VOLUME V PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF GENERAL DOUGLAS MacARTHUR HIGH SCHOOL LEVITTOWN, NEW YORK TABLE OF CONTENTS Looking at our high school experiences In retrospect, we find many questions unanswered. For example, what has paved our way to this point? No doubt, our persevering spirit provides part of the answer, for Webster defines spirit as courage and enthusi- asm ... Throughout our years at General Douglas MacArthur High School, we have had many ups and downs. In all situations, however, we have attempted to use the courage and enthusiasm necessary to our success. We have tried, for instance, to help our peers to the best of our ability. Our efforts have been fruitful in our class work, our extracurricular activities, and our com- munity endeavors. Thus we have contributed to The Spirit of 1966. There is more to our story, however, than we have told above. Obviously, our friends, parents and teach- ers have contributed their share to our success. They were always available when we had to face obstacles and vicissitudes, and then they helped us to mitigate or to solve our difficulties. And here again, we availed ourselves of all the opportunities opened to us, which, in turn, made us a better part of The Spirit of 1966 . Finally, one other factor must be mentioned here: our environment or surroundings. Our community, both in our school and outside of it, has been significant in our academic life. The teachers at MacArthur and the citizens of Levittown have created the mood conducive to our progress, and thus they too have left their mark in our happy lives. As may be observed, therefore, we were never alone in our endeavors. Many individuals and circumstances played an important role. Thus we were made a part of The Spirit of 1966 . THE CLASS OF MR. DONALD GRANT PRINCIPAL The class of 1966 proudly dedicates its edition of The Commander to Mr. Donald Grant and Mr. Louis Blum- berg. Before his arrival here, Mr. Grant had experience as teacher and administrator in the Chenango Valley School, the Richfield Springs Central School, and the Penn Yan High School, all upstate. As principal of Jonas E. Salk Junior High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School, Mr. Grant has contributed much to the academic life of District 5. Mr. Grant has many and varied responsibilities, and he has always discharged them with the welfare of our students at heart. In selecting teachers, for ex- ample, he seeks people with a well-rounded person- ality and diversified background. These teachers, in turn, quickly find their place in our teaching and ex- tracurricular activities to become an essential part of our academic endeavors. In his few brief moments of relaxation, our principal listens to jazz music and operates his ham radio. No doubt, here he has much in common with many Mac- Arthurites. From 1935 to 1945, Mr. Blumberg was a teacher of mathematics and science at Woodridge High School, and supervising principal of District 13, Woodridge, New York. For the next sixteen years, he was prin- cipal and superintendent in Fallsburg, and assistant superintendent in Poughkeepsie. As our superintendent since 1961, Mr. Blumberg has been in the center of many changes in District 5. 4 1966 SALUTES . . . MR. LOUIS BLUMBERG SUPERINTENDENT Working unobtrusively but with determination, he has created an atmosphere conducive to success in the teaching-learning process. For instance, he has placed himself in the midst of problems to help teachers and students. Since coming here, Mr. Blumberg has seen the improvement of facilities for the training of handi- capped and vocational students, the reduction in class sizes, the setting up of classes for advanced and slow students, and the building of the auditorium at Levittown Memorial High School. Through his open line of communication to the public, he has secured the enthusiastic community support for his programs, many of which have become reality. Thus a part of the picture he envisions for District 5 is ours now. When time permits and he can get away from his heavy schedule, Mr. Blumberg enjoys non-fiction books. For example, when the interviewers mentioned Ian Fleming's books, he classified them as intri- guing . In addition, he likes fishing, boating and golf. He shows his interest in many sports by his presence at our interscholastic competitions. Those who appreciate the principles of education in modern society are pleased with Mr. Grant and Mr. Blumberg at the helm of our school and district, for in deed and word, they give full expression to those principles. General Douglas MacArthur High School and District 5 are the beneficiaries of the efforts and experience of these two gentlemen. 