GENERAL DOUGLAS MacARTHUR HIGH SCHOOL LEVITTOWN, NEW YORK COMMANDER TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY PAGE 4 SENIORS AND UNDERCLASSMEN PAGE 22 From birth to death, we strive to unlock the secret of our world. At first our efforts are feeble and undisciplined, but through experience and education, we become more capable of coping with high-walled obstacles that face us. Our increased comprehension of life's phe- nomena enables us to shape these barriers into doors that open onto new vistas of understanding. Our years in school are vitally important for the development of our character and our minds. Our senior year marks the culmination of the first stage of our education. Regardless of what we do after gradu- ation, we will have bridged a crucial gap in life. There is no turning back, the world is upon us, and we must face it, and wrestle with it. We have left behind a part of ourselves, behind the walls of school and home, but we have gained a new facet to our being, a new ma- turity and insight. It is a beginning and an end—a decisive link in the chain of existence. 11 W ■ ■ i Mr. Donald A. Grant Employing his valuable experience as a football coach and classroom teacher, Mr. Grant has been at the helm of the MacArthur faculty and adminis- tration for three years. This year he has returned to guide us in our scholastic endeavors and help us on the difficult road to active and worthwhile citizen- ship. It is behind his door that we have found many1 answers to seemingly impossible problems. Mr. Grant recognizes that the members of our grad- uating class have emulated their worthy predecessors, and have not only met the challenges of the present but have also reached new milestones for their future success. Principal Congratulations to the Class of 1965 on the publi- cation of MacArthur's fourth yearbook. The best ad- vice I could give young high school graduates in the Soaring Sixties is to meet their family and citizen- ship responsibilities forthrightly and with determina- tion. Society frankly admits that the future of our democracy depends most seriously on the ability of Tomorrow's Adult Citizens to re-evaluate and re- establish the moral and ethical tone in America for which our forefathers struggled so diligently. Tomorrow's adults must seek the means to open doors which have closed into apparently solid walls to today's society. The doors ore there to be re- opened. They are the doors of ethical conduct, re- sponsible government, respect for morality and au- thority, and re-affirmation of the home as a stabilizing influence in modern society. I wish the members of the Class 1965 Godspeed. May the wisdom of Solomon, the courage of a Lincoln, the ethics of a Wilson and the patriotism and devotion to country of a Patrick Henry go with you always! Sincerely, Principal Mr. Joseph McDonald Mr. McDonald's rapport with students is demonstrated by the way he carries out his routine tasks such as the morning reports. In his daily announcements, he gives the news and upcoming events cheerfully, and always ends with a sin- cere Have a good day! This kind of warmth makes the day more pleasant, all typical of his personal touch with the student body. Mr. McDonald has a practical philoso- phy of education. According to him, the end of education is the development of the whole person—intellect, personal- ity, sense of values and judgments. As further espoused by him, education is the sine-qua-non for a life-time of learning to enjoy life, art, beauty and good books For the class of 1965, Mr. McDonald has opened doors of opportunity by encour- aging students to follow their own con- science and always adhere to their ideals Robert Enderle Fairness and friendliness have made Mr. Enderle quite popular with the student body. His cheerful smile has generated strong student-ad- ministration rapport. A typical day will find him completely involved in student activities from interviewing pupils to cheering our teams. Prior to assuming his present po- sition, Mr. Enderle had been the ac- tive chairman of the Business De- partment. The class of 1965 has for- tunately been a first to benefit from the academic though relaxed approach of its new assistant prin- cipal. Mr. Enderle is particularly inter- ested in us because as one of our Freshman advisers, he has watched our growth with enthusiasm. He hopes that our high school educa- tion will instill in us values that will help us to take advantage of social and vocational opportunities. 7 Louis Blumberg Superintendent of Schools MacArthur Seniors: From time immemorial, man has always at- tempted to conquer the seemingly insurmountable. However, the greater the task, the greater was man's determination, perserverance and motiva- tion. Challenges have led to accomplishments,- impossibilities have become realities,- the utterly impractical and hopeless have evolved into every- day necessities. Athletes attempting to run a four-minute mile, scientists searching to land on the moon, techni- cians trying to find ways of relaying pictures live to the other side of the globe, doctors seek- ing the cure for many crippling diseases such as polio, once were all faced with the blank wall of impossibility, hopelessness and despair; but the wall was not impenetrable; the barrier was not impregnable,- the hurdles and obstacles were not insurmountable. There was a