We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence, and intelligence and skill. We can be free! It can only be understood through experience. From this experience I have found that I must have your friendship — Because each time I see the sun rise, and a new day begins, It is never looked forward to; There is no-one to share it with. You are the best friend I ever had, but you've been away so long. I feel as though a part of me is gone A part of me that I long to get back... Be near me again, or I shall not be a real me. — Adena Bank 20 (Excerpt from a Creative Writing Class Journal) I find myself sitting in this classroom on a beautiful Friday morning trying to get my thoughts together. After coming home from a concert at 3:00 A.M. I'm wondering how creative I can be five hours later. Oh well, I 'II give it a try and see how it comes out. If it doesn 't, I won't worry. I did so much, my health was such, time had no hold on me. My yard was full, a carnival, loud voices, joyous sound— This world had bred all in my head for not a soul was found. Every day, alive and gay with overflowing joy — The childhood which seems so good treats life as one huge toy. But time — it passes, age harrasses, a wrinkle; now you're old. Life, so strange, will rearrange the body once so bold. My attitude of solitude since has seen new light, And now I fear the coming year each silent, lonely night. My activeness is growing less my strength is fading fast. What happened to that carefree view that life will always last? If I had the chance to sing and dance the way I had before, Cautious — then, I’d do it again the same mistakes and more. But here I am, a dying man, so much I have not done. Yet children devour life by the hour— I'm envious of each one. —Andrea Ross 60 61 Peace and War i . Kessler Levittown—Nine girls were sus- pended at MacArthur High School yesterday following a smoke-in” and a brief march through the halls by 50 to 70 of the school’s 1,300 students to protest a get-tough policy by the school’s new headmaster. Several of the suspended girls said they deliberately smoked in the bath- room to force administrators to meet with them to discuss grievances. Ten- sions have been building all year at the school, the girls said, because of the hiring of hall monitors, the issu- ance of student identification cards and the conversion of a student lounge into a classroom. 92 rr €Y FLew Us)TO OVR NCST AL CELENTANO. Yet the anxious and anticipatory quiet is soon broken by a single sharp slash of the stick. The air is filled with the music of a thousand-instruments playing as one The wand, floating in the steady stream of melodies and counterpoints, remains consistently and patiently caressing the beat Stronger now. is the music, and the air swells with excitement As the last note is sounded the wand returns to its former position, unmoving in the conductor ’s hand, excepting the slight tremble in remembering its magical power. . — Amy Feldman FOOTlWi, Left to right — Front Row: Greg Gerner. I I ; Hfio I § f-c Saying good-bye to a friend is never easy, Especially when it is forever. We have shared much of our lives — All of our dreams. You have seen a part of me no-one else knew existed. Thank you for the memories you’ve given me — They will remain a part of my innermost soul. Take care, my friend, and utter a silent prayer That someday we will face each other once again. — Michele Montiglio He gave one last look across the sky, across that magnificent silver land where he had learned so much.