5 In the beginning ... Our school, here In its early stages, was to become a source of pride for Mr. Grant and Mr. Blumberg. Inside the cornerstone laid by Mr. Grant went MacArthur's first yearbook. Who knows? Maybe in a few centuries that yearbook will be uncovered. Left to right: Lt. Col. Robert Kissel, Eli Mellon, Harold Woodhull, Robert Hoshino, Louis Blumberg, Donald Grant. Present with Mr. Grant and Mr. Blumberg at MacArthur's official dedication was General Blackshear Bryan, shown here making the official dedication address. 6 Mr. Grant, who takes an active interest in the accomplishments of his students, is shown here congratulating Marjorie Mat- luck at the 1965 induction ceremony of the Honor Society. At the 1962 Sports Award Night, Mr. Grant and Mr. Blumberg were there with Mr. LaPolla and Mr. Vagts. Our Principal and Superintendent are al- ways on hand at such occasions to praise deserving students. Mr. Blumberg is on hand to give support to our Generals. His camera is ready to preserve for posterity any outstanding play of our team. 7 MR. Joseph McDonald A smile, a pleasant word, a true regard for MacArthur students— these are the characteristics of our Assistant Principal, Mr. McDonald. His concern for MacArthur's repu- tation has played an important part in establishing a fine name for our school. He is striving constantly not only to uphold but also to ex- ceed this fine reputation. MacArthur students are well aware of Mr. Mc- Donald's interest in them and hold him in high regard. Cooperation between Mr. McDonald and Mr. Grant has been essential in en- abling our students to derive the most from school at MacArthur. MR. ROBERT ENDERLE With his friendly disposition, it is easy to see why our Assistant Prin- cipal, Mr. Enderle, gets along so well with the students. He possesses a frankness in his attitude which allows the students to realize that they are his prime concern. Mr. En- derle's dedication to MacArthur- ites is returned by the students' high opinion of him. The adminis- trative team at the head of our school—Mr. Enderle, Mr. McDonald and Mr. Grant—has helped maintain the spirit of enthusiasm on the part of the students toward school activ- ities. 8 MRS. C. HARAHAN As Mr. Grant's secretary, Mrs. C. Harahan Is kept busy with her du- ties. She is constantly engaged in behind the scenes work necessary in the administration of our school. Her personal dedication to the many and varied activities of the principal's office is recognized by the class of 1966. MRS. L ALDROVANDI Mrs. L. Aldrovandi, our Superinten- dent's active personal secretary, enjoys her work a great deal. Knowing that she is an essential person in our district, she under- takes each new endeavor with en- thusiasm and pride. On several oc- casions, Mrs. Aldrovandi has helped even the editors and ad- viser of The Commander, who hold her in high esteem. No phase of work in our school district escapes her attention and interest, and this is to the credit of the Superinten- dent's office. 9 With Mrs. Harahan's able assistance, Mr. Grant carries on with his work. Mr. Grant pauses a moment to think of MacArthur's outstanding academic achieve- ments after he hos congratulated our National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. 10 Mr. McDonald and Mr. Enderle are caught unaware, discussing an important Mac- Arthur event. They avail themselves of every opportunity to deal with every situation. Douglas Karpiloff listens intently to Mr. Blumberg's candid answers to his questions duri nn nn intorvi w 11 To the Class of 1966: Your theme The Spirit of 1966 probably has many of the characteristics of any other period, and yet it must also have some differences. Its characteristics in common with men and societies of other periods you learned early in life. Its differences from the spirit of other years , on the other hand, you find in your academic and social experiences. It is in the development of the latter that I hope our efforts have been fruitful. Elliptically defined, spirit is the principle of conscious life, and as such, it is that of 1966; yet it must mean much more to find itself associated with any age. It should also encompass your awareness of the life of others—their happiness. Though the principle above- mentioned probably has its fullest expression in the sine qua non of a successful life, which is the under- standing among men, the spirit is constantly being modified by the reactions of man to artificial and natural changes in his world. And the quality of your own reactions takes its character and form through the learning experiences in your education. It is to this last area that educators may contribute if they are going to help in your societal stability and hap- piness. It is my expectation that we might have helped you to understand and appreciate those aspects and differences that make the spirit of 1966 meaning- ful in your lives. If we have succeeded here, you will contribute to human understanding, and to the peace so desperately sought by men everywhere. Sincerely, Louis Blumberg Mr. Louis Blumberg A busy day is drawing to an end for Mr. Blumberg