted by the 7-5 victory over our cross-town rivals at Division. All players con- tributed greatly, especially captains Eric Rao, Gary Rinaldi and Seth Tierney. The team will be losing a lot of valuable seniors who wish the future teams equal success. MacArthur students hosted delegates from several schools, including Mepham, Oceanside, Townshend-Harris, and Westbury. Aside from debating, delegates en- joyed dancing, a movie, and a live band. Friend- ships were made and fun was had by all who attended. BAND Under the new direction of Mr. Schloen, the MacArthur band per- formed at football games as well as the spring and winter concerts. After 26 years, and much fighting, the band got new uniforms. The musicians who made All-County were Scott Abrams and Beth Larson. The elected officers were: President — Beth Larson; Vice President — Kelly Roaldsen; Record- ing Secretary — Heather Curran; Treasurer — Terri Schmidt. JAZZ COMBO This year, the Jazz Combo competed in a number of jazz competitions throughout the tri-state and New England area, including McDonald's Jazz Festival at LaGuardia School of the Arts (1st place). Five Towns College (1st place), and Berklee School of Music in Boston (4th place out of 80 bands). Kenny Scharf made the All-State and All-County Jazz Bands, as well as be- ing a member of the McDonald's Jazz Band Eddie Leone also made All-County Jazz and was an alternate for the McDonald's Band 128 K I C K L I N E 130 131 SADD prospered this year with close to 125 members. Their influence was prominent around holidays and prom time with assemblies, displays in the window, and visits to classrooms by SADD members. The club was run by the drug and alcohol counselor, Jackie Levine, who devoted much time and energy to build the club and have her cause reach more students of Mac Arthur. SPANISH CLUB This year's Spanish Club has enjoyed many educa- tional activities. Through speaking the language and listening to Spanish music, they learn about hispanic culture. They hosted a dance to send relief to Ecuador after the earthquake. Next year they hope for a greater turn out. BUSINESS CLUB The school store's usual success was an example of the accomplishments of the Business Club.