door and only the key had to be found. Once these doors are opened, other walls may appear—but these, too, will crumble as the door is opened wide. The members of the graduating class of 1965, of the General Douglas MacArthur High School, will face many walls. But they have the key—a master key—their education. It will unlock many doors. They have only to use it and let the sunlight of life and hope shine through. Superintendent o( Schools Board of Education Bernard Morgenstern, Secretary; Vic- tor Buck, Vice President; Angela C. Among other responsibilities, they pleasantly welcome visitors, serve os the link between many segments of school life —faculty, administration and student body—by helping enthusiastically in every situation from guarding forgotten lunches to locating people. Our secretaries are without question a vital group in the proper functioning of this school. How is your attendance record coming along Mrs. Rod ? I am a freshman ... Being a freshman is a little frightening; being a freshman is a lot of fun ... best of all, it's the beginning. High school is chatting at lockers, exams studies, passes, buddies, gripes, things to do, a point of view .. . teachers , books, labs, essay questions—make a stab, football teams—rahrahrah, freshman picnics —what a scream . .. hard work, homework, slow work, no work ... 85 Sue Rea crowns Jeanne Carlson queen of the Junior Prom. College exams, rings, rings with sparkling blue stones, a bouncy derby, a Big Senior button . . . I am a senior. I walk, talk and condescend. I lead the school. I set the example. I have a blast. The Perfect Couple. Anyone for dancing? Never underestimate the Seniors '65. Hey Rito. where did you get those crazy shoes? School, rules, fools, tools. I am on upper classman. I am spirited. I walk in the rain selling candy, paint stripes on awnings, day in and out, eat 15tf hamburger. I sacrifice; I work for one night to top all the hours of fun ... one night of Springtime in Paris. My name is Steve, what's yours? The queen and her court. TOP ROW: W. Beekman, S. Bavaro, M Birmingham, w. Baltzersen, S. Anderson, w. Berninger. S. Aldrovandi. p. Benenati, P. Aldrovandi, K. Beesch. They are your rallying points: to build courage when cour- age seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn. General Douglas MacArthur Memorial Early in April 1964, another great Ameri- can joined the ranks of a distinguished and select group in the cause of liberty. Patriot- ism, dedication, and righteousness were the precepts of his life. General Douglas Mac- Arthur was a thinker although his reputation and flair were always those of a combat soldier. As a brilliant and courageous gener- al, he devoted his life to the defense of lib- erty, human dignity and the honor of his country. Since the inscribing of General MacAr- thur's name on our building, we have felt a moral responsibility to uphold his ideals— Duty, Honor and Country. With the rest of the world, we too mourned him. The simple service of eulogy by religious and patriotic leaders demonstrated our feeling for the great American general. The highlight of the season was the non-league opening game win over the Levittown Memorial Panthers. The 12—6 victory was the first in the annual rivalry for the Generals. It was particularly satisfying for Coach Batorski, who coached at Memo- rial last year. The team overcame Memorial's greater size, speed and experience to upset the Panthers. The team's single league victory was an unexpected, shocking defeat of powerful Plainedge. MacArthur came from behind to beat the Red Devils 18—14. MacArthur had several outstanding players; Line- backer George Krause, and Bill Haywood, on defense; Jack Cusack who ran well from the half-back spot un- til he was injured in the Clarke game,- and Cliff Deem whose punting put the opponent in the hole many times and kept us in the game. Tackle Jim Duffy was his best all year. Next fall, with the return of our backfield: Dan Curtin, this year's starting quarterback, Steve Morea, Bob Walsh and Frank White, Mac Arthur should be able to establish its position in the league. Under the direction of its new coach, Mr. McCleary, Salk track coach last year, the cross country team finished its season with an impressive 5—3 overall, and 3—3 league records. The team beat Levittown Memorial in a non-league match, the first time the two schools have competed in cross country, during the halftime of the annual football game. Don Granger and Gary Rodin were outstanding all year. Don finished first in a field of more than 150 runners in the Class E race held at Van Cortland Park, and placed fifth in the North Shore finals. Richard McNamara ran well, consistently finishing in the top of the field. A new school record of better than 12:30 was set at the team's home course in Bethpage. Several mem- bers of the team bettered the old mark. Don Granger and Gary Rodin finish one. two against Memorial. Mark Dye, Gene Parine. and Richard Scott get set for two miles. Tennis Mac Arthur's tennis team completed its most successful season in its three year history, posting an 8—6 record, and placing fourth in its league. Coached by Mr. Johnston of our Mathematics Department, the Generals defeated Mineola, Island Trees, Syossef and Levittown Division. Most of the players will return next fall since Stu Cojac was the only senior on the squad. Among