and his hard-working secretary, Mrs. Aldrovandi. Our three office secretaries, Mrs. Gittleman, Mrs. McGrath, and Mrs. Rode are always involved in each day's important activities. Though invariably buried in heavy loads of work, they are ready with a smile to offer assistance to all comers . As our roving secretary, Mrs. Gittleman helps Mr. Enderle, Mr. McDonald, and many students and teachers. She has come to the assistance of even yearbook editors and advisers. No wonder, we all think she is one of our kind friends in the office. As the latest addition to our office staff, Mrs. McGrath has quickly found a niche in our hearts. We appreciate her ever-ready helping hand. Everyone in our school knows that Mrs. Rode is indebted to the telephone company, for without the little instrument she would have no job. Can you imagine all our sick students not receiving that ex- pected soothing call? How many of you have ever missed that call when you were ill? Mrs. Rode's pleas- ant disposition makes her the ideal choice for our Girl Friday . Without these three amiable and capable secre- taries, our school would not function. Therefore, we offer our appreciation and thanks to them. Mrs. E. Gittleman Mrs. A. Rode Mrs. M. McGrath JOHN AFFIGNE English Columbia University, B.S. In the last quarter of the open- er against Carey, fullback Steve Morean scored, and for the tying point, quarterback Dan Curtin handed off to halfback Dave Lang- ridge. The officials, however, ruled that Langridge was stopped before the goal line and the Generals lost a tough game 13—12. The season ended with the traditional game against Memorial, where the Generals almost ran off to a quick lead. A pass from Curtin to end Bill Pedersen brought the Generals within scoring range, but the Panther line held. With Memorial leading 6—0, MacArthur tackle John Bonich picked up a fumble and scored. Morea made the extra point. Memorial, however, scored again, but MacArthur retaliated with a successful 70-yard march. The drive was led by Langridge and a pass to Steve Freedman. Morea finally went over for the extra point, but the game ended in a 13—13 tie. Morea made the North Shore All-Star Team. He was the high scorer for the Generals. TENNIS The tennis team brought MacArthur to first league championship of the year, clinching first place only days before the Cross Country Team. Coach Richard Johnston parlayed experience and desire for a ten and two—league record. He used seven seniors and five juniors in different combina- tions. Most of the team's victories were close, with come- from-behind efforts. The reason lies in the fact that its greatest strength was in doubles, which are played last. Many times darkness shrouded the court before the match was decided. The team beat Floral Park, Jericho, Locust Valley, Island Trees, and Mineola, twice each, losing only to Carle Place, which tied the Generals for first place. The tennis team has improved steadily since its first year of competition. Its first winning season came in 1964, and in 1965 its first Division championship. The Generals should be strong again next year, with a nucleus of experienced players returning. Goals were scored by Brad Asch, sophomore Rich Hoshino, and David Dangler, who scored two. In their second game against Syosset, after having lost previously 3—0, the Generals proved themselves. Don Granger, who was undefeated in dual competition this year, took second place in the County meet, and came in fourth in the State Championship. Gary Roden also qualified for this race by finishing twelfth in the County. By the way. Cross Country meets are not scored the same as other sports. GEORGE DELLER ON THE MOUND. 157 The MacArthur Cindermen, led by coaches Mr. Cleary and Mr. Belen, are looking forward to a promising season. The track team has been practicing hard and is starting to whip into fine shape. Returning lettermen and new blood from Salk seem to predict a well rounded team. Outstanding performance can be ex- pected by Don Granger in the mile run, Gary Rodin in the 2 mile run, Ed Kiernan, Mike Moher, and Lance Borof- sky in the pole vault, Jim Allhusen in the 220 dash and others. Generally, MacArthur High School can expect a 100% effort by each of the MacArthur Cindermen and coaches. The team is looking forward to its first winning season. GOLF The MacArthur Golf Team may astound everyone this year and come in first in North Shore I. After a poor performance last year, the team is not rated too highly. But, if team members continue their un- expectedly fine play. North Shore I is in for some surprises. One of these surprises will be a victory over Farmingdale, a team that has not lost a match in the last five years. There are many new faces on the team this year. If just two of these prove they can win in a varsity match, then we're going to be tough to beat. If they can't win, well ... better luck next year. 159 S. Dudley THERE WE GO!!
