FALI Autumn is a time of change A time when trees ignite With flashes of red and amber The flames line the streets And then slowly die out. They are trampled on Or caught up in the whirlpools. Their remains are gathered up into lifeless piles. Once bright and splendid, they lie peacefully, Awaiting their doom. The trees are matchsticks Tall and stark. They stand shivering longing for the flames, That once made them feel so glorious. Here and there a single spark flares Until a gust of wind Blows it out. — Judy Rotondo 18

They could sense the nervous- ness in the air at the Old MacArthur coral. Who would be the prime cut meat and who would be the low grade? The bell sounded and each creature pushed his way to the center of the pen where the cowboys held the coveted slips of paper. Finally the tu- mult subsided and the sacred notices were distributed. Pedro Bull was number one and shouts of congratula- tions resounded. After all, rank deter- mined which farms would accept you. Now Pedro could live at any farm his intelligent little heart desired — Hor- ned, Hen State, Pranceton, Dirt- mouth, the University of Transylva- nia, etcetera. All the others were sub- ject to scrutinization by the board of Eggheads which decided whether they were fit for farmlife or the slaughter- house. It really didn’t matter whether the axe or the tuition fees killed them. P.G.
