Maestro the musxcal bmgo game IS a favormte of all and affords fun wxth the study of musxc Other favorltes are Muslcal Spellmg Matches and Baseball Our tonette orchestra gets bxgger and better each year After each chxld has a falr understandmg of notes he starts learnmg to play the tonette to prepare hlmself for the playmg of a real mstrument Th1s year we started the tonettes ln the thxrd grade The flfth and slxth graders w11l make up the orchestra for the Negro Mmstrel ln the sprlng When you hear them xt IS certain you ll agree that they are deflmtely ready for thelr mstruments Grades one two and three have some new rhythm band Instruments to play ln the rhythm band thxs year We have been studymg the lwes of muslcal composers and for a good revxew play the games Authors and Composers In our 11StCI'11I'lg programs we have enjoyed vlsltmg orchestravllle wlth Rusty and also our study of the Grand Canyon Suxte The seventh and emghth grades helped the h1gh school m thelr operetta by playlng the parts of I-lungarlans They are now worklng on the Negro Mlnstrel to be gmven thls sprxng Sometimes thls group feel they are ummportant but the hxgh school couldn t have had the1r programs wxthout them and the grades CLASSES ENGLISH The fxrst semester Enghsh lasses had to sweat out a workbook of grammar and spelling Spellmg IS a weakness for some of us and one too embarrassmg to be laughed off In our llterature classes the Freshmen have read short stones frorr- The Tragedy of jullus Caesar The Sophomores memorxzed Mark Antony s Frlends Romans Countrymen wh1le the jumors memorxzed selectlons from The Raven and Thanatops1s Stones of the West detectlve tales and cornedxes are preferred by most of the students From the last selectxons of The Teen Age Book Club all but one person chose My joke Book From all mdlcatxons Darrell Leh w11l haxe some compet1t1on from now t1ll school IS out BIOLOGY The flrst hour every day found four Sophomore gxrls and eight jumors four boys and four glrls engaged m a struggle for exzstence m the Sclence room But every lwlng thmg responds to Its envlronment and we have completed fue of the ezght umts from our text Z3 wouldn't want to have one without them, so who could fill a bigger bill? HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC Thls year all eleven hzgh school gzrls and exght hlgh school boys make up the hlgh school muslc department In addztlon to thls Al Chuck and Wayne have been playzng the1r guxtars Durlng the flrst semester we worked mostly on the gypsy operetta Chomta whlch was presented by both boys and gxrls muslc wnth the did of part Of the grade school Due to the wmter s flrst bhzzard December 8 When lt was pre sented however we felt our efforts had been well worth whlle It was hlghly praxsed by members of thzs commumty and others Peggy Lanmng played the part of Chomta Wayne Laurltsen was her true love Shurl Decker her father and the gypsles kmg Estelle Treat her old nurse and duenna Kenneth Poland the Baron Stanescu Ilene Poland the Baroness Stanescu Duane Saddler thezr son and jerry Knudson was a servant Emll There were fme solos choruses and dancmg glrls The speech class deslgned the sets and Mr Beery d1rected the dlalogue The costumes were partlcularly beautlful and colorful The success of thxs operetta was based on everyone domg h1s part whlch however small contrxbuted to the fmal effect Now we are enthuslastzcally workxng on a Negro Mxnstrel whxch we wlll present thls sprlng with axd of the seventh and elghth grades Peggy Lanmng Ilene Poland and Estelle Treat comprxse the glrls tr1o wlth Joyce Laurxtsen slngmg wxth them th1s last semester makzng a quartet These groups wlll furnlsh numbers for our sprmg actlvxtles and at the Baccalaureate and Commencement exerc1ses Usually thls year we have had our music classes dxvlded up for special practlces except for fmal preparatlon for the ooeretta Mrs McArthur has a way of extracting the best work of her students and anyone ln her music classes wlll heartxly agree that she IS a really swell musxc teacher GRADE MUSIC The grade rnuslc department has been falthfully workmg toward Improve ment In smgmg playmg and muszc apprecmatzon The story of Why the Chxmes Rang was presented at Christmas txme The junior Choir Llttle Boys Choxr and the Angel Cholr sang the story as was read by jerry Knudson and pantomxmed by the cast chosen from the grades Ward Munkres and Earl Treat were very effectwe as Pedro and Little Brother The speech class made the stage settxng and Mr McArthur made the staxned glass plcture wmdow The combination of th1s beautiful settlng the good smg mg fme readmg and excellent axccompamment by Estelle Treat caused the true sp1r1t of Chrxstmas to be felt by each chnld and successfully portrayed to a large audlence The study of notes IS started ln the flrst arade by learmng the notes that came to school wlth dlrty faces and those that come to school wlth clean faces The game of Maestro 1s played through the grades to learn kmds of notes names of bass clef and treble clef notes and time values 2.2. . 1 1 1 1 .- . on - I . 1 . 1 . . - n I 1 u n a 1 0 1 1 0 0 . We have examlned most of the speclmen from the lab case and others whlch class members have brought to school Among these was a scarlet kmg snake whlchjerry Knudson captured from a sand plt It llved for three days and now rests among other pxckled reptxles m our cabmet Incldentally on the day Shurl Decker brought a plg s kldney to school we had meatloaf for dmner We know the cooks dxd not rustle up the kldney because Beverley Mentllck was ln s hool the followmg afternoon She could hardly stay lil the classroom wlth the organ whlle xt was rare SOCIAL SCIENCE The Soclal Sclence department of Gem H1gh School meets the state requlre ments for graduatlon Cltlzenshlp teaches the prlvlleges and obllgatlons of an Amerxcan Cltlzen The class made a detalled study of the A F of L the C I O and other labor unlons Great stress was lald on the fact that unless each cltlzen exercxsed hxs rxghts he was llable to forfelt them Great emphasxs has been la1d on a good character and personahty when seekmg a means of llvelxhood after completxng the high school tralnlng The Amerlcan Hlstory class has been trymg to mterpret the present and to make predlctlons for the future by makmg a study of our ancestors who have glven thelr hves m war and peace to make our LATIN The Latm department has secured a thorough foundatlon ln Latin grammar and rhetorlc Sxnce the Enghsh grammar IS based almost entxrely on Latm grammar thxs knowledge xs mvaluable to them Many of our legal and medlcal terms have come from Latm The class has enjoyed translatmg these saymgs The class has enjoyed readxng stones about the Roman school also the Forum where the laws were made and publlc meetings were held The Romans have made extenslve contrlbutzons to c1v1l1.zat1on They had paved roads systems of 1rr1gat1on courts long before other natlons became advanced ln c1v1l1zat1on The Latin class was large th1s year and took a constructlve mterest xn 1tS work COMMERCE Ilene Poland 15 the only student m Typing II Hence she has often become general office gxrl as well as worklng out her budgets Her latest project has been typmg the dummy copy of Gem s Gems The exght m Typing I have discovered they have to learn somethlng of spell mg hyphenatzon letter forms and English as well as machme mampulatlon By the end of the fourth sxx weeks all regularly gross over 4-0 words jerry has attamed the hxghest net of 50 words per mmute on a ten mlnute test In Busmess Arlthmetlc the Semors and Sophomores have boned up on the four fundamentals and percentages as well as learmng many short cuts business forms and general business practlces Z4 . . . .
