THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not go To right the unrightable wrong To love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This is my quest, to follow that star, No matter how hopeless, no matter how far, To fight for the right, without question or pause, To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause. And I know if I only be true To this glorious quest, That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When I’m laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this, That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star. (C) 1965—by Andrew Scott, Inc. Let us begin a quest ... a quest to fulfill the impossible dream of a society in which all mankind partakes in the wealth of nature's resources. Let us search for a world where men may enjoy the freedom demanded by the human spirit. Take heart, for the power is yours. But these dreams become realities only if we have the courage to commit ourselves to the dictates of our conscience. The distress of starving millions, the complexities of nuclear proliferation, and th brutalities of mankind dim the light of the star beyond the horizon. Yet the quest must be continued, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. Man's effort to improve his world and the living conditions of his fellow man is a moral act. To fail is not ignoble. The world will be better, if not for the improvement of man's material level of existence, then for the sheer affirmation of his inherent goodness. From MacArthur High School, we begin our quest. As students, we are grasping the tools which will enable us to fulfill the impossible dream . It is a dream that can be realized, and indeed, must be.
