HISTORY OF THE 1949 Sl-INIORS Back 1n the fall of 1937 elght bright llttle eager faces appeared ln the prlmary room of the Gem Consolldated Grade School to launch out on a great voyage They were Anna Mae Sears joan Welshaar Ilene Poland Wayne I..aur1tsen Kenneth Munkres Bernard Haremza Alan Smxth and Clarence HBVICB The flrst two years of our voyage on our ship Success we had Francis Deckert as our Captam After the fxrst year Wayne Laurltsen transferred to Jom the Tully crew from Rawllns County Durlng our third year at sea we had Marjory Erwln for our Captaxn and a new crew member Merle Pavhcek who was transferred from another shlp The fourth year our Captam was Myldred Hays Myrtle Oyer Jolned us from the Ness Clty shxp Merle was transferred to another shlp and we rescued George Dresher who was strugglmg ln the water Esther Pryor was our Captam the fxfth year at sea wxth the same Happy go Luckies The Happy go Luckles set sa1l w1th Eula Pryor as Captaln the s1xth year Through the seventh and ezghth years Twxla Saddler was our Captam Durmg the seventh year Anna Mae Sears was transferred to Oklahoma At the end of the year Bernard Haremza and George Dresher fell overboard Wayne Laurztsen Joined us again ln the elghth year Durmg the year Myrtle Oyer was transferred to Greensburgh shxp and Nebert Spencer and jamce Buford were transferred to Stlll eager for more knowledge Wayne Laurxtsen Bob Havlce Clarence Havxce Alan Smith jamce Buford Kenneth Munkres and Ilene Poland went on together 1nto our Freshmen year with our Captaln Blance Lzvmgston joan Welshaar was trans ferred to St Mary s Academy Nebert Spencer was shanghaled During the year Alan Smlth was transferred to Brewster Our Sophomore and junxor years were with Irene Thornburg as Captam Durmg the Sophomore year janzce Buford was transferred to Levant leavlng only One Rose Among the Thorns Ilene Poland During our junior year we docked and were hosts to the Gem Seniors at the junlor Senior Banquet We used Moon I..1ght and Roses as the theme of the Banquet We Wayne Laurltsen Bob Havxce Clarence Havlce Kenneth Munkres and Ilene Poland boarded our old shlp Success our Semor year wzth Robert Beery as Captam On May 19 194-9 our good ship w1l1 make 1ts fmal moorlng at Gem Hlgh School Here the crew will be glven lts papers and dxscharged so each may Jom a shlp of his own choosmg to contmue into the voyage of l1fe 8 ' O ' I 5 l D ' Y I I I 9 I I tl 90 H . . . . . PROPI-IECY One evemng m the sprlng of 59 I was readmg my dally copy of the Los Angeles Txmes when I came across an artlcle about Admxral Bob Havlce s darmg explomts ln the South Pacxflc and I began wondermg what my other class mates were domg for a llvxng Next mornmg I packed my bags went down to my deluxe auto and helicopter garage gave my manager a few last mmute m structlons Jumped mto my Jetmobxle and headed for our old campmg grounds around Gem In Salt Lake C1ty I stopped for my dally atomxc energy food and I overheard two college students talkmg about thelr classes under a teacher by the name of Mxss Poland After mquxrmg I learned that lt IS none other than Ilene They lnformed me that she was a excellent teacher havmg studxed under great masters of muslc xn Europe I was well pleased to hear th1s so I drove out to the umverslty to see her and found all that educatlon had left her sweet d1spos1t1on unchanged I learned from her that Clarence Havlce had a busmess ln Denver so say1ng farewell I made a speedy trlp and arrlved there before mght Drwmg down Broadway I spzed a large neon slgn blmklng off and on and readlng I-IAVICE HOTEL BFST PLACE IN TOWN Upon enterlng dxgmfxed man wzth a luxurxous beard came over to me and sald ln a famllxar behmd the beard I recognized Clarence After exchangmg greetmgs we VlSlt ed for a whlle then drove out to h1s home ln the suburbs where I met hxs wlfe and family That evemng he showed me a letter he had rece1ved from h1s brother Bob It told of h1s marrlage to a beautlful 1sland ma1den hls mansion ln Cuba and of hzs three black eyed trlplets Next mormng I bade farewell and sped off toward Colby havmg been told by Clarence that I would fmd Wayne Laurltsen around there On commg mto Colby I xmmedxately became snarled ln a trafflc Jam Next to my car was a pickup truck w1th the words LAURITSEN FARMS INC painted on the sldes I spoke with the drlver and he told me that Wayne would probably be found at his headquarters north of Rexford Drxvmg up the paved road to hls farm I saw a large herd of purebred cattle ln the corral and golden wavxng wheat as far as I could see so I surm1sed that he was dolng falrly well for h1mself Once there after much back slappmg and hand shaking we talked about old tlmes and looked over the farm Later as I was about to depart for home two llttle golden halred twlns came runnmg up and said Daddy when IS mommy coming home? Wayne explamed that h1s w1fe was down to the cxty for the week end to do some shoppnng Blddmg goodbye and regrettmg that I was unable to see her as my tunes was runmng short I sped off mto the sun set towards my own home and farruly 10 ' : , .. , ' , 'a voice, Welcome to our hotel.
