Why is there a special written form? So people can communicate better? Ridiculous! People will never be able to communicate — They are too busy keeping up defenses, repentances, in correct sentences. They never get down to the heart of the matter. In- stead of saying, “I want to make love to you,” someone might say, I’d like to be alone with you — to talk” or instead of simply saying, I want to be your friend.” people play games. People are constantly playing games. Not knowingtheiraims. Living and worrying about making the wrong move. Sometimes I hate people so much; they seem so false. Sometimes I love them so much; they are just being what they know to be — real. I have fears for them I have tears for them I wish the walls were broken; the heart open; the words spoken as felt. Diane Weinstein Art Literature 52 Oneness Cry and I will cry with you. Your cheeks will be no less salty than mine. For if you are sad. I too will mourn the day. If a blanket of darkness will shield your eyes. I too will not see through that shield. I feel pain for your feeling pain, and your cure will be my cure. Laugh and I will laugh with you. Your lips will be no less wide than mine. Your laughter may ring through the breezes, but mine will sing for your ringing. Our hearts will beat hard from our laugh- ter. and when yours stops, mine too will cease. Remember — if you fall, I too will fall, and our falling will raise us once again. Stacey Walshon Suspicions i i Trust me and I’ll do nothing wrong, but at the first sign of dis- trust I’ll become as bad as your thoughts. I sense your eyes follow- ing me wherever I go while your evil suspicions surround me to the point where I think of nothing else. If you had faith in me you wouldn’t ques- tion my actions or whereabouts. You’d accept me as a person like yourself, with doubts but none as deep as thoughts you display. Why don't you listen when I continuously tell you I’m behaving in a manner no different than yesterday’s and with very little change from tomor- row’s. Maybe I should just rearrange my behavior patterns to fit your lik- ings. No. I won’t change. So when there are no more questions to answer I'll be more comfortable with you. As for right now. you’ve made me no more sure of myself than you are. Mary Jane Reimer I METAMORPHOSIS Sunlit dew glistens On a wild field as a cricket chirps, breaking the silence. Three birds glide gracefully on a wind current. Maple branches stir as a gentle breeze touches them. The Sun casts warmth and shafts of mellow light through the trees that line the eastern boundary. Indian paintbrush, a soft orange summer flower, still smile at intervals in the sunlight. Dense growths of ferns respond in unison to the breeze. As my glance moves east toward the woods, splashes of orange and red explode in the green. Intricate leaf designs are outline against the blue sky. Dave Watkins i - i V Rainy Day Inside Of Tears A man with a golden earring, who Cries by sitting in the mist outside the museum Where no shedding of tears is necessary. He is capable of pretending that the drops of rain Are his tears. Yet, I know They are not, and he knows also, For great pain shadows his thoughts. Cry my brother, weep my dear old friend, and Then only, perhaps, will you understand Why — why all those you love have gone and left you alone To contemplate the situation of lost life. Cry damn you! Are you not the least bit scared? I’m awfully frightened by dark, Streets and unfamiliar faces of the art world; By damp air and discontented expressions of men. Go home — you do have a home, I hope. (I’d give you mine if I could, but you understand; don’t you?) Retire within the walls, behind Venetians, and Then when you cry, no one will Know, and your pain will have left, and gone To all those, who have not learned The simplicity of tears. Mary Callan S6 Utopia i am a man immersed in society. Thus, my vision of Utopia is a personal and limited vision only to a certain extent Nonetheless, there are certam aspects of life and civilization that I want and need around me: Without them life would be merely barren existence My hopes for my future lifestyle begin with a concept of personal anarchy: a situation in which I would be left alone to do what I want. (This de- sire probably stems from the petty rules and bickering, the bureaucratic high school routine through which I now suffer daily.) I know that I can act responsibly and humanely: I know that I can live my life without interfering with the lives of others. This anarchy will not negate laws that exist for the good of society: I don’t want to murder someone with impunity, nor should anyone else be able to do so. Simply. I would like to be able to do what I want, when I want. But this personal anarchy is not an end in itself. What is more important are the things which I will do during the time my freedom will give me. It will be these things that create a utopic situation: all the freedom in the world will do no good if it is wasted or abused. The formula begins with good friends. No life would be worth living without people who could share and enjoy your experiences with you; with- out people in whom you could confide; who could help you through bad or upsetting times, and even more importantly, whom you could help through their bad times. Life would certainly be empty without those whom you could love and be loved by. This is the essential first ingredient. What follows? Several things, which I will call various types of exercise. Most important of these for me is intellectual exercise, the process by which a mind is kept interested, interesting, active and alert. The process goes far beyond reading good books. The New York Time every day. and various interesting magazines. It goes far beyond watching educational TV. These are but a start. What I need are discussions and debates, not contentious, but stimulating and provocative. New ideas must be derived, tested by other minds, resynthesized, rediscussed. I remember reading that Clarence Darrow. when he was a young lawyer, belonged to a group called the Henry George Single Tax Club. Speakers were heard and discussions were held. The image of a group of influential and intelligent men sitting in worn leather chairs before a warm fire, eyes shut now and then in thought, while a brilliant exchange of ideas went on. has never faded. No one cared if one or the other of them was ugly. rich, or queer. What mattered was what you said, and why and how you said it. Men thought about the dilemnas of the day. and then went to their jobs and used these ideas in their lonely efforts to change the world. This is an ideal worth striving for. Cultural and physical exercise follow close behind. I will never let go of my music, classical or otherwise. I may not know a great deal about music, but like Alex. I could not conceive of living without a little of old Ludwig Van now and then to stir the spirit Music is also part of the move- ment of which I have considered myself a part for a long time. Pete Seeger often expresses my emotions and my hopes better than anyone. He is the wonderful cultural expressor of a very political, and very revolutionary lifestyle. The fine arts are gradually becoming