Look around. Take a ride in a car, or a walk around the block. Listen to a record, or kick a football. Do something new, or find a new side to something old. Go as quickly as you can, or as slowly as you have to. Open your eyes, your ears, your mind. Discover the world. and discover yourself. The World is a physical thing. Its infinite variety of objects and experiences amounts to nothing unless man is present to encounter them. Man must react to the world if life is to have meaning. The outside world must develop the inside world ... that complex collection of hard facts and vital abstractions that is the mind. Just as man reacts to the physical world, he must experience contact with the human beings about him. The relations which man develops with other men enrich him in mind and spirit. The activities of men ... loving, hating, talking, thinking, writing, building, or aspiring to build ... are the ingredients that make the world a joy to discover. THE COMMANDER 3 General Douglas MacArthur High School Levittown, Long Island New York—Volume 7 Making glass . 'V • ■ • 9 iV - VilV The world is waiting to be discovered. Discover it. People are waiting to be met and known. Meet them. Find what life holds in its immense store of sensations and objects. And, finally, take the sum of all the contacts, all the longings, all the experiences, all the accomplish- ments and all the discoveries, and find yourself. For self- discovery is the essence and object of life, and life, for now at least, is all we have. ... or in a crowd ... 16 18 . .. in knowing how ... vr K [•MS Faculty Advisor Art Advisor Advertising Advisor Business Advisors THE COMMANDER Volume VII Published by the students of Douglas MacArthur High School General —Louis S. DONALD A. GRANT TO THE CLASS OF 1968: The theme of this year's Commander is indeed a fitting one for the era of astounding changes—scientific, social, ethical and moral—in which we live. In your hands rests the destiny of mankind for a generation or more. Preceding generations have left you at a great disadvantage, by failing to “Discover : —How to make humanitarian changes keep pace with scientific change. —How to communicate positively with other races and countries. —How to do away with humanity’s greatest crime—WAR. —How to insure the equality of opportunity intended by the architects of that greatest of all human documents—our Constitution. —How to preserve the great strengtheners of democratic society which once prevailed: the stable family, a meaningful spiritual life in tune with the times, a worthy respect for the founders of our country and for our country itself, to mention only a few. An educator's responsibility to youth is frightening! An educator’s effect on the future of youth can be only minimal. My best, and yet so trite, advice to you is: “Discover thyself and to thine own self be true.” Unless you do, what man knows as “happiness’’—a quality which at best is fleeting and TO THE CLASS OF 1968: Discovery is an exciting word that conjures in the imagination visions of explorers in uncharted seas, or frontiersmen mapping the wilderness, or the pioneers in science and medicine unlocking the secrets of the universe. To some extent, however, the discovery spirit is a state of mind, an approach to life that sees today's experience, as Tennyson says, as an arch through which gleams an untravelled world that invites exploration. We hope that your years at MacArthur High School have provided you with those experiences which broaden vision and understanding of yourself and of life. Joseph E. McDonald Joseph e. McDonald Assistant Principal Administrative Assistants TO THE CLASS OF 1968: ROBERT J. ENDERLE Assistant Principal John H. Stoke said the time to begin anything is now, so do it today. Perhaps you will say you are not ready, that you must give some additional thought to your proposed undertaking. Well, do it today. Begin now. The things you put off are never done. Someone has wisely observed that we can not change yesterday, nor begin on tomorrow until it is here. So all that is left for you and for me is to make every day the best that can be. When you can think about yesterday without regret and tomorrow with- out fear, you will be on the highway to success, be- cause you will be using your todays in the best you know how, and your tomorrows will be rich with promise. Begin now! We at MacArthur have supplied you with the tools of success and the know how to use them. It is now up to you—Begin now! Best Wishes for Success In the World Ahead. Robert J. Enderle TO THE CLASS OF 1968: MR. LOUIS BLUMBERG Discovery” is a fascinating word. It is the focal point of our earthly existence from birth to death. An infant awakens to a world of new discoveries— parents, brothers and sisters, floors, walls, a crib, a playpen, and love. The child discovers his community, school, the nearby woods or city skyscraper, friends, enemies, teachers, books, motion pictures, television, cars, trains, airplanes, hate, truth and love. The adult discovers success, frustration, problems of society, war, depravation, prejudice, hate, truth and love. As young adults, you are about to be illuminated by the discoveries of adult life. How will they affect you? How will you affect them? These are questions that only time and ex- perience will answer. We hope that your educational experience in the schools of District Five has equipped you to meet these discoveries with curios- ity, strength of character, technological and aca- demic skill, and mature judgement. You will do honor to yourselves, your families, and your schools if you meet the challenges of the future with the adventurousness, curiosity and courage to discover.
