GIRLSSGCCER Girls varsity soccer had a very successful season and continues to build a strong com- petitive program. Conference IV champions in ’84 and second place in Conference III in ’85 makes this one of the school’s most successful teams. The team will lose its six senior players but we also started five freshmen. The seniors were the first girls to play varsity soccer at MacArthur and they have already established a great tradition for the school’s young women athletes to uphold. CHEERLEADING Lead by co-captains Karen Lederer and Kristin Karaktin the varsity cheerleaders had a high-spirited season. The team entered competition at Brent- wood H.S. this year. Their long, hard practices paid off when they placed eighth out of the twenty-four teams entered. The J.V. cheerleaders also entered the Brentwood competition. They were awarded the second place trophy out of the 14 teams competing. We are very proud of both teams. Top Row L-R: Cathy Ranlet. Sherri Samberg. Stacey Forstadt. Serena Catrone. The Generals wrestled their way to an 11-6 win-loss record for the 1985-86 season. “It was a fine season for us,” said Coach John Davis, “we’re in one of the toughest leagues around, and this could have been the strongest MacArthur team of recent times.” MacArthur’s season was highlighted by its 27-26 victory over crosstown rival Division Ave. H.S. “This is the first time we’ve ever beaten them, and it was now or never.” MacArthur’s strength lay in their lower weights, led by co-captains Fred Sanicola and Ray Melendez, Mike Flanagan, and Mike Bobal. Holding up the rear with strong performances throughout the year were Brian Schlitt, and Glen Buhse. “It’s a long, hard season, so you’ve got to love it.” Congratulations to Mike Flanagan, Fred Sanicola, and Ray Melendez, who all finished among the top 8 of Nassau County. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The 1985-86 Girls Basketball team did not have one of its better seasons. Hoping to improve on last year’s 2-12 record, the Lady Generals fell short of their goal. Matched up with very tough competition, their league record was 0-12, including two losses within 3 points. However, victories over Clarke (44-16), Wheatley (38-27), and Garden City (43-30) gave MacArthur a 3-5 non-league record. Top Row L-R: Mrs Davis. Karin McElroy. BCyS BASKETBALL This year's team compiled a 12-7 overall record. Two highlights of the season were the winning of the Division and also the Valley Stream South Tournaments. This season was the first winning basketball season for the Generals in many years. Coach Morris in only his second season as coach has made a major difference. He has much to look forward to as he has two starters returning. One of them is all-division Guard, Tim Bums, who was the second leading scorer of the league Russ Tavroff, the 6' 7 Center, is also returning. The Generals will be losing 7 productive seniors. Last year the J.V. finished with a record of 20 0, while the Varsity fell one game short of the county cham- pionship. With the depar- ture of six seniors last year, the team is very young. The twelfth annual Congress took place on March 7, 8, and 9. Debating went on throughout the weekend and a dance was held on Friday night. On Saturday night the gymnasium was open for all those who wanted to play volleyball or basketball, and The Breakfast Club was played in the cafeteria for anyone to watch. As the club’s new advisor, Mr. Gatland did a fine job in organizing the weekend. By Sunday everyone was exhausted, but they had had a lot of fun, made new friends, and learned how Congress works. Special Events 141 BCAINSTCCMECS The MacArthur team reached the playoffs of the Channel 21 Brainstormers competition this year. In their first preliminary, the Generals scared away Syosset and won by forfeit. The second preliminary went down to the wire as MacArthur defeated Herricks 225-215 on a tiebreaker question. The Generals were on their way to becoming television stars. On February 10 in front of a studio audience, MacArthur tri- umphed over Seaford 220-95. They therefore earned the right to continue their television careers. The team members were John Burns, Dawn Pedersen (alternate), Arthur Poliak (Captain), and Stephen Sondike. 142 • Special Events ELCCD DRIVE 4 On February 10, 1986 the MacArthur senior class held its annual blood drive in the gym from 9:00 am on. The AIDS scare did not hurt the ef- fort. Students and faculty donated 90 pints of blood to the New York Blood Center of the American Red Cross. Students eagerly missed classes during the day to give blood. The donors were awarded Blood Drop pins and were given cookies, jelly beans, and tang after donating. Doc- tors and nurses gave each donor personal atten- tion and helped to make this year’s blood drive memorable. Special Events 143 RCCK NIGHT The Annual MacArthur Rock-Night featured the return of Aragon and Kalmantin, as well as the appearance of two new bands; Exile and Intruder. The evening was a smash with hit after hit of heavy metal and rock music. Money prizes were awarded to each band with the first place prize of $125 awarded to Aragon. 144 • Special Events liALLCWCEN DANCE The Halloween Dance held on Wednesday October 30, 1985 was spon- sored by the Junior Class. Special Events 147 DANCES The lights flashed, the sound of music filled the air. and you could sense the excitement as MacArthur students forgot about their homework for a few hours and danced the night away at one of the many school dances. Although the only purpose of these dances seemed to be to have fun, there was always an underlying reason; to raise money for one of the many extra curricular activities of MacArthur. HCMECCMING The threat of rain did not dampen the spirit of MacArthur’s supporters during their Homecoming which took place on Oc- tober 19, 1985. The day started with the annual parade which spanned from the Wantagh Cinema to MacArthur. After the parade, crowds filled the stands to watch the Generals shut out Valley Stream Central 12-0. During half- time prizes were awarded to the best floats and to the longest banner. The highlight was the crowning of Miss Sherri Samberg as Homecoming Queen 1985.