them will be Dennis Markman, who had several good matches, in- cluding one against Jericho that lasted for two days. Jon Asch showed a big improvement this year, and is one of six team members who will compete next year with two years varsity experience. For this reason, Mr. Johnston is enthusiastic over the prospect of a highly successful 1965 season. Dennis Markman in a difficult backhand position. TOP ROW: J. Gellmon, J. Asch, R. Stim, M. US Basketball Mac Arthur's basketball team finished the season with a 5—7 league record for fourth place in its league, and on 8—10 overall mark. The Generals were hampered by a lack of height and ex- perience. All of last year's starting team, Pete Caparell, George Bauer, John Kohlman, Ken Harding, and Willie Wilshusen did not return for the 1964-65 season. Bob Hurley, Bill Moros, and Richard Wolf were the only holdovers on the varsity. Bill Moros was high scorer for the year with a total of 311 points, and Richard Wolf was next with 279. The team's game high mark of 33 was set also by Moros against the Farmingdale Dalers. Our players once again gained the finals of the Christmas Tour- nament, but failed to win the Golden Sneaker Trophy. After beat- ing Island Trees in a preliminary game, they lost to Memorial's Panthers in the descisive contest. One of the team's most exciting moments came in its second game with Syosset. The Generals fought hard, and came close to upsetting the No. 1 ranked Braves, but Syosset managed a scoring spurt midway through the fourth quarter to win eventually, 65—53. Bill Pedersen, a junior, and Bob Hurley were tigers on defense, and strong rebounders for MacArthur. Jim little Hurl Hurley sparked several drives with his two-hand long-bomb shot. Five varsity players: Jim Hurley, Bill Pederson, Danny Curtain, George Deller, and Steve Morea will be back next year. Coach LaPolla is looking forward to a promising season with these and the junior varsity stars: Ken Green, Dave Longridge and Tom Ca- faro. The grapplers compiled a 9—3—1 record, making them one of the top North Shore teams. In league competition, the Generals came in second place with a 5—2 record. A determined core of seniors Steve Meltzer, Jeff Jost, Paul Reagan, Bill Butler, Craig Under- wood, Ken Andreski, Gene Kleinfeller, Craig Potts, and former North Shore champ and team captain Dennis DeTore, was instrumental in the squad's success. The team had many excitingly close matches during the year. One, against Berner, proved to be its toughest winning match. The Generals won a neck-and-neck battle, 22—21. Dennis DeTore's 1 —0 win on an escape in the last ten seconds, and a big pin by Jeff Jost with five seconds left were highlights of the meet. Fine wrestling during the regular season en- abled the team to enter eight men in the North Shore, and seven in the County tournaments. Coach Bill White, who deserves a great deal of credit for the General's success, is looking for- ward to another fine season next year. Our only undefeated wrestler, Tim Kemp, will be back, along with Bob McCausland, Rich McCormick, Brian Sawyer, Mark McCarthy, Ron Chon, Lewis Jacovelli, Bob Hyams, and Greg De Clemente. They defeated Farmingdale, Plainedge, Syosset and Clarke, and earned a 2—1 — 1 non-league record for their best season ever. The Gen- erals, coached by Mr. Rothschild, placed second in the league behind Hicks- ville, a team they tied 2—2 with the help of an amazing score from 50 yards out by Paul Cohen. In a crucial contest with Syosset late in the season, the Generals won 4—0 to gain a tie for first place, but their final game loss to Clarke knocked them back into second. Co-captains George Lachat was the team's high scorer. He shared honors with goalie Eric Schneider and forward Well- ington Chan, who were selected for the all- league team. Halfback Co-captain Mike Ro- bertson, forwards Frank Barile, and John Mc- Caffrey, and fullback Steve Gleich played good ball all season. Varsity players Chan, and his brother Ron, Brian Shorter, Al Van Dyke, Chris Onken, Paul Cohen, John Kostyrka, Bob Benoit and Brad Ashe will return next year. The five bowlers who competed averaged 178 points per game for the six-game series—about the same as their season average—and beat all the other North Shore teams. Barry Goldberg compiled the team's high marks of 191 in the tourney. During the regular season, the Generals bowled to a 6—7—1 record in their North Shore League. Mark Brenner, a mainstay of the team, was the only man with previous varsity experience. The other four were in their first year of varsity competition, but bowled like veterans. The coach and the team looked forward to improving upon last year's 7—7 record, and their finish in the middle of the league standings. Three of last year's six starters, Steve Dudley, Bill Fosdick, and Bob Vincel, played varsity ball again this spring. Though without the services of Brian Benz, second in the 1964 State finals, the Generals did well in their league, one of the toughest in the county. A new scoring system, combining characteristics of both match and medal play, was instituted this year. In addi- tion, six players instead of five, partic- ipated in each match. Despite stiff competition from Plain- view, Plainedge, Farmingdale, and Hicks- ville. Coach Kenneth Jahelka and the team worked hard to better last season's second place finish in the league.
