Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1969 volume:

5 You have been told that, even like a chain, you are as weak as your weakest link. This is but a half truth. You are also as strong as your strongest link. To measure you by your smallest deed is to reckon the power of the ocean by the frailty of its foam. To judge you by your failures is to cast blame upon the seasons for their inconstancy. 7 . . . alone you stand with nobody near when a trembling distant voice, unclear, startles your sleeping ears to hear that somebody thinks they really found you... A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it. JOLLYgpp|| p — ROGER I , % ' . | 12 14 We have lived not in the proportion to the number of years that we have spent on the earth, but in proportion as we have enjoyed. 19 I wish to live ever as to derive my satisfactions and inspirations from the commonest events, everyday phenomena, so that w hat my senses outwardly perceive, my daily walk, the conversation of my neighbors, may inspire me, and I may dream of no heaven but that which lies around me. 21 . . . getting up .. . DONALD A. GRANT—PRINCIPAL TO THE CLASS OF 1969 Thank you for the opportunity of including a personal message in the 1969 Command- er. The “Our World” theme is indeed an appropriate one for these troubled times. While your elders do not understand all manifestations of youth unrest, be assured that they are as puzzled and frustrated over the situation “Our World” is in as you are. Optimism with positive action must be your approach. Our forefathers gave us a great nation. For four years in the 1860’s, we did our best—it seemed—to destroy it. Now it is in danger again. Your elders beseech you, in the name of humanity, to save this great coun- try and perhaps the world. You are the government of tomorrow. Where we have failed. I have faith that your generation—of whom a great percentage have much more “on the ball” than did preceding ones, in the matter of training, initiative, humane intent, in- terest in government and desire for involvement in world affairs—can solve our problems. As trite as it sounds, until there is a universal return to certain humane behavior pat- terns epitomized by the “Golden Rule”—whatever your spiritual interpretation of it may be. humanity will flounder in a morass of dangerous confusion. Time is running out! Please succeed where your elders have failed! The best wish I can express to you is that you have the opportunity to seek true happi- ness. and—one and all—the right and privilege of seeking to attain successfully your life goal. Good Fortune! MR. ROBERT ENDERLE—ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Assistant principals MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1969 As you leave MacArthur High School this year re- member—You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self confidence, as old as your fears; you are as young as your hope, as old as your despair. You do not grow old merely by the number of years that you live; you grow old only by deserting your ideals. Years wrinkle your skin, but giving up enthusiasm wrinkles your soul. Fortunate are we mortals in discovering that each of us has a fountain of youth within us—that to keep it ever flowing we need only be confident of the future and strong in the courage of our convictions. Best wishes for success in the world ahead. TO THE CLASS OF 1969: Those of you who remember history are aware that we cannot truly blame the “over-thirty” gener- ation for all of the problems existing in the world today. This world of ours is, at least for the time being, the only one we have. We should be planning meth- ods and approaches to cause the changes we would like to see, rather than simply bemoaning the existing state of things. John F. Kennedy said it well—a month before he was martyred: “. . . look forward to a great future for America ... a future in which our country will match its military strength with our moral restraint, its wealth with our wisdom, its power with our purposes . . . Look forward to an America which will not be afraid of grace and beauty . . . which will reward achieve- ment in business or statecraft . . . which commands respect throughout the world not only for its strength but for its civilization as well.” It is you—the class of 1969 and succeeding grad- uating classes who have the opportunity to help the United States mirror this glowing picture. 37 MR. ARTHUR FREUD—ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL TO THE CLASS OF 1969 Dear Graduates, “Our World is your theme, and I appreciate the depth of vision that this theme conjures. The world today is not the world of yesterday. Its distances have been shortened by modern travel; its vistas have been length- ened by space probes; its people are losing their nation- al and race distinctions. Our world used to be the eminent domain of the rich, the powerful, the aristocratic, the rulers. Our world is really ours today. We, the ordinary citizens of the world, now hold vast abilities to affect the future. If we use them for the good of humanity everywhere, it will truly be “Our World. If we don’t, it may be “nobody's world. Please accept my congratulations for reaching a mile- stone in your education. If, as you leave us, the chal- lenge becomes clear that you must contribute to mak- ing this “Our World” rather than “nobody’s world,” then I would feel a sense of satisfaction and hope for the future. We sell loans, checking accounts, savings bonds and many unique banking services. But for a brief moment we’d like to declare a moratorium on selling. We’d prefer to discuss America. Because America ...the land we love ...is in danger. We believe that the framers of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence voiced an ideal worth preserving. ..forever. We believe that most Americans—regardless of race, creed or color—desire to live in harmony with each other. We believe that the abiding majority of our people don’t want to see this nation tom asunder. Let us therefore clasp the hand of friendship among all of our people. Let us grip these hands tightly together! For unless we do, we court disaster. Ours is a changing and evolving society. It has always been thus, from Plymouth Rock to Concord Bridge to Shiloh to Iivo Jima and to the Mekong Delta. So let’s change and evolve and adapt. But in the process, let us never alter our basic ideal. Let us stand tip proudly and voice our belief in this country of ours. In America! From sea to shining sea!
