Looking at our high school experiences In retrospect, we find many questions unanswered. For example, what has paved our way to this point? No doubt, our persevering spirit provides part of the answer, for Webster defines spirit as courage and enthusi- asm ... Throughout our years at General Douglas MacArthur High School, we have had many ups and downs. In all situations, however, we have attempted to use the courage and enthusiasm necessary to our success. We have tried, for instance, to help our peers to the best of our ability. Our efforts have been fruitful in our class work, our extracurricular activities, and our com- munity endeavors. Thus we have contributed to The Spirit of 1966. There is more to our story, however, than we have told above. Obviously, our friends, parents and teach- ers have contributed their share to our success. They were always available when we had to face obstacles and vicissitudes, and then they helped us to mitigate or to solve our difficulties. And here again, we availed ourselves of all the opportunities opened to us, which, in turn, made us a better part of The Spirit of 1966 . Finally, one other factor must be mentioned here: our environment or surroundings. Our community, both in our school and outside of it, has been significant in our academic life. The teachers at MacArthur and the citizens of Levittown have created the mood conducive to our progress, and thus they too have left their mark in our happy lives. As may be observed, therefore, we were never alone in our endeavors. Many individuals and circumstances played an important role. Thus we were made a part of The Spirit of 1966 .

THE CLASS OF MR. DONALD GRANT PRINCIPAL The class of 1966 proudly dedicates its edition of The Commander to Mr. Donald Grant and Mr. Louis Blum- berg. Before his arrival here, Mr. Grant had experience as teacher and administrator in the Chenango Valley School, the Richfield Springs Central School, and the Penn Yan High School, all upstate. As principal of Jonas E. Salk Junior High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School, Mr. Grant has contributed much to the academic life of District 5. Mr. Grant has many and varied responsibilities, and he has always discharged them with the welfare of our students at heart. In selecting teachers, for ex- ample, he seeks people with a well-rounded person- ality and diversified background. These teachers, in turn, quickly find their place in our teaching and ex- tracurricular activities to become an essential part of our academic endeavors. In his few brief moments of relaxation, our principal listens to jazz music and operates his ham radio. No doubt, here he has much in common with many Mac- Arthurites. From 1935 to 1945, Mr. Blumberg was a teacher of mathematics and science at Woodridge High School, and supervising principal of District 13, Woodridge, New York. For the next sixteen years, he was prin- cipal and superintendent in Fallsburg, and assistant superintendent in Poughkeepsie. As our superintendent since 1961, Mr. Blumberg has been in the center of many changes in District 5. 4
