GIRLS ATHLETICS The athletxc season opened w1th a bang and the Gem I-Ilgh Glrls were clamor Ing around xn the dressxng room and everyone was trylng to talk at once We began by playmg volleyball Our flrst volleyball game was wlth Menlo We lost but we lost as good sports We won the next game It was wlth Selden It was after the Selden game that we competed wuth Levant and won The game wlth Grlnnell dld not come out as well and we were agam good sports ln the loslng bracket Cur next game was wlth Rexford whlch we won A tournament was held at Menlo and we came out fourth 1f I remember correctly and there was no trophy for that place After the volleyball season lt was tlme for basketball Our fxrst game of the season was wlth Rexford and we won' We then played Menlo and they defeated us We won from Levant ln our next game We played Menlo agam and agam they defeated us We have played Edson and beaten them twxce The tables turned the other way when we played Clayton twlce We have one more game wlth Levant and are rn great hopes that we wxll wm Beery for hls patlence ln tralnlng us and for helpxng us play good basketball all the way through BOYS ATHLETICS Twelve seems to be the lucky number for the G C I-I S boys athletxc depart ment Volleyball was the flrst sport of the season We played Menlo Rexford Selden and Levant be1ng v1ctor1ous over all but Menlo In October we went to the Tr1 County Tournament at Menlo brmgmg home the second place trophy In basketball we have won one-thxrd of our games We were defeated in the Tournament held january 21 ZZ 23 at Rexford Menlo forfeited thelr game us we lost to Herndon and Grlnnell to place 4th Now we are Wdltlng for the ellmmatlon tournament to be held March 1 Z 3 at Rexford Coach Beery says It looks llke an early baseball season Last but not least the purpose of volleyball basketball and baseball 15 to create a love for sports and good sportsmanshlp Z9 I On behalf of the girls in the Gem Girls Athletic Class I wish to thank Mr. 1 . . . . GRADE AT HLET ICS The grades started out the season of athletlcs by playmg volleyball The gxrls won two and lost two games and the boys lost two and won two games also We had a reasonably successful basketball season The Mldgets won one and lost two games The f1rst team won seven and lost f1V6 games The Mldgets scored a total of 37 polnts to thelr opponents 4-8 The Unllmlted team scored a total of Z4-Z pomts to thexr opponents scormg 222 Some of the boys played on both the Mldgets and Unllmlted Selden ln a grade tournament ln which we took thlrd place trophy Rexford took flr t and Selden took second Edson won the consolatlon bracket The proceeds were enough to pay for the new warmup Jackets we got thls year For our sprmg aCtlV1t1CS we shall probably play some softball hardball and touch football We have enjoyed havlng Mr Dean johnson for our coach He worked us hard but we all proflted from It 30 On February 12, 1949, we entertained Rexford, Levant, Edson, Dresden, and
