“
THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not go To right the unrightable wrong To love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This is my quest, to follow that star, No matter how hopeless, no matter how far, To fight for the right, without question or pause, To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause. And I know if I only be true To this glorious quest, That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When I’m laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this, That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star. (C) 1965—by Andrew Scott, Inc. Helena Music Oorp. and Sam Fox Publishing Co. Ini . By special permission. Let us begin a quest ... a quest to fulfill the impossible dream of a society in which all mankind partakes in the wealth of nature's resources. Let us search for a world where men may enjoy the freedom demanded by the human spirit. Take heart, for the power is yours. But these dreams become realities only if we have the courage to commit ourselves to the dictates of our conscience. The distress of starving millions, the complexities of nuclear proliferation, and th brutalities of mankind dim the light of the star beyond the horizon. Yet the quest must be continued, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. Man's effort to improve his world and the living conditions of his fellow man is a moral act. To fail is not ignoble. The world will be better, if not for the improvement of man's material level of existence, then for the sheer affirmation of his inherent goodness. From MacArthur High School, we begin our quest. As students, we are grasping the tools which will enable us to fulfill the impossible dream . It is a dream that can be realized, and indeed, must be. Grant Principal General Douglas MacArthur High School 1967 Commander June, 1967 To the class of 1967: On the eve of your departure from the halls of secondary education, I congratulate those of you who have had the perception to take full advantage of the preparation for a complex life which has been offered you. We thought the “Soaring Sixties to be an incredible decade! I submit that the Unbelievable Seventies'' and the decades to come will surpass anything previously conceived by man, in terms of technological ad- vance! The Impossible Dream we have, will not be impossible to achieve if your generation pays heed to an exhortation which, so far, has fallen on the deaf ears of past generations: the humanities and proper consideration of the rights of all men must—at last—receive your proper consideration! Do not fail to heed the call! Best wishes for the realization of your Impossible Dream are now tendered by your faculty and administration. They will be watching your generation in the years ahe'ad to see if you can and will succeed, where we have failed. 18 General Douglas MacArthur High School 1967 Commander June, 1967 To the class of 1967, Man's progress owes much to those few men of vision who have stood face-to-face with the impossible and refused to be denied. On every frontier of hu- man endeavor, such men have made yesterday's impossible dreams today's realities. Both their vic- tories and their failures have been triumphs of the human spirit, enriching life with dignity and nobility. You must seek and find your own formula for real- izing your impossible dream . Perhaps you will find fulfillment in the advice of Socrates to know your- self , a likely starting point. Your years at MacArthur High School should have started you well along that path. Self-realization for some will be found in the words of Polonius: To thine own self be true. Others will stand with Tennyson's aging Ulysses and determine to seek, to strive, to find, and not to yield. Whatever your course, whatever stars you steer by, may your dreams become visions of what can be, and may your visions become realities. Joseph F. McDonald Assistant Principal Robert J. Enderle Assistant Principal General Douglas MacArthur High School 1967 Commander June, 1967 To the class of 1967, As you entered MacArthur High School four years ago, graduation seemed to be part of a dream in the far distant future. Graduation and the world after high school were something you would have to face some day, but were not of immediate concern. The first year in high school was a year of dreaming of the future, planning to fulfill this dream and ad- justing to the school situation to make this dream come true. During the second and third year of high school you reevaluated your plans and dreams in the light of experiences, both in school and out. You grew more practical, you were a little older and hopefully wiser. At the start of your senior year you felt that you had finally arrived. Perhaps, one of the best things that had ever happened to MacArthur High School. As your senior year drew to an end you began to won- der if you were really ready to accomplish the dream you had been looking forward to for the last four years. It has been my dream, over the past four years, that each of you leave MacArthur with your ideals and ambitions as clear visions of what can be done. Best wishes for success in whatever your dreams for the future may be. Board of Education Mr. Louis Blumberg Superintendent of Schools General Douglas MacArfhur High School 1967 Commander June 1967 To the class of 1967: If I could offer you a philosophy for your life, it would be encompassed by these three words: dignity, service, honesty. Dignity, in my opinion, is a way of life. One conducts himself with dignity,- one respects others' dignity. Dignity is that part of character which distinguishes between crudeness and fineness; between generosity and selfishness; between patience and impatience; between discretion and indiscretion. Service, to me, has also been a way of life—one which I would recommend to you. Service is a reward, not a chore. The server of God and mankind receives more than he gives. To serve your community, your country, your fellowman, and your creed is one of the fulfillments of life that I would wish for you. Honesty has been written about in prose, in poetry, in song, and sometimes in jest. However, honesty is the balm of conscience. Shakespeare in Polonius' speech to Laertes said, This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou const not then be false to any man. And I would add you will not then fear any man, any belief, or any happenstance. Your future is bright, your lives ahead of you; live with dignity, service, and honesty and you will tread the path of satisfaction, fulfillment and reward. The MacArthur Generals, under the experi- enced coaching of John Batorski, heated up the gridiron for their opponents this fall. Utilizing the powerful running team of Whelan and Langridge, and the accurate passing of Q.B.s Cafaro and Allen, the MacArthur squad smashed their way to the school's record year. A sparkling defense held opponents to minimum yardage, in addition to pilfering a large number of enemy passes. They are a tightly knit, spirited team, and in the future, MacArthurites can look forward to even better performances from the many returning veterans. 