a part of my cultural future, too. In short. I would like to continue and expand the beginning I have already made — movies, plays, museums and concert halls are all part of my future. About physical exercise, suffice it to say two things: I hope I will continue to participate in at least as many sports as necessary to keep myself from getting an American, heart-attackable body. Second. I want to continue to hike and cycle. These two are the instruments that I use for bring- ing myself into contact with nature. The feeling of in-touchness with nature that is achieved is extremely important in order to maintain a neces- sary perspective about life. Yet my utopia would not be complete or satisfying unless I could believe that others in the world were gaining the opportunity to achieve their own personal goals, free of repression, and of the poverty of the mind, spirit, and certainly of the pocketbook that we all seek to escape. This de- sire is more than an idle wish. I believe that it has become a part of my psychological being. I have been reared on a diet of Jewish social consci- ence — my Grandfather has been losing his personal battles for the welfare of others for the past fifty years, and he has not given up yet — and his ideals are part of me. Frequently, in recent months, the urge to act has diminished. But my mind has refused to stop, continually seeing the bloody injustice around me. evaluating, analyzing, too often despairing. My personal utopia lies in something more than a sense of personal freedom to fulfill my wishes although that is an integral part, of course. I hope that I will not rest until things have begun to change. I must act. for as I said. I am a man immersed in society. My utopia, aside from the personal amenities of life that I seek, lies in a social utopia. Thus. I will not be satisfied unless I am working to create a society free of its cruel hunger and poverty, free of its death dealing competition, free of its senseless, useless violence. In short, it means the adoption and practice of what Paul Ehrlich has called the new values. It means becom- ing one of the new men : They know what Stuart Udall is talking about when he says that more and bigger is not necessarily better.' They understand that the deaths of an American manne from a Viet Cong booby trap and of a Vietnamnese child from a USAF napalm are equally tragic — and that their blood stains our hands as well as the hand of those we permit to remain in positions of power and responsibility. They know that a pile of junk from Detroit will never substitite for a loving friend in bed — that night base- ball will never replace sex. They know that the President's Commission on Obscenity and pornography should have been studying racism among our politicians, ecolog- ical advertisements by bigtime polluters (ecopornography). generals in search of bigger budgets, the A.E.C.. the D.O.D . the A M.A . and the National Association of Manufacturers, and the Chamber of Commerce This group of our young also un- derstands that the massive violence we are visiting on Indochina does not justify the death of one student or janitor in a bombed campus building They see that the resi dues of violence lose their toxicity slowly and that, if the new men stoop to the level of the old. then the game is lost My utopic vision is that the game will be won. partly because of me and those I will touch throughout my life Robert Master Dr. Paul Ehrlich. Richard Harriman. p 133 How to be a Survivor. MOMENTS BEFORE SLEEP The night is black with only the diamond stars to light the sky. The sand is cool and damp now, for the warmth of the sun is long gone. I sit and watch the lights on the opposite shore. They are the only signs of life around me. The lapping of the waves is the single break in the silence. All is still. The sun has gone to rest and most people are deep in dreams of faraway places. I am alone on the beach, a solitary figure on the sand. The breeze tosses my hair with long, cool fingers as I lay back to read the message of the sky. I have been here so many times before, each time unlike another. My mind goes in and out with the tide until I am lost in sleep. Mary Callan WHAT DO WE KNOW? Suppose that mankind had evolved without eyes. I wonder how he’d try to explain the singing of the birds or the pounding waves of the ocean. How would the hot sun feel with no knowledge of light? How would a rose smell without knowing its form? So many of these mysteries would be solved if only he could see. In a certain sense we may be blind. Just as a man without eyes could never explain color, we cannot understand death. But with a sense that goes beyond a single lifetime, death would no longer be a mystery. Answers to questions such as the purpose of life, its ori- gin, good and evil might also be solved with another sense. Never- theless, while a blind man acquir- ing sight could solve some prob- lems there always remain others outside his grasp. Even with an in- finity of senses, could we know everything? I saw a boot floating down stream. It was an old boot, torn at the toes. The bottom of it had holes and was all worn out. Its color was a dark brown. I don’t know how it got to be in the water. Someone probably didn’t want to wear it any longer and decided to throw it in. However, there it was and there it might stay forever unless someone decides to take it out. Just one little old boot, that may be doomed to stay there forever. Marvin Berg poem for old friends everywhere and what about the things we never got to do what of all the places we never went and all the poems about us i’d always meant to write what of all the songs i never sangto you? what happened to all the beaches we wanted to walk or all the movies we would have seen or the pictures i never got to paint for you what of all the early mornings we were goingto share? did our favorite colors change? or did we just find new people? and what about the things we never got to do? they’re with other warm quiet memories and like the other memories very gently they'll slip away . . . cindy bailen OLD AGE When you grow old you will learn that the rest of your life is living minute by minute knowingyou are no longer useful to society. I’ve seen old friends sitting in the park feeding peanuts to squirrels. They sit together on a hard cold bench in their thread bare coats, talking about their memories, aches, and pains, which is all society has left for them. Some old folks have no one. They know the true meaning of total loneliness. They wake up every morningto a breakfast of solitude. Many old hearts have been broken and minds shattered, because they knowthey are not only unwanted by society, but by their own children. I, the granddaughter of a wonderful woman, beg humanity to reach out and touch these people, with love and understanding. Someday we will all be old. Yes, Reality tapped me on the shoulder, grasped me by the hand, (when I was not aware) And firmly pulled me into the world of ADULTHOOD, DUTY, MATURITY, RESPONSIBILITY; those dignified adjectives toward which all youth must strive. So gently to life did Reality shackle me, That I did not perceive until too late, That I could never return.