119 With a display of finely honed teamwork and coordination, the MacArthur Soccer team roared through the 1966 season in ex- cellent form. Outstanding defensive play and an active offense gave opponents more than their share of trouble. After finishing a fine season, the Mac booters, under the adroit direction of Coach Werner Rothschild, are eagerly looking forward to greater success next year. Soccer ’67 TOP ROW L to R: Coach W. Bowling Tennis The Mac Bowling Team had a very fine season this year. The expert alley-fighters, under the direction of Coach Russ Leary, compiled a phenomenal 24—12 league record, placing second in the league, only a half-point behind first place Hicksville. With perform- ances like Steve Weisel's 236 high-game, and his 179 total average, it is no wonder that the team went on to take the Levittown Golden Ball Tournament. Con- crete support was provided by Weiler, Johnson, O'- Brien, and others. The team can be proud of their well-earned success. Often the spirit that a team possesses is more important than their actual won-lost record. The MacArthur Net- men certainly showed this spirit as they enthusiastically battled their way through tough competition. Cheerful and hardworking, the tennis team showed their op- ponents an outstanding example of good sportsman- ship and determination. Daily improvement was fos- tered by the distinctive direction of Coach Fred Froelich. MacArthur tennis fans can look forward to sharp performances in years to come. SITTING l-r J. Kasarsky, M. The MacArthur basketball team combined skill and a keen sense of competition this year to come up with a season full of fine performances. Senior veterans Ken Greene and Tom Cafaro led the team to victories over Jericho, Plainedge, Plainview, and Memorial. The squad also won the Levittown Tournament, beating Island Trees, Division, and Memorial in a two-day series of highly exciting games. Great teamwork and a good eye for the basket were shown by Benenati, Hess, Moore, Oberjosh, and the rest of the squad. These returning veterans will certainly provide an even more exciting season of fast, aggressive play next year, and Coach Bob LoPolla may just be able to look forward to a Division Title banner on his wall. 125 126 Wrestling Team Sweat and strain were the ingredients of a successful MacArthur wrestling squad this year. Under the active instruction of Coach Bill White, the Mac Grapplers went on to compile a winning league record of four wins and three defeats. Several of the high points of the season were the team's defeat of North Shore Cham- pion Island Trees, and the victories of McCausland, McCarthy, and Hochstadt in the Christmas Levittown Tournament. McCausland also went on to take a third place in the North Shore Competition and a fourth in the County Championships. This was one of the toughest seasons ever faced by a MacArthur wrestling team, with matches against Brentwood and Lindenhurst, two of the finest teams on the Island. The entire squad can be proud of this year's performance and can look forward to a bet- ter one next year. TOP ROW—J.V. standing. Manager J. Duffy, R. Worthley, G. Princepe, M. Feldman, J. Although the squad was composed largely of beginners, the expert guidance of Coach Joseph Cleary succeeded in developing a hard working, fast moving team. They ran ex- cellent races against tough competition and finished the season by placing sixth in the County meet at Salisbury Park. Since there will be many return- ing lettermen next year, the Mac Harriers have great expectations of even improved future seasons. STANDING: N. Matesich, R. Cole, M. McCarthy, R. Welch; SITTING: R. The return of an entire six man team of veterans (O'Brien, Weisel, Alagona, Abrahms, George, and Colton) certainly was the key to their success. The overall spirit of the team was an- other important factor. Coach Ken Jahelka and his men should be congratulated for a job well done. The cinders flew this year as Mac Trackmen blazed their way to new heights of performance. The experi- enced coaching of Mr. Joseph Cleary, and the sea- soned veterans of both Cross-country and Indoor Track, aided the team as it smashed many old records and gave opponents a real battle. The streak of record breaking achievements is likely to continue next year due to the large number of returning veterans. FIRST ROW: s. Hammond, M. McCarthy, C. Altman, A. Green, L. Greenberg, J. Indoor Track Baseball Team The 1966-67 season was the first time in MacArthur history that the Cindermen went indoors. The Indoor Track Team made one of the best showings in the county for a first year team. Outstanding perform- ances were given by underclassmen Jeff Richmond and Paul Stenzler in the long distances and seniors Glenn Kaviar, Tom Dubas, and North Shore Champion Sprinter Jim Allhusen. The dedication of Coach Joe Cleary and his trackmen made for a successful first year. Optimism abounds for next season with many top men returning. KNEELING: R. Bruckbauer, R. Hoshino, B. Duffy, R. An excellent combination of pitching, hitting, and field- ing led the baseball team to many victories this year. The team consisted of many seasoned veterans, but enough new players are coming up to insure other fine seasons in future years. Troiano, J. Reser, D. Langridge, S. Freedman, E. Goldman, G. The squad certainly showed a fine calibre of play as returning veterans Cafaro, Whalen, Broich, Hochstadt, Esposito, and others led the way to a great season. Making the best of a very tough schedule, including encounters with perennial league champ Garden City, the squad showed just what the right combination of skill and determination can do. The multitude of young lacrosse enthusiasts seems to assure MacArthur even greater teams in seasons to come. FIRST ROW; T. Hahn, E. Gerstein, S. Broich, R. Esposito, I. Hockstadt, R. Buhmann, R. And I know if I only be true To this glorious quest, That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When Tm laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this, That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star. (C) 1965—by Andrew Scott, Inc